good book, you guys should read it sometime.
Personally I don't think the system is broken, sometimes when i scroll through pages briskly reading it's contents of it's fine members it's normally the posts which have plusses or neg's that make me pause and take the time to read and ponder it's meaning.
But the forums are ever improving, and so are the people. |

This thread is still going? Look, I always post my opinion and I've had no problems getting plusses - in fact, I think you're more likely to score pluses if you have a unique view on a certain issue than another user who jumps in the bandwagon and posts exactly the same thing as the preceding ten posters. The system encourages good discussion, the negatives teach people how not to act.
I don't think new users are targeted, there are plenty of posters who have had seamless introductions to the community (BoomBoom, EatChildren, A13x all come to mind from the past year). On the contrary I find myself less likely to punish a new user (except for blatant assholery), if someone with 30 posts throws a one liner 'I'm playing Gears lol' into the what-are-you-playing-thread, I'll most likely let it slide, but someone who's been around for a while should expect a shiny new neg.
I certainly think the plus/neg system has improved my own posting habits. So often I'll open up a thread and begin writing a reply - and more than half the time I'll stop and close the window if I find myself not making a strong enough point or merely echoing the posters before me. Yes, corny one-liners will get a flood of pluses while serious discussion will regularly get ignored, but all aspects of life are like that. What do you think has higher ratings, Rove Live or The 7.30 Report?

although the pluses don't really go anywhere...
i wish there was more of a reward system on the forums, like a wider variety of things to spend on your pluses.

it might also be prudent to reiterate that you can't actually post something, and lose $poons overall.
posts with a net positive vote will "win" $poons for the poster, but negs will only affect that post's score, not the cumulative score.
so you could post something that gets 1 plus, and 100 negs, but your overall $poon count will only ever be affected by 0.

i have said, changes likely won't happen (or at least in any "speedy" time) mostly because this site is run as a hobby of the admins, not as a job, and there's more important things they're working on, both for PALGN, and for their "day jobs". |
Obsolute I get it. I myself have moved on ever since that fiasco. But the truth is folks like Fetidchimp still keep on bring it up. As shown here as well.
Also, I started a discussion about the bail out and I was stunned when I checked back later only to see it had been locked by the moderator.
I now get it, the folks here dont like discussing hard hitting real life issues. Thats fine by me. Thats why I am keeping my comments strictly on game related issues.

no, you started a thread belittling the members of the board using the events of "Black Monday" as a thinly veiled disguise.
the Moderator even said at the time, feel free to start a serious discussion on the issue, but there's no need for telling people off because no one else had seen fit to start a thread previously. it might simply be that it doesn't matter as much to other people here as much as it does you, or that we didn't have time to discuss it in text as we were dealing with it IRL, or perhaps we didn't understand what was happening, and didn't feel informed enough to begin the topic, or perhaps that not everyone here is an adult, or independant, so mightn't know, or care, about the situation, or a multitude of other reasons.
whatever the reason for it not being discussed, there's no excuse to go off at people for not having the same priorities as you.
this was the root cause as to why the thread was locked, to not having another thread devolve into mud-slinging and name-calling, not because no one felt like dealing with a hard-hitting issue.
