I'm playing Disgaea 3, and loving it. icon_smile.gif I've been waiting 7 months for the U.S version of the game to be released, and damn it's good to be playing it at last! There's quite a few improvements over Disgaea 2, and the game is just as addictive as those that came before it, I've played 17 hours so far. The story, voice acting, music and art are all top notch as usual, quite a bit of effort has been put in.

spent like 3 hours playing Fable 2 Pub-Games.
actually i never made it past Fortune's Tower (the card game), which being a total arse in the first ante available - i ended up with several hundred gold's debt for a long time, before i finally got onto the second table and started making money.

anyway, made some money for my Fable 2 hero to start with, no idea if i'll ever play it again pre-release, though i guess i should check out the other two games just to see what they're like.

Ahhhh.. wow. Haven't touched TF2 since my last post, I fired up Half-Life 2 last Friday and finished it tonight. Yeah, I've played through it before but that was over the space of almost a year which killed part of the experience.

Upon revisiting the game, its rocketed into my top 5 easily. Where to begin.. probably the graphics. For a game released in 2004, it looks damn brilliant. Slightly rough around the edges nowadays, but still stunning. The implementation of its physics engine is particularly awesome though, maybe I'm impressed easily or something but when I hurled a watermelon at a wall only to see it crumble into individual pieces I could pick up and hurl again to break into even smaller pieces.. my mind was blown (y'know, remembering it's from 2004).

Yeah, so maybe the technology behind the physics engine isn't exactly revolutionary, but the way it is implemented within the gameplay is. The gravity gun is sheer genius and somehow fits in as an authentic weapon/tool that doesn't feel tacked on at all, evenly balanced amongst your other weapons.

The AI shows intelligence, seeming to communicate, flank and whatnot making it all a bit more believable and immersive. The long zombie sections were okay and not too much of a drag despite the conversely brain-dead AI (besides Ravenholm.. easily the let-down in an otherwise fantastic game).

I've played Half-Life before, I'm aware of the whole silent protagonist, short number of dialogue lines and whatnot and I think that suits the game well, it's rather impressive that the story is conveyed so well despite these factors. The lack of cutscenes is a good thing as well, keeping you in the eyes of Gordon Freeman is incredibly immersive, and combined with him being a silent protagonist and the seemingly 'interactive scripted action scenes' rather than cutscenes, you really do feel like you are Gordon Freeman. The facial animation system in-place is also incredible for the time (and even today), all the other characters were believable and life-like, I truly cared for them and their fates.

The game isn't without its flaws though. First up would be my major beef - the soundtrack. All my favourite games have killer soundtracks, so it was a bit of a disappointment to find Half-Life 2 has a mediocre, at best, soundtrack. The techno style music, while occasionally good and sometimes even suitable for a particular scene, feels tacked on and comes too rarely in the game. There were far too many epic battles that had absolutely no music going in the background (eg, awesome end sequence..). I felt this little itch that I should be hearing a huge sweeping orchestral masterpiece as I ascended over the sprawling City 17, but yeah.. just a little disappointing anyway. Other real beef would be pea-shooter guns, while some feel fantastic (revolver, shotgun), the pistol and SMG in particular feel like they're firing small pellets rather than bullets. Initially the pistol is more than effective against civil protection officers, but later when you're up against heavy armoured special ops units, you need more than a clip of ammunition from the pistol to take them down. The SMG isn't any better, only useful for it's grenade launcher. Squad control is also tacked on, but was for a short section and wasn't necessarily detrimental to the gameplay.

Soo yeah anyway, a personal best for me to finish a game that quickly. I pre-ordered Episode 1 before release two years ago (never played past the elevator bit) and bought Episode 2 as a part of The Orange Box last year so I've got plenty of awesome gaming ahead. Chhyeah.. another rant.

<3 Half-Life.

But you didn't like ravenholm?
I thought it was a really good, if at times a little annoying, because it scared the shit out of me. The atmosphere that was set as you came into the town was just... incredible.

Ravenholm had me on edge the whole time when i first played the game, but the second time, i really just felt like it was a chore.

i suppose it's probably because with all the booby traps, they're essentially puzzles, with the zombies (and death) being the timer.
but once you know the puzzles, it's just boring.

--
and as an addendum to playing pub-games, i kinda wish i knew the in-Fable 2-game value of the gold. i mean, you start with 500g in Pubgames, but i don't know what that will buy in Fable 2.
is it like $5 IRL?
$500?
etc.
so i don't know if doubling my money is good, or just a timesink...

Dead Rising... Arrgg!

There is so much to love, the zombies, the weapons, the freedom, hell the zombies alone would would warrant a play through.

But **** me it's frustrating. Don't get me started on the save system, and combine that with bosses that are insanely unforgiving and you get some controller-smashing moments. Plus on top of that I find the game rarely gives you any hints with regard to what you should be doing ie. you get dropped into a boss battle, ages away from your last save, with absolutely no idea how you are meant to defeat him. Or you just resort to "follow the arrow" until you hit the next Case File event.

I really think I'm going to have to resort to a walkthrough... And I NEVER use walkthroughs. But I figure it's either that or the game will end up either getting shelved again or frisbeed into a brick wall.

Still on Soul Calibur IV, I'm gonna move onto finishing Ninja Gaiden 2 and Eternal Sonata one of these days or one of the other many, many games I have piled up.

I have a few "classics" to play as well.

Same goes for movies, some people say that I never had a real childhood cause I never watched E.T. or TopGun (or some other "Classics"). I get E.T., but TopGun? Really.

The amount of games I have to play >>> the amount of time I have to play them.

It's just getting beyond ridiculous.

You never saw E.T.!? I'm flabagasted (oh yeah, i said it!). That was like, every kids favorite movie! Though I did find Mac & Me to be more enjoyable as a kid. Nothing cooler than an alien dancing in a teddey bear suit at McDonalds. icon_cool.gif

But yeah, I'm aboard the HL2 train. Finished HL2 and Episode 1 yesterday, and now am halfway through Episode 2. I'm loving it so far, I just want Episode 3 to come out so I can finish it all in a run!

Defend Your Castle - Wii. This is a lot better than I thought, and it really does get hard at level 40. I am trying to get 1000 magicians, so my spells instantly recover. Highly recommend it.

ok, fired up Pub-games again last night to try out the other 2 games.

Keystone is ok, kind of like a cross between Roulette and Craps, where you bet on the roll of 3 die, so 3-18, pairs, triples, straights, highs, lows, reds, blacks, etc etc.
there's a little more to it, but that's the basics.
all in all, not too shabby, quite well designed, and feels very much like a true gambling game. you feel like there's a strategy to placing bets on certain squares.

but Spinnerbox... what complete and utter s**t.
it's essentially a poker machine, you place your bet, press a button to start it spinning, press again and it stops. you win, or you lose.
i couldn't work out any strategy to the game, i couldn't even see any interactivity, since you don't stop the spinners individually, but press A and they stop spinning, that's it.
how the hell are you supposed to win a tournament of this?

but anyway, the game i like best is still Fortune's Tower, the card game.
it's still based heavily on luck, but there is still some strategy in when to press on, and when to quit, either while ahead, or cutting your losses.
plus i won 2 jackpots in a row last night, one of which was a triple jackpot, netting me almost 21,000 gold in 2 games, for a total bet of 1200g. (left the casino with a nett win of about 16,000 gold, after paying off my Keystone and Spinnerbox debts).

so yeah, would be nice to know whether this is a lot, or peanuts.

---
and Mercenaries 2.
really not sure about this game.
it looks pretty cool, but the controls are quite clunky, and the game just feels old, in light of the recent sandbox titles like GTA4, Crackdown and Assassin's Creed.
the thrill of blowing the s**t out of everything is still here, but the buildings don't really explode like i was hoping. i mean, it's still just a health-bar that when depleted, the building explodes, no affected area collapse or anything (well, so far.)

it also looks like it's going to be very short, at least the main campaign. i've done 4 missions, for 16% completion... but looking at the over map, there seems to be heaps to do, in terms of collecting bounties and so on, so i presume the percentage is campaign missions only, or perhaps my current faction/employers missions only, or something.

something else that's annoying, when i got the game, i was given a code to unlock extra clothes for the guys, which is fine, i unlocked them, but they aren't available in an offline game, i'm required to connect to the EA servers to use them.
the problem is, online and offline are identical, except offline just means that randoms can't drop into my game.
and i think Matthias's "Metal" outfit looks better than his default outfit.
makes him look like Lemy from Motorhead.

i might return it, and pick it up again later at some EB 50% off sale, or something...

Finished my first playthrough of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune last night. Apart from what I thought was a naff final fight, all I can say about the game is wow. Pretty tough to not jump straight into another playthrough to get more trophies, but unplayed games beckon.

So with that, I'm now onto Devil May Cry 3: SE. All I've done so far is startup the game and play through the first mission. Been a long, long time since I played DMC1 (I played that when it first came out) and I skipped DMC2. So I'm looking forward to playing through this. Must admit I have a bit of trepidation as well though given all the stories about it being a tough game to get through. I chose the Gold Orbs, so I can have unlimited restarts at the last checkpoint, so we'll see. Must admit to being pleasantly surprised that I didn't find going straight from the graphics of Uncharted into the PS2 level graphics of DMC3 tough thinking the graphics of DMC3 looked rubbish. Says a lot for the level of the games towards the end of the PS2's life cycle.

Im playing through a few atm. On PSP im playing through Warhammer 40k squad command. Im very surprised at how this little title is holding my attention. The whole warhammer series captivates me, yet i dont want to play the tabletop games. Just wish there was more races to choose from.

On PC, im currently pluggin through LOTR:BFME. I'm VERY late getting into this title and the campaigns are so hard but im just absolutely loving the cavelry. Nothing like pummeling through a horde of orcs.

On PS3 just playing through random titles when i find the time, those being battlefield, sega rally (with my son) & civ rev when my son leaves me alone for a bit...

Sort of left the Wii alone for now, but hopefully will be back into either battalion wars or mysims.

Im playing God of War at the moment...it is my first time at this game because I only got my first ps2 at the end of last year and play a LOT of retro games and this 1 finally came up (thanx to the trading section of this site!) and it is sensational!! The graphics are amazing and the gameplay is awesome even though the combat is repetitive. And the story is brilliant.

With the disappointment that was MGS4 maybe GoW3 will be the game that finally gets me to buy a ps3.

Playing thorugh Shivering Isles, almost finished it actually. The main questline is awesome in this one and Sheogorath is one of th best characters ever. After this is done it'll be back to Episode 2 and some Team Fortress 2 for good measure.

Currently playing through Eternal Sonata, just at the start of chapter 4. Really enjoying it so far, the story's not the most compelling but that's made up for by the fun battle system and gorgeous art direction. Some of the areas in the game have just been breath taking to look at, the night time forest stage has probably been the best with the cemetery coming in a close second for looks.

Also sunk a whole heap of time into skate. in the last week and I'm having a blast with it. It totally wipes the floor with the Tony Hawk series (which I haven't really played since 4 or 5). I really like the way that all the tricks are there unlocked from the beginning and it's not your character that's getting better but you as a player. The controls felt really hard when I first started playing but by the 2 or 3 hour mark the just felt so right. Makes it real satisfying pulling some of the harder tricks or completing a pros challenge. Should of seen me the first time I pulled a forward flip, I jumped up from the couch doing a big fist pump I was so excited icon_lol.gif

Too Human.

The combat took a while to get used to, but when you master it is quite satisfying. Fitting your character in the best possible armour and weapons is fun, and I have become near unbeatable as a result.

Since I have only just started I haven't progressed into the story much, and have only beaten the first boss. I can't help but feel many reviewers were too harsh, sure it isn't a masterpiece, but it doesn't have to be a maserpiece to be fun.

Genji PS3

didn't get too far in but I was amazed at the visuals. First gen PS3 and its looks better than Heavenly sword to me. The motion blur when the lead guy jumps around is SO cool
