Basically I want to ask does anyone listen to music while playing games , what music do you listen to and does it make you a better player.
Just asking cause when I play CoD4 online with music I play a lot better. Does this happen to anyone else?

I don't know if i play better or not, but if no-one is mic chatting on the server, i'll have music playing whilst i play TF2.
Not while i play single player games though, it breaks the immersion. _________________

Single Player... never (I aactually turn off the music in any game), well not never, games like Saints Row or Skate, i.e Open World/sports games, I will have music playing because it's what I'd be doing in that situation.
Online I have music cranking because I like music.

yeah it defiantly depends on the game. after 8 hours of banjos music i had my controller cord around my neck and i was dangling from my light fitting. a game like mass effect i would kick you in the face for interrupting its amazing sound track.

Depends on what game, storyline driven games I'll usualy listen to the ingame music because it's written to suit the story etc.
Other games, DRAGONFORCE BABY!
I could not imagine playing Burnout without custom soundtracks. _________________

I almost never put music on because it ruins it basically. Total loss of immersion. And when you do put music on it's a crazy scramble to shut it off when a cutscene comes on. The music in games is made to be listened to whilst playing that particular game. Can you imagine playing portal while listening to different music? You'd lose the whole experience.
I'm not saying it's bad per se but I'd really rather just enjoy the game's audio. _________________

Custom soundtracks on x-box fix that problem _________________

Playing CS with some sort of metal playing is always good, despite the fact it hinders my ability to hear footsteps etc.
I don't usually listen to music though, unless it's from the game itself. Speaking of which, really enjoying the radio on Saints Row 2. _________________

Like everyones else, I rarely listen to my own music in single-player games. Nothing breaks immersion more. If I'm playing a tense survival horror game, I want the chilling soundtrack, not Mmm-bop blaring from my speakers. If I'm playing a game set in medieval times for instance, I want the orchestral soundtrack, not even the best heavy rock song would change my mind. The few games that I do use my own music are racing, skating, and modern open world games, as listening to your own music doesn't seem out of place.
As for whether it helps me, listening to my own music, it certainly does in Wipeout HD. In Zone mode, you need to really concentrate, and I find the games default soundtrack gets you too tense for the almost zen like state you need to win. With my own music it's easier to concentrate and be a little calmer when you all of a sudden lose control and smash into walls 3 times and lose a quarter of your health. _________________

See, I hate the chilling soundtracks as well. I remove ALL music from atmospheric titles as it detracts from my immersion.

If im playing say cod4 it'll most likely be Bullet For My Valentine or Billy Talent, fast paced stuff. Makes you go in and not camp. But games like, fallout or story mode, never. It ruins the whole experience imo. _________________

Only game I've ever had a custom soundtrack for was Test Drive Unlimited. Most of my other games have either had good sountracks (Ridge Racer, Outrun, GTA series), fitting soundtracks (Total War series, World in Conflict) or not required one that I haven't bothered. Burnout Paradise might get a custom soundtrack soon since I'm starting to tire of the standard songs. _________________ My Photos

I will play a game through once with just the in game music. I think all games should be played like this the first time. its like watching a movie, would you watch it the first time while reading a book?? Then after that, i will listen to mainly metal. but it would depend on the game. FPS = Slipknot, Metallica, Kiss, KSE, Evanescence, Disturbed, Cycoptic, COB etc. Everything else is really mood based for me. I play games to cheer me up when im down, so i may be playing FEAR while listening to the Believe album while blasting everything that moves . Or, just crank up VCPR and listen to that endlessly while playing an RPG... somehow seems fitting
