Who uses it?

I'm going to start using it a bit more. Started a new account since my old one was only thatsmymouse related.

Also started a PALGN one using twitterfeed;

Thanks for the link to twitterfeed - might switch the gameparents one over to that so I don't have to crosspost.

Well that's a pretty poor turnout (no offence Andy icon_wink.gif ). Really enjoying twitter now. I figured I was a bit behind the times when Kevin Rudd starts using tech before I do, but looking at the PALGN response, I guess not icon_smile.gif

I don't really get it.

I did check it out after you made the thread, because I keep hearing the name...

Eh. All these things are only beneficial if everyone you know uses it. Right?

Yes and no. I've already built up a network of people I don't know outside of twitter. Adding friends of friends or "famous" (net famous) people. Pretty cool getting regular updates from Kevin Rudd about what he's doing.

I would follow you (if I had an account) but I just saw you've only just discovered the argument/contradiction Monty Python sketch. You truly are behind the times.

On Twitter: I don't think it's anywhere near mainstream, or will ever become so. It's only useful if you have an audience. Most people don't have enough people that give enough of a **** about what they're doing at every moment of the day, in addition to a Facebook status. I really don't see Twitter ever being useful to people who aren't internet famous, politicians (see Obama's account) or celebrities.

Those were my sentiments exactly right up until last weekend. I was at a startup conference and saw half the people there twittering away and wondered what I was missing out on. Came home and started a new account and started adding a few people from the conference to get some more info on things that had been said.

One of the tricks to twitter is that it works best when you don't answer "what are you doing" unless it's interesting or out of the normal. Most of the time it's like having a public conversation where anyone can join in. Like a forum only more personal.

Twitter is awesome if you want to keep tabs on people in your industry, or if you want to be noticed. I use it as something I call "ambient conversation" - I don't read every tweet made by everyone I follow, but I'll scan the list a few times a day, and respond when appropriate.

I have Twitter automatically update my Facebook status, so for those friends of mine who don't Twitter and who enjoy the Facebook world, I've still got regular connections into them.

I also use OutTwit which is a plug-in for Outlook. It means I can just type a sentence in a textfield within Outlook and hit enter and it's done. And all the updates come into a separate folder within Outlook too so I can get the info easy. Oh, and if anyone replies to me, it marks it as important so I can easily find messages aimed at me.

Then there's the times when there's a conference (which one were you at James?), you use a unique tag that others can search against. Sometimes you'll find other people who also twittered about the same event and get hooked up that way.

There's the occasional weirdness moment though - I went over to Perth to meet a bunch of universities and companies interested in supporting students and I sat down to lunch with these two guys who proceeded to comment about some of the stuff I'd done recently. Turned out that even though I had never spoken to these guys before, both followed me on Twitter - helped make the connection straight away.

It's definitely a "you get it or you don't" kind of service, but I'd prefer people to actually try it and then say "nah, not for me" rather than say "nup" before trying it.

Oh, @samiboi - you should follow @MajorNelson if you listen to his podcasts... he also gives out XBLA codes from time to time exclusively on Twitter and besides, it's interesting hearing what he's up to. icon_smile.gif

@James - no offence taken. I've been using Twitter actively for a couple of years now and have got a huge amount of value out of it. icon_smile.gif

[edit]
Oh, and Twitter helped me get my current job in both directions. Firstly, I was able to keep tabs on the guy who was responsible for the hiring decision, and was able to talk to him about stuff outside the job interview itself - helped build deeper relationships. And secondly, because he and a few others in his team already followed my Twitter-feed, they knew what kind of person I was and that I wasn't afraid of getting out in front of people...

Oh, have I mentioned that I love my job? Being active on Twitter, blogging regularly and making sure I do things like Facebook are actually looked at as being "good things to do". icon_smile.gif

Like James, I would have agreed with you up until a short while ago. I fall into none of your categories (unless you count being a PALGN writer as internet famous icon_wink.gif ), and I use it all the time. The secret is that it's less of a "facebook status without the rest of facebook" and more of a way to have very short, quick and easy conversations with a wide variety of people.

I still don't see it as useful for those who don't have an audience. If you're a celebrity, sure, but if you're Joe Blow, I don't see the usefulness of it if you already have Facebook as a way to connect with friends.

Then again, I didn't bank on who ****ing self absorbed a lot of people are:

^ It is actually my personal news tool. Everything is being talked about within minutes. Live updates. Pics. Videos. The real experience, not what is on the news.

Egypt. Tunisia. Libya. Just some of the examples.

It is very, very useful. Just have to follow the right people.

Please don't compare it to Facebook. Ever.

I agree with you on that. I follow people and check it most days, it's how I keep in direct touch with what's going on with the F1 drivers and community, as well as tech and certain celebrities (eg Simon Pegg). But I don't tweet at all and don't see the usefulness of it in that regard for 99% of the population.

For communicating with people you know, I see Facebook as a far better tool, and that's why it's the more ubiquitous option for doing that. If you're communicating with friends, why limit yourself to what Twitter is capable of (and it is very limited communication). The benefits of the limited communication are really only useful if you're using it to efficiently reach a large audience.

To me, Twitter is read only, Facebook is read/write.

I know many don't see it that way, but I disagree with that use case (no matter how popular it is) and point back to the SMH article on a narcissistic youth (damn kids these days etc).

[EDIT] Missed Theory's post right before Spanca's. [/EDIT]

Theory & Spanca pretty much nailed it in terms of following news & communities. It's really handy as an informative tool if you want instant access to information from the source.

And following info is as easy as looking at the latest trending subjects too.

I've got all the twitter accounts I follow grouped into separate lists (gaming, technology, music, etc), and using an app on my iPad called Flipboard, I essentially have a magazine layout to read articles from twitter links. It's really handy too when I usually browse multiple sites (PALGN, Kotaku, etc as one example) and with Twitter lists I can see all the latest updates at once.

Saying that, Facebook is the better tool for personal communication, but I've linked mine with Twitter. Posting on the latter, it pushes it onto Facebook so I can communicate to all of my friends across both mediums.

My Twitter account is http://twitter.com/ShortRaver

It's great for news, but I use it for keeping up with writers, publishers and writing. So many great tools out there. I'm @Mikes005.

I'd also recommend following Seth MacFarlane. Funny as hell.
