Just a note, the demo will likely go up sometime tonight (or tomorrow night if tonight counts as now for you... it's like 12:13am here atm). _________________

Pretty excited about this. Seems about as close to a flight sim as we've seen in a long while- for some reason there have been an absolute dearth of them lately. _________________

I'll give this a go; I missed out on Ace Combat 6 because the franchise jumped ship, so I've been waiting for a good replacement to come along.
I'm just hoping it won't be too simulation-y. My favourite parts of Ace Combat were when you had to fly a large jet very fast through some tunnels or caves or other assorted non-jet-friendly locales. Maybe I was acting out my deep seated Death Star Trench Run dreams, I don't know, but I always loved those parts. I'm hoping HAWX won't just be 20 dogfights.
Also, every time I glance at the name of this game my mind thinks it sees Tony Hawk's. _________________

Not played a fun flight sim in quite a while (Flight Sim X doesn't count). Hopefully this is good, the demo sounds quite meaty! _________________

Just played it. I quite enjoyed it, except for the "Assistance off" mode, which has nothing to do with assisting, it just makes you play from a camera 500m away and try to maneuver your plane on really odd camera angles.
I spent 5 minutes shooting down drones that I could have shot down in one had I been in the HUD view.
Graphics though are great, and gameplay is quite similar to Ace Combat, in that you unlock new aircraft and weaponry, and the whole mechanic of it. Though in HAWX you rank up based on XP, which I welcome.
I'll have to play through a couple more times, but I'm quite happy with it, so long as you're not forced into using the distant third person view outside of the tutorials.
I'll be keeping an eye on this one... _________________

yep

Heh, from what I've read about this, if you go into options and change the control mode to "Expert" rather than normal, then assistance off is the mode that allows you to do barrel rolls (effectively, control yaw) and tight maneuvers, and is used when dogfighting when chasing down an acrobatic enemy.
Hope that's right. So essentially, you'll probably have to get used to it...
Stayed up last night waiting for this to come to PSN, really bummed that it won't show till tonight! _________________

Yep id have to agree with what A13x said. The assist off mode is absolute balls. Its like they attempted to do something new and different to Ace Combat, but I really dont like it. Found it took a lot longer to kill things. I guess it might take some getting used to, but I find it pointless. Much prefer the traditional view which I stuck to in the second mission.
The gate things when you evade missiles or intercept enemies is an interesting idea, other than that its pretty much identical to Ace Combat, which isnt a bad thing. _________________ XBL/PSN/Steam: BenC82

Yeah, I was playing with expert controls, though the camera angle is just so impractical. I mean it's fine that it can lock on to the enemy plane to give an indication on where you need to turn, but you lack the precision of the first person view for aiming directly at the target.
Making small adjustments to your yaw and pitch to centre your cannon on a foe in this view is made harder as it almost eliminates an axis from view.
With the expert control scheme and "assistance" on, i.e. first person hud view, I found I could do whatever it was I wanted, as far as manoeuvres were concerned, and I wouldn't need to squint to see the plane and whether it's inverted or the right way up to make a split second decision to pitch down or up to follow my target.
The third person view is a fixed non-rolling camera, so you really have to pay attention to not only the enemy aircraft, and the turns it's making, but you need to view your own aircraft in much the same way, and constantly monitor the angle it is on to be able to decide if you suddenly have to push up, or if you need to push down instead to follow the enemy. From the first person viewpoint, this is immediately obvious, as it remains constant regardless of how the plane has rolled comparatively to the world around it. _________________

So can you actually play the game with the cockpit view and those 'assistance' hoop things that you're supposed to fly through turned off? In other words, like Ace Combat? _________________

You can yeah.
You double tap a trigger to disengage assistance, or press X or square to turn the guidance hoops on or off when in first person, which will pretty much mean you're playing Ace Combat with XP and levelling. _________________

Ahh, that's great to hear.
Now I really can't wait for that PSN Hawx release tonight. The graphics look amazing, itching to see how it performs on a 60" plasma at fullhd.
I know x360 owners have had ace combat to play with, but us ps3 owners have had nothing like this at all, so a lot rests on this delivering! _________________

I would think it depends on if you have a joystick or not for your PC. _________________ XBL/PSN/Steam: BenC82

Just a heads up to PS3 owners - the demo has been delayed until the 26th of February due to a “late discovery of an unexpected issue.” _________________

NO!!!!
Edit: Initiation explosion of rage over. Rant initiated.
Ohhh man, I had been waiting for ages to play Hawx, now I'm barely going to have time to squeeze in JB's $69 pre-order if I'm happy with the demo experience! This totally blows, what could they possibly have missed in QA that the X360 version didn't have to worry about?! _________________

Was really looking forward to this demo but then here's yet another reason for us Ps3 owners to feel frustration, the temptation to buy a 360 is further increased...
And of all dates the 26th???? There's probably another 'little' title that'll be being played on Ps3's around the world on that date!!!! _________________

Well after completing the available missions on the demo, I can clearly say that I'm pretty disappointed and will most likely cancel my pre-order.
The deal breaker has to be that retarded Auto Assist crap that you have to switch off to pull off high speed maneuvers. I have no idea why the game opted to chose that camera while having auto assist off. It not only makes controlling the aircraft far harder than what it has to be when in the mode but most importantly, you fly ******* blind for most of the time, in that it's hard to find your locked enemy on screen! You don't even use the radar or the rotatable camera for assistance which is something I use to perfection on Ace Combat. To make matters worst, you really struggle to take out enemies or evade missiles without going in this mode. It really destroys the gameplay in my books It would be great if the camera remained the same unless you manually change it when on auto assist off. I really don't see why it's necessary to switch camera when you can clearly use the brake drift or High G turns while on the normal camera, that way you still have the rader and the right joystick to move the camera to see your enemies.
Other than that a lot of things have been implemented pretty well. I really do love the inclusion of flares which would come in very handy against ground enemies firing heaps of SAM's. The other thing that I thought was alright was E.R.S. But I felt that it added too much assistance in the game. There should only be minimal or no reliance on that sort of assistance as it should be up to you to find what the best way to avoid missiles, lock on to enemies and destroy ground targets surrounded by buildings. Still a nifty feature though. Graphically the game looks awesome especially Rio itself.
It's a good Arial combat game but that **** camera in the no assist mode really does kill it for me. I'll stick to Ace Combat for my top gun fix until something better comes out. _________________
