That's why I ditched my media server for a more permanent solution. It's served me well over the years, but the reduced fidelity and random lag issues caused by the wireless connection left me wanting more. You're going to need a beefy CPU if you want a smooth ride over a wireless link, at least that's what I've been lead to believe. _________________

just installed a 320gb harddrive. Installation was SUPER EASY. the harddrive was so easy to take out and I had the right screwdriver for the job so it was just easy. I sat there and was kind of amazed at how well it well. Restoring data now so I thought I'll jump online and post about it. _________________

I would LIKE to have a bigger hard drive, but I haven't run out of space yet, and I would have no idea how to get everything over. Like my downloaded games and game saves.

USB Thumb Drive your saves and downloaded games; then chuck them on your computer. The saves
should all fit on one 2GB thumb drive easy, then you can just go back and forth until you have everything.
Might seem tedious, but if you have no other choice - the option is there. _________________

just get an external USB drive (format it to fat32) do the backup feature and get the PS3 to create an image on that drive. swap the drives, power on ps3, and then go through the restore feature to get everything back.
Its amazingly easy to do. _________________

^ Sorry to confuse you. If he has no external drive, or he can't reformat the external he has -
just for this one purpose - this is my suggestion.
Thumb drive = also amazingly easy. _________________

I don't have an external drive, but I have 2 x 1 GB USB's. Guess that is the only thing I can do. I don't really need a bigger hard drive ATM though, got more than enough room.

Just wondering, does anyone who has upgraded their Hard drive actually filled it up? (200GB +)
If so, does it run slow etc? Just little things like loading game files, or installations? I'm considering upgrading my 60GB to a 250GB.
Thanks. _________________

^ Sorry, I haven't filled up my new drive, but I'd just like to say that something funny is going on when I transfer music files to my PS3 after the upgrade. Sometimes they're all jittery when I listen to them in game. Not sure what's going on with that, if its from the new drive - or the PS3 just sucks at playing songs while in game.
Just something to consider I guess? _________________

another question here, the external hdd does it need its own power source to work? or can it use the ps3's power through usb?
i ask because i have heard mixed results and i would rather ask people that may have one or the other.
i read through the entire thread and read nothing of it, any help would be appreciated thanks. _________________

You can draw power from the USB port. I pulled the PS3 40GB drive out and put it in an enclosure and
it works fine. It just depends whether your enclosure is self powered or not. It works the other way
around too - but not with mine because its not PS3 formatted. _________________

thanks mate, yeh i wasnt sure i saw a couple of external hdd's at big w one had the ac plug, then the other need power from usb, and i read different stories about it on other sites, saying the ps3 cant power it from the usb, and that was the one i wanted because it was cheaper.
now the next step is finding a cheap 320-500gb hdd for inside the 2 ps3's. _________________

^ You might be able to get them back using my sweet trick. It's a couple pages back. I had to do it for Uncharted.
edit:
One of the updates that came with v2.50 could be very handy for these kinds of problems.

[Sync with Server] has been added as an option under [Trophy Collection]. |
It's not quite the same, because the Trophy Collection not syncing with the Game is the problem.
They should add that as an extra option "Sync with Game"

I'm currently upgrading my HDD now. I had no problems using swissknife to format my external HDD to FAT32 and getting the PS3 to read it, and I'm now backing up all my data on my 60GB to it.
EDIT: SUCCESS and CRYSIS AVERTED! I restored my backup to my new drive, and everything is as it was before. I then checked my trophy collection and almost had a heart attack. They were all gone. I calmed myself, and recalled that many of you guys who upgraded the HDD had the same issue, and it's rectified by starting each game for it to re-register. I started PixelJunk Monsters, and this did not happen...
My gaming life flashed before my very eyes, with memories of playing through several games and getting many many a trophy, including the dreaded Gold Trophy in PJM. Why, God, Why... I was so peed off, so to calm myself, I tried getting the easiest trophy in the game, which registered as per normal, exited the game, and checked my trophy collection. As mentioned before, crisis averted. All my PJM trophies that I had earned prior to the HDD upgrade showed up. Thanks ye Gods for their sympathy for us trophy whores.
Question. Do I have to do this for every trophy-enabled game? Ie, boot up each game for the trophies I have already earned from them to show up in my collection? _________________

^ Just the ones that don't load, which sounds like every game for you - which sucks. Have you tried doing a manual sync from the XMB Trophy page?
I only had to do it for Uncharted. Someone else had to do it for Burnout: Paradise. I guess we can add Monsters tot the list of annoying workarounds. _________________

Yeah, I did try syncing but that didn't work. I had to load up every game individually for them to show up in my collection, and than sync for the ones I've already earned to show up. It was an annoyance (that hopefully will be fixed), but I'm not too fussed. The rest of the procedure was so easy and worked perfectly. _________________

Is there any difference using a 16mb 5400rpm drive, instead of a 8mb?

just a quick question,
my 60 gb died, but i have some data on it i want (pictures etc.) now if i just get a 2.5" sata hdd enclosure, does anyone know if i can just put the hdd out of the ps3 into the enclosure, then just plug it in though usb to my other ps3 to take off the data?
or do i have to do alot more then just that? if so what else?
had to put alot of my pictures from my computer onto something, and at the time i didnt have an external hdd laying around, so the ps3 is where they all went. so im desperate to get them off the ps3's hdd before i send it back for repair. _________________
