Bad news for Nintendo - Their software has been cracked. Several titles have been dumped on the "community", and while they are currently unplayable (there's no mod chip for the Cube), now that the ISO's are out there it's only a matter of time.

Current titles ripped and released are;

Zelda : Wind Waker;
Action Replay;
Freeloader.

Goodbye software royalties, goodbye Nintendo... icon_lol.gif

Well, no, not really. The percentage of people who will be able to pirate software will be small, but it will be interesting to see the outlandish claims that the company will invariably make. RIAA, anyone?

A development worth watching.

It was bound to happen eventually - everyone seemed to think it would be the Q that did them in.

They'd actually have to figure out a way to get the Gamecube to read the discs - seeing as GC discs are written in some weird and wonderful fashion.

I think things would have been sped up if the Xbox hadn't been around at the same time. As far as modding and homebrew, the Xbox had so much more potential so I'm guessing it received the lions share of the crackers efforts. If the GC had come with a HD and NIC then it might have been a different story.

Untill the home user can actually get the discs and required hardware to burn the isos successfully it doesn't really mean all that much. It is the first step towards GC piracy though i guess. icon_sad.gif

By the time they work out how to actually run them on a system, Gamecube's successor will be on shop selves.

8cm discs are freely available. They won't need to fit a full GB of data (such as that of the prop. GC discs) on each disc as audio and video files can be downsampled. This is the same technique that allows a 2.5GB Xbox game to fit onto a single 700MB CD. Proprietary discs are not the issue.

I'd say my logic is, well, fairly logical and based on pretty realistic assumptions and occasionally hard evidence. Tell me where I've gone wrong?

Did you read my very next sentence? I was making a comment about the kind of rubbish you'll be reading from Nintendo next, if this piracy begins to become more visible.

You're a bit of a dick, aren't you? Why don't you head over to the topic about Edge scoring while you're at it and lay some evidence on me?

But Gamecube discs are read inversely to normal discs. You're gonna have to figure out how to burn shit in reverse.

Not sure what you are talking about...I'm talking about the way the cube reads the format...Simply placing it on the disc will surely not be enough...

Yes the first track on a GOD starts at the edge of the disc, not the centre.

I suppose the guys involved must be fairly confident that they can surpass this obstacle. What in the hardware would dictate the order in which the disc is read? I don't see how this could be a physical issue - if the disc could only be read from outside in, all data would have to be sequential on the disc and wouldn't allow for any backtracking. So surely this is software, and if so, can be overcome by chipping the cube?

also guys this would be possible as the hackers have managed to get hold of the NR-Writer software and reverse engineer it too, so they should be able to write it the way that they want, and with the help of a mod chip it may become readable on a retail gcn

And the burner that they use to write the discs is the Matsushiiita DVD-R SW9501. There is info how to burn using this burner in the pdf file of the NOA dev kit which is available at certain locations on the net...

These releases are real. They were released on the 14th and already people have created tools to extract the audio into windows .wav files and also the headers of the isos. Once a mod is created it could be very possible that the piracy begins to happen.

note: i had to write matsushiiita weird cos the forum censored it as it thought it said shit icon_rolleyes.gif

That all depends on whether or not the laser reading style is hardware driven or just dictated by the bios. If its driven by the bios, then a mod will be all that is needed, but then they have to work the bios out, work out solder points as well as a method of booting, and if it's anything like the PS2 case was it could take up to 18 months before a decent mod solution is available. I suspect that they may use the freeloader as a bootdisc..then again, I'm no guru. If it's hardware driven, they're up the creek, though the Q may be a more likely solution in that case with its dual lasers.

Didn't Nintendo dump the NR format for removeable hard drives for devkits early last year?

I'm not saying it's not possible, it has always been inevitable, I'm just saying that it may not be as close as some think.

well, more progress today. action replay and freeloader have successfully been booted on a retail gcn...

I have great news for everyone! I have finally worked on and finished a public version of my GameCube Phantasy Star Online (PSO) code sending tool! This program allows you to send binary and DOL format GameCube program files to your GameCube and boot them. All PSO regions are supported: U.S. V1.0 and V1.1, JPN V1.0 and V1.1, and PAL 50Hz and 60Hz. Much more information is included in the readme.txt file and a simple little demo of mine is included as well. The demo is completely free and has been written without any use of the illegal SDK. It is easily compilable with Torlus' GCC release and I will soon release the full source code once I clean it up a bit. Also, a friend of mine, Titanik[CZN], has written his own PSO code loader tool. It is very similar to mine, as it supports loading both binary and DOL files and works several PSO versions as well. He also wrote a free demo of his own and has included it along with his program. For some strange reason, however, my loader cannot boot his demo correctly and likewise his loader cannot boot my demo correctly. icon_smile.gif So, it's probably worth your time to download both GC PSO program loaders to try them out on your homebrew GC programs. Finally, GameCube homebrew development may begin! Download my GC PSO program loader (with my little demo included) here and Titanik[CZN]'s GC PSO program loader (with his test demo as well) here! Have fun and post about the programs in the GCDev.com forums!!! icon_wink.gif

Probably - they were on top of Ultra HLE within about 2 days of its release - didn't really stop the effect.

Will the hardware be hacked...hmmhhmhmmhmhmh.

Well as an indication, look at the difficulties Datel had with getting the GCN to even read discs of any sort. It put A LOT of resources and TIME into that.

been speakin to some ppl trying different things...

one guy burnt the zelda iso to mini-dvd-r and swapped the disc during gameplay and said it works fine. However he said after he saved and it asks if you want to continue play, and you select no, it messed up. But at least it proves that the cube can read the mini dvdr's

All thats needed is a bootup and the scene will be in full swing...although it may never happen.
