i like the achievement aspect of it, i don't like the gamerscore aspect.

i also prefer the achievements that are a little lateral*, rather than the ones you unlock through normal play, or ones where you have to collect 100s of items, or kill thousands of enemies. those just seem cheap. (a "I completed the single player" achievement is cool, but the level 1, level 2, level 3, etc just seem a little meh.

*Orange Box's Gnome Achievement. COD4's save the farmer. these sort.

@ The Genius

While I don't question your approach to gaming, for me its not about becoming a celebrity. Or being known for having x amount of Trophies. Not at all.
Quote:

If I tried going 1000/1000 score or platinum trophies I know I wouldnt enjoy the game and waste so much time.

For me its about value and motivation. I try to get 100% completion on any game that I own - because otherwise I feel like I wasted my money. Last game being Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. But the difference between me and a 'Trophy Addict' is that I don't want to 100% complete every game that exists. Just the ones I already own, and already had an interest in.

I think the thing that separates a Trophy Whore from someone that ignores Trophy systems is that a Whore wants to get the most out of each individual encounter. At least that's how it works out for me.

So while I do want to get my Platinum Trophy in LBP, I'm not buying FarCry2, BioShock, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space (etc.) in order to get value as a gamer - I'm getting it all (albeit quite slowly) from LBP. Which makes me happy.

EDIT: turns out I am buying BioShock icon_rolleyes.gif

I voted yes and would say I am addicted, but only because I find it extremely fun and satisfying to see that ding pop up. I don't have a ridiculously high score, but hitting a high % for a game always gives me a good feeling and often can be directly linked to how much I got out of a game. It doesn't happen for every game but when I love a game enough getting the achievements can add a lot more replay value. I'm not one for repeating the game over and over again for no 'reason' because I can find it a bit tiresome, however with that goal in mind it can really make it enjoyable again.

I wouldnt say i'm an addict, but I definately like them and they certainly extend the game's life for me. But i dont buy games or go nuts just to find trophies or achievements... just if they show up, or I can achieve them easily, or if I really, really like a game (eg. Uncharted)

I voted Yes.

I generally won't play a crappy game just for the easy 1000GS, but if it is a game i enjoy playing I'll do what i can to make it to the 1000GS.

Again, i agree with every one else, the Achievement's just give the games a little bit extra... It would be great if the 360 gods to end up unlocking Avatar thingys with achievements, but i don't think it is realll necessary.

that's something else that annoys me about the numerical system. i just don't see the point in tracking down a game like Avatar for a quick 1000GS. personally i'd rather have points that were actually an achievement to get.

whatever floats your boat i guess.

I like achievements but totally hate the concept of a gamerscore.

It's the biggest addition to nerd ego since the word 'newb' was first shouted through the console of Counter Strike.

Like seriously, renting/buying NBA 2k6 to get 1000 points in 10 mins is just lame. I kinda don't like how the people that farm these kinda games tend to shove their score in alot of folks face.

O well each to their own but i just don't care enough, gaming is about fun - simple! icon_biggrin.gif

I love accumulating achievements in games I enjoy, but not to the detriment of my playing. So collecting x number of items is cool, beating games on hard is awesome fun, even mixing up my playstyle by offering up alternative ways to play the main game is great but things that are just too frustrating to accomplish or annoying, I won't bother with. I also don't play online heaps, so I'm not big on multiplayer achievements.

I would like some sort of tangible reward for my exploits, it'll be interesting to see what role trophies will play into Home as I think the coolest thing would be to own a trophy room that just keeps getting bigger and bigger as you amass more and more rewards. Doubt it'll play out like that though.

Err, whenever I've heard anyone mention Fable or Fable 2 they've always mentioned that you could kick chickens. I'm tempted to go for the rabbit achievement but I fear that it's a cheap trick and the moment I attempt to attack it it'll fly up and decapitate me in a shower of blood and I've yet to come across any kind of holy thrown weapons in the game icon_confused.gif

As for achievement addict, I'm not one. If I like the game I'll give a few of the difficult ones to go, but the uncompleted ones will nag at me because I want to have things finished at 100%.

I rarely if ever notice achievements at all. Only game where they've matter to any extent was Team Fortress 2 since they were tied to unlocks.

I like the achievements, not sure if I'm an addict but I think they add a little something extra to a game you already enjoy.

Sometimes games don't give you a real sense of achievement by themselves so having the achievements there is a good thing, just to have it written down and recorded that I've done a certain thing.

However some of them are just stupid and serve no real purpose other than adding 'cool' points to your profile. The ones I like are for defeating levels on higher difficulties or making the effort to collect certain bonus items and so forth. Also games like guitar hero where you get points for having a big note streak or scoring a lot of points on a single song.

I like some of the stupid ones too, like Guitar Hero III's failing a certain song 10 times in a row or playing for a total of 24hrs in Zuma

I don't tend to look through the list though, simply because I like to see what I can achieve without knowing them in advance.

I'm not an achievement addict – far from it in fact.

Generally I just play a game and have a quick look at the achievement requirements and pick and choose ones that I can easily knock out while playing the game naturally.

I don't necessarily like to re-do a level just to find certain things or do certain actions because I like my game playing experience to be as fluid as possible. However on slow nights when I'm just sitting around, I turn on the PS3 and play whatever game disc is inside to knock off a few achievements and unlocks in order to kill time, plus yeah I like the sense of accomplishment you get after doing so.

I put myself down for yes. I don't usually bother getting the full 1000 (in fact I've only ever done so in one game) but I do go out of my way to get as many as I can without ridiculous amounts of time commitment or multiple play-throughs. I think they are an amazing idea. Simple, yet they have motivated me to get a lot more out of games I would have otherwise simply plowed through and put aside.

Nope. Never liked them. I hear all my 360 friends how they brag over their gamerscore, it seems just like a gimmick to me.

And if i wasted all of my time playing a game just for the achievement i'll really be thinking "what am i achieving"?

Well pretty little i suppose. I play games just for pure fun and a break, and im not so competitive since everyone is better than me

I'd say I'm sort of addicted to achievements and gamerscore. I know my GS isn't as high as a lot of ppl out there, but personally I keep wanting to unlock achievements just so I can get my gamerscore to the nearest 500, then the nearest 1000, then the next 500/1000 after that. I don't care how I stack up against other people, for me and my OCD it's to get it to the nearest 1000. If it takes me a while to do so, then so be it. I'm not entirely fussed. I just like seeing that GS slowly increase.

I won't go out of my way to play crappy games, but I find that it gives me a good reason to play through my games a lot differently than I normally would the first time.

I generally find them a nice distraction from the main story or component of the game. I often find myself just wanting to play something quickly to achieve a set goal, that can be hard to do with games as you mostly don't know the goal as the story is developing as you play.

What happens if you get exactly on the 500 or 1000? Do you then stop playing games forever in fear of messing up your symmetry?

I seem to go through phases with achievements...sometimes i play a game wouldn't normally, just for the sake of easy achievements (eg: X-Men or Lost Via Domus, though i ended up sort of enjoying both) or i'd play a game i'd have semi-interest in, hate it after i played it, but still finish it for the achievements (like TMNT, King Kong). But most of my completed games i thoroughly enjoyed the whole way through and have no regrets spending time going for all achievements (~100 hours in each PES6 and Oblivion, 20-30 hours in Alone in the Dark and Bully) even if others would consider that a waste of time when i could've been playing a new game during those hours.

But i've kinda realised that the overall gamerscore is really just a "gaming odometer" and i don't get as much satisfaction out of increasing my overall GS anymore. What i'm more interested in now is improving my GS % completion rate, which currently sits at a paltry 46.44% (officially 48.82% now that i've deleted 4 retail games from my card icon_razz.gif). It also bugs me when i scroll through my card/tag and see low scores for lots of games (ie: double digits) and seeing that encourages me to eventually go back and finish the game and/or complete the "achievable" achievements from those games.

I'd be more of an achievement whore for sure if they actually rewarded gamers, either with Avatar items as El Taco suggested, or a redeem-GS- for-MS-points system would be nice...

Nah. Although it does sound kinda obsessive compulsive, big picture wise, I'm not entirely fussed. I'll just move on to trying to get to the next 500 or next 1000. At the end of the day, if I'm not smack-bang on a nice round number, I'm not going to get annoyed. It's only a game I'm playing with myself after all icon_smile.gif.

I know I'm going to be playing games regardless of GS because there's always some new game you want to play which will mess up your GS anyway icon_biggrin.gif.

And on the note of unlockables for avatars as a result of achievements, I'd be down for that. If I could get get a Vault Dweller suit, that'd be great.

You obviously don't play crysis.

Also, achievements like Kill 100 Generic Enemy Aliens are just annoying and i won't farm those, although i will go out of my way to complete other ones.

Like the Little Rocket Man achieve in Episode 2. (Carry a garden gnome through the whole game and put it in the rocket at the end.)

THE WHOLE FRIGGIN GAME. INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING.
It was worth it though, to have a second meaning to Dr. Kleiner saying "we're experiencing a couple of pounds payload anomaly"

PS3 Trophies are great and work well when you operate over a multiple of consoles. But it does seem some devs get a little lazy in their selection and objective requirement.

I wouldnt class myself as one. I will play a game through but I dont specifically go through multiple play throughs to collect everything, I will play through multiple times because I enjoy it. Sure it is nice to hear the little niose when you have been awarded a trophy but I wont play a dull and boring game just to increase my score. Story & gameplay are always first on my list.

I am actually quite surprised Blink/Commentator hasnt responded in this thread yet......
