I am SO tired of handhelds getting updated every 18 months or so..

I got a PSP on launch and then decided to update to the PSP-2000 as well..

Now the PSP-3000 is just out and we're hearing news of the PSP2..

You could count the number of awesome games on the horizon for the PSP1 with 1 hand, and now with the sucessor in the pipeline I'd be surprised if any decent games come out for it past June this year..

Considering the route that Sony went with the PSP (console experience in your pocket), it will be hilarious if they sell out to the casual market with all this trendy touch screen nonsense.

p.s. I actually really like the PSP - although I can't actually remember the last time I turned mine on...

if you ask nicely next time you're in an EB store (or if you're friendly with staff) ask to have a quick look at the PSP "Coming Soon" screen... there's roughly a dozen games on it, most of which don't even have dates/prices, whereas if you look at the DS/360/PS3 pages, there's almost a page on each being released in the next two months.

PSP2? LOL, more like DS...P2 LOL LOLZ ZOZL!!!11amarkofexclamation1!1!!!fluffybunnyrabbit!!!111!11!

Multi-touch sounds like a really good idea, and could make for some really interesting gameplay mechanics. All the PSP needs is some great games on the horizon and it'll be set.

Not surprising one bit.

Sony stole the motion-sensing controller idea and now they're gonna steal the touch screen idea.

Good luck Sony. Good luck.

for some reason, i see the PSPtouch being more like the way the iTouch and iPhone work than how the DS works. don't really know why, except that the PSP's (hell, all of Sony's) menu system seems ideal to the "cover flow" style.

i'm surprised there's no rumour of it having accelerometers like the iTouch/iPhone too, just to complete the "rip off".

The most recent variant is the PSP-3000, which is smaller than before and comes with a built-in microphone and.

And... Skype Support?

I'm not big with touch screen support. On the DS, I avoid using it when I can and I mostly play games that doesn't need it (like many rpg titles)

Yeah, just like the PS3 controller works (?) differently to the Wiimote. Doesn't mean they're not biters.

This makes me giggle - I remember getting into some long winded arguments about how Sony, unlike Nintendo and Microsoft, at least didn't go around re-releasing hardware with slight revisions and flooding the market with different SKUs. Ho ho ho!

Not that this is anything other than (decently grounded) speculation at this point. But still...

I'm not actually adverse to the idea (for once) - I'm sure that if it were to happen there would be a whole boatload of 'touch screen shovelware' (See: about 30% of overall DS titles...) gracing it, but there would also be (as always) some real gems amidst the rough. The bit that actually tickles my fancy though? What the homebrew croawd will get up to with that kind of hardware behind a touchscreen. I fully expect great things (or at least, Crayon Physics ULTRA Deluxe... icon_wink.gif).

As long as it still has tactile controls and is actually ergonomic this time around (my launch PSP gave me horrendous hand cramps, and I can imagine the Slim and Lite being worse), I'd consider buying it.

Well, actually, I wouldn't, since I don't really travel much anymore so I don't require a portable gaming device. It's more like if Sony were smart they'd do these things.

Multi-touch? On a PSP sized screen?

Not interested, it'll only lead to gimick games and at best maybe 2 or 3 games will get it right icon_sad.gif

I think Sony need to sort their software out before they focus on hardware. The PSP library held such promise and then the bottom fell out of it. Looking at the release list for the platform reminds me of when the Xbox was in it's dying days..

Sony may have well and truly given up on this iterition of the Playstation Portable if it's current library is anything to go by. I suppose they're too busy working on this alleged new handheld to now pay the current one any due mind..

Wasn't the Skype support in a firmware update, not exclusive to the 3000 models?

I think Sony have realised that traditional gaming on the move doesn't really work. The DS and iPhone apps are incredible successfull because they are easy, fast and suitable for mobile gaming. Most success games on the DS that use the touch screen aren't really games.

But I can't help but feel knowing Sony that this, if true, will be an inferior product. They tend to have knack of balls up everything. I would hate to try and bring out a product to rival the iPhone/iTouch. The DS is different because it has Pokemon. Pokemon will sell **** on toast.

Correct. The 3000 made it easier to use Skype though with the in built microphone.

The problem is gaming has changed. Tradition gaming on the move was fine until the DS came out, and it changed into a less serious style of game play. (I'm looking at you too Wii)

I'm hoping for some Blutooth support so I can go ahead and link my headset with the PSP2 making it easier to use Skype when in voice only.

Touch screen is an obvious upgrade that Sony hasn't announced they will be using, hopefully they keep the buttons/dpad and don't opt for the iphone method where they have them on screen.

Personally, I don't want Sony to use a touch screen on the PSP2. If they do go for the touch screen, I would hope that they make the option of using the touch screen or the buttons and D-Pad/Analog on games. I'm hoping for Bluetooth, a sliding screen (like on a phone) and an inbuilt hard-drive. Whether that happens or not, different story.

Was sad to see the PSPhone didn't go through. Thought that was a good idea myself.

Wow, not only did Sony take the time to deny an IGN rumor about the PSP2, but the company took the opportunity to flat out insult the site. IGN recently cited "several credible sources" in a report on Sony's next handheld, allegedly featuring a touch screen, Bluetooth support, hard drive and GPS. MCV then spoke to Sony about the rumor -- that's when the sparks flew.

"Clearly, being a quiet time of year, many, what we thought to be credible websites, are making up stories about PSP2, and how it allows you to teleport across the globe, travel through time, and will be powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses," Sony explained. "Hopefully, you can sense a mild tone of sarcasm, which should hopefully indicate how 'on the money' IGN are. Needless to say, we don't comment on rumour or speculation, but this is nonsense."

We don't know who to feel embarrassed for right now, but it's certainly going to be awkward if IGN is right.

Now that Apple has obtained patent/s for multi-touch touch pads/gestures, rumours are flying that that PSP2 may be at risk. Even though PSP2 hasn't even been confirmed?

I know no one who bought an iPhone or an iPod touch for the games, they bought em to be phones and mp3 players first and formost.

The number of people I see playing games on their iPhone/iTouch on public transport is justication enough for me.
