Condemned has made me immune to being scared of any kind of horror. It's definitely my favourite videogame horror franchise. I'm currently playing Dead Space, and I just don't find it scary at all. Don't get me wrong, it's an incredible game, but ever since playing through both Condemned games, nothing manages to fill my pants with unrelenting grit. _________________

I voted Silent Hill but I have to say bobboblaw is definitely onto something... the Condemned games are absolute gems and an incredible experience.

I voted for Silent Hill. COndemned is a ***** though. I also found FEAR was phenomenally scary as well, I think most of that was because I was a guntoting badass yet, there was nothing I could really do about all the psychological stuff happening around me, I couldn't simply lob a grenade and it would go away, so for that reason FEAR is definitely up there as one of my scariest experiences in gaming.
That said, neither FEAR, nor Condemned, have got anything on Silent Hill 2, imho.

i should get around to picking up condemned for the PC. the footage i've seen of it didn't make it seem that great, and its scare tactics didn't seem to be in the right place.
I think the scariest series i've played was Forbiden Siren. Even with the god awful dub, the game freaked out a bit. Also gets frustrating though, because the enemies can't be killed. _________________

Resident Evil gah that should not even be on there - its the least scary of any horror game even in its PS1 days i mean its basically duke nuke em with out the cheesy one liners ( then again there are one liners but not the same style ) set in a 3rd person role with a bigger plot holed story dont get me wrong i like RE but if anyones ever seen RE vs SH well it shouldn't be RE vs anything , surprisingly alone in the dark was a bit scary ...

Mine are .. weird. As a kid I played a lot of the DOS era PC games, one of my favourites being Descent. Now, as a 4/5 year old, Descent was unsettling and frightening (while not exactly being 'horror'). That game practically shat atmosphere, made you feel so lonely and cold inside after playing for a while.
I got FEAR when it came out on the PC in 2005 and I found that provided a few scares as well, playing after 12am with the lights off and headphones on. Those invisible stalker guys that jumped down from the ceiling panels had me on edge for the entire Armacham section (pretty sure it was that part, memory is fuzzy, should replay it).
Yeah as you can see I haven't played many 'scary' games. Have played Silent Hill on PS1 and found it dull, Resident Evil 4 was meh (haven't finished it though) and Doom 3 is probably better described as tense rather than frightening.
I'm starting a playthrough of System Shock 2 soon which from what I understand will make me shit my pants. Sounds fun. Also have Condemned on 360 which I haven't touched yet.. _________________

Should have an option for "I don't play horror games", as that's what I would have voted for. Personally I don't have much interest in them (same goes for movies). _________________

Definately Resident Evil first... played all of them and finished them all so i guess thats why it gets my vote. But the Project Zero series is great... and i'm having a blast with Dead Space too - so that may be an interesting franchise too when they make some more games. _________________

I'd go with Condemned, but I don't play many (or any?) other horror games. By the end of the first level I had enough of psychotic hobos hiding behind pillars and shelving.
But hey, it was $8 on clearance at K-Mart, I couldn't *not* get it. I should probably try to beat that game... one day... _________________

I notice the question asks "favourite" series rather than "scariest" series. That makes a difference.
Preferred source would have to be Bioshock or Resident Evil 4, but I don't think either of them are particularly scary compared to Silent Hill 2 or Condemned 2. However, they are slightly better games in my opinion.
I think the Condemned series should have been there if we are talking scary.
Personally, I would have voted for Tiger Woods golf. Has anyone else noticed that the crowds in those games look like they've been taken over by body-snatchers?
Or any new game branded with Sonic - I'm afraid of how bad they are going to be. Is that the same thing? _________________

I would have voted system shock but it was bundled with bioshock which was just too watered down to vote for .
Instead I voted resident evil, played through the wii version of RE4 and it was great fun, not really that scary, but very good fun

FEAR, and Sin pretty much nailed my reasons. as a guntoting grunt, you could easily dispatch the shooting elements of the game, but there was sweet FA you could do about the horror elements.
it was also fantastically atmospheric, which is what all my favourite horror games, or even horror elements (Vampire's Hotel, Thief's asylum) are.
System Shock 2 would also have to rank up there.
any game that has to release a patch to remove enemies to make certain members of the community even able to play it, is instant win in the horror department. Arachnophobics beware.
Alone in the Dark - the very original, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem and Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth are also classics in my book, not least because the also combine HP Lovecraft with the scares.

pussy.
seriously though, we used to run through the issue of every poll having a "I don't play <question subject" and everytime they were clear winners, and it took several polls before these were removed, and personally, i'm glad, as it really skews the poll.
if it's not relevant, don't vote. _________________

Oh come on, no Doom 3 option?
Sure, the first two didn't have enough atmosphere to be truly scary, but i shat myself multiple times through Doom 3. _________________

I picked RE because it's my favourite horror series.
But in terms of scariest, it's definitely Project Zero for me.I actually stopped playing the game lol.
Other than PJ and SH, I don't find horror games scary.I find it hard to be scared by things I know aren't real. That's the reason for me, the scariest part of Condemned 2 is the bear chasing you. _________________ Welcome to the internet. Where any joke can turn into WWIII.
