Don't worry, maybe Atari will pick up the distribution slack.

Hopefully, as I'll be rather unhappy if I don't get to play RE5. _________________

A couple of things spring to mind.
1 - People claiming that Australian game prices are a rip off. If they genuinely were a rip off, it doesn't sound like Red Ant were taking an unfair cut.
2 - More people importing games would have this effect, killing local companies.
3 - I certainly wouldn't be worried about those developers finding Australian distributors, though, possibly with a delay for upcoming releases.

I thought Atari did Konami releases here in Australia?
Sad news though that they are closing, another casualty of the credit crunch _________________ RIP Buddha 19/10/1952 - 03/01/2004

This sux hard but I was contemplating cutting back on the SFIV special edition cuz I really dont need a diorama of Ryu Vs Crimson Viper....I just need the dvd/blu-ray extras. If SFIV is delayed then i'll just import it cuz I was getting the Ps3 version anyways.
I wouldn't worry about Resident Evil 5, that's almost 2 months away and i'm sure Capcom will have something sorted out by then. If not then atleast we got a little bit of a heads up if we need to import. _________________

They did up until the beginning of this year. _________________

If you can't offer a competing price in a global market you'll fail.

The local gaming industry just posted record profits surpassing Australian movies and DVD sales.
But yeah, if they can't offer me a competitive price I'm not going to buy a product off them just cause they're local. _________________

Could you provide some more detail on that? It's not something I've ever seen particularly specific information about.

Agreed. I hate the local vs overseas debate, especially in terms of food produce. Overseas markets tend to produce more exotic and cheap things. _________________

That's referring to local sales, not local industry (development, publishing, etc). Though you'd expect it to reflect positively on local distributors at least. So big local sales should mean big business for the likes of Red Ant (distribution is their main game isn't it?)

And who publishes the games for local sale? Local publishers?
Would this actually effect games they've allready published? Say Fallout 3? When that goes out of stock would they be able to get anymore or would they have to wait for a new publisher? And if so does that mean we might see it at a little bit less ridiculous price? _________________

I think for the most part, games sold in Australia are published by International / foreign publishers. Fallout 3 for example is published by Bethesda Softworks, a division of ZeniMax Europe. By the bar-code it says "Made in the EU". Red Ant are the Australian distributors. I'm pretty sure you can look at the chain of command as Developer > Publisher > Distributor > Retailer. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong at any part of this or about the specifics of Fallout 3 or Red Ant.
So yeah, I think if Red Ant went under, retailers could run out of stock of Fallout 3 (and others) since a distributor isn't in place.
I'm curious what you mean by "ridiculous price" though. Are you just comparing foreign prices using currency exchange? Because that's not a very good comparison.
