I like the plus neg system. I don't post FOR a plus or a neg, and not for spoons, but it's nice to get some + lovin' from time to time.
I still write what I think.
Without it it can often seem like you're posting in a vaccume - you never know if what you write is even being read, let alone liked.
I use it in three distinct ways.
1) If the post is eloquent
2) If I agree with the post (Top 10 lists/latest purchases etc replete with personal favourites)
3) As a check mark - to say yep I've read this post (especially if its directed at me personally)
If I was to augment the system I would add a couple of new flavours of positive and negative check boxes.
 / = good/bad post
 / = agree/disagree
 / = funny/not funny. made me happy/sad

it's a nice idea, but it's also not without it's complications.
are people able to vote in 2 or 3 of the categories, or is it restricted to 1?
if we are able to vote in 2+ categories, are $poon plusses cumulative, or is it 1 bump (or minus) per post.
what about opposing feelings? i mean, it's possible to agree with a post, but it makes you sad, or it might be a good post, but you disagree with the contents - does this give a +$poon, then a -$poon?
or do you want it like a step-by-step thing? so if you vote, you'll be pressing 2 buttons:
good/bad -> agree/disagree//happy/sad
the issue then becomes: is the old system broken enough to warrant these further complications, and the work involved in working out the coding of this new system?
(and "does the person doing the coding have the time to spare?")

As i imagine it, you just pick the one that most expresses your feelings.
The system works pretty well as it is - complication is of the devil.
Choose the best fit as applicable - its plussing and negging with a little more meaning!
Maybe the thumbs up thing would not add to the popular post tally. An ONYA mate!
That way giveaway threads and purchases of anything Starwars related don't show up as awesome by consensus.

If we had something like this, I would imagine it would work best if you only got spoons for the +'s. If used right, this would only award the good posts, while the other categories would simply be used as +'s / -'s are sometimes used now, for agreement or whatever, and would produce no spoon benefit (otherwise it goes back to the original problem of popular opinions being rewarded and unpopular opinions being punished).
So basically, there would be 4 options
1) well written post that you agree with = +, thumbsup, gets spoons
2) well written post you don't agree with = +, thumbsdown, gets spoons
3) badly written post you agree with = - (or neutral), thumbsup, no spoons
4) badly written post you don't agree with = - (or neutral), thumbsdown, no spoons
It does make the system a lot more complicated though, perhaps with little reward.

personally, i like Dopp's idea. Sometimes, i disagree with someone's posts, but i like their point. It could avoid just a plain neg.
Or sometimes a post is really funny, but you disagree with the point.
But then the 'reward' interface would look kind of cluttered.

I like it too. As I said, I use it in all manner of ways ALREADY. There is no WRONG and RIGHT way. Mass neggings are a bit mean though.
There may be a magic combination of plus and minus, thumbs up and down spoons for some but not for all with a sensible tally for the "recently popular posts bit". Divining that magical mix is the tough bit. We have the perfect environment here for a field test. But the effort involved to find that balance just might be too much for questionable reward.

DIU's more detailed thing of Dops idea is good.
I don't know how much effort would go into it though, maybe it would be a simple mod of the plus minus system? Maybe a whole lot of work.
If its easy, I think it would be a cool thing to trial, if its hard we can live without it.

The voting system is an interesting side play in the most part. It is overtly populist but then again we wouldn't in the most part be here if we didn't like the same things. It's nice to see opinions supported and stupid ones negged takes responsibility off others shoulders. Rather than 15 i agrees posted or 15 i disagree a +/-.
Really the voting system is like those psychological inkblot tests the more you stare at it the more you'll see and if you look too long you'll burn your retina's out and chew your own bum off. Now that's finished Jesus commands give us all your spoonies

good book, you guys should read it sometime.
Personally I don't think the system is broken, sometimes when i scroll through pages briskly reading it's contents of it's fine members it's normally the posts which have plusses or neg's that make me pause and take the time to read and ponder it's meaning.
But the forums are ever improving, and so are the people.

Believe me the system is broken. Seriously the PALGN staff need to rethink the way pluses and negs are allocated, especially the negs.
Look at my profile for example. I already havea whooping 74 negs after only 90 posts and a month joined. But the main issue I want to highlight why the system is broken is that half of my negs have only come from 6 people.
So basically they are serial negers (sic).
Its unfair.
I proposed a couple of good ideas but the PALGN staff wont listen them now will they.
1 - Allocate a set number of pluses or negs a member can give to others on a periodical basis. Example, a member allowed to give an unlimited number of pluses but only ten negs a month.
2 - Since new members cant vote until 25 posts, isnt it fair to make them immune from negs until they too can vote?
PALGN has a lot of great members, it just needs more fine tuning in its voting system.

why should we "believe you"? it's only broken (in your opinion) because you trolled to make a point, and it backfired.
if you really feel you're being picked on by a particular person, or group of people, PM a mod with proof (links to your posts that you feel were unfairly negged) and we'll look into it. there have been a few legitimate claims of neg-abuse in the past, and we have dealt with it, but when your introduction to the people of PALGN was trolling to prove a point, why are you surprised when the reaction was that that is given to any troll?
people disagreed with your opinion (or at least, the opinion you presented to the people), and you were negged for it. your ratio (at a glance) is not really indicative of any form of brokeness. but since all you've done is complain about it, but not offer us any proof, a glance is all we've spared it.
anyway, you have offered your opinions on the system, but likewise "wont listen" to the rebuttals.
i have said, changes likely won't happen (or at least in any "speedy" time) mostly because this site is run as a hobby of the admins, not as a job, and there's more important things they're working on, both for PALGN, and for their "day jobs".

Have you actually gone back and re-read the things you posted? or the replies you received?

personally, i'm opposed to the idea of a set number of pluses and negs allocated to a member on a periodical basis. Some members plus heaps, and its a good way to see that your posts are of reasonable quality. If there was a limit, it may kill off those pluses, and the forums would become a darker place.
But i like the idea that new members should be immune to negs.
