If the PS3 can run any Singstar PS2 games, why can't it run any PS2 games?

apparently they are working on bringing more BC to non bc ps3's

Man benötige kein PS3-Singstar.
David Reeves explained that the old SingStar games will run via some kind of software emulation coming in a future firmware update.
The games will run without the need of a PS3 SingStar.
Quote:
"Wir beobachten, bei welchen Titeln sich dies noch lohnen wird, und werden in Zukunft möglicherweise weitere PS2-Spiele auf der PS3 per Emulation zum Laufen bringen." Dies sei jedoch ein technisch sehr aufwendiger Prozess, weil die nötigen PS2-Chips den aktuellen PS3-Modellen fehlen.
They are also looking at which other titles are worth a similar update. It's a difficult task, because the new PS3 models lack neccessary PS2-chips. |

Well, dude also said that mirrors edge was timed exclusive. EA has since refuted this saying Mirrors edge is not PS3 timed exlusive.
Singstar has this supposed "BC" where it can load tracks off the PS2 games. Hardly BC imo. _________________

i mean its just software emulation right? a PC can get emulation software for PSX and 64 and i guess the last gen consoles as well can it?? i dont know to much about it.....
but if you put a ps2 in the 40gb console it knows what it is, it says something along the lines of 'this model ps3 is not compatible with ps2 software' maybe you have to train it like a dog... _________________

Singstar isn't one of those resource hungry PS2 titles - I don't think it is anyhow. Its not like the engine/ps2 would have to crunch AI or anything like that.
I think it will be great to get BC back but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. If they were going to do it, they would have done it by now - either via BC on PS3 or DLC for PS2 games on PSN. _________________

from what i've read, I think you have to put in the ps3 version of singstar and when you want to play a song from one of your ps2 discs you just press select and change the disc over while still in the ps3 interface. So I guess you can only play the songs and not the whole game without a ps3 version.

If you could copy the songs to the ps3 hard drive so singstar ps3 could access them, i would go out right now and get ps3 singstar. But if SoxyRob is right about the whole bs disk swapping business, I'd rather give it a miss. _________________

Singstar PS2 only works while hotswapping the PS3 version, can't copy onto the HDD for storage, hopefully allowing hotswapping will stop them re-releasing the crap onto the store (they'll probably contniue to give those who don't have the PS2 versions to get access to previous songs etc)
and while the US 60/20GB consoles operated from a chip, the PAL version's have always been run from software emulation haven't they? so there's no saying why they couldn't include it in firmware for the other consoles, not too sure about how that operates. _________________

The US consoles had two chips for PS2 backwards compatability. The PAL consoles only had one of those two chips, so the functions of the second chip was what was software emulated.
I can't remember offhand what the chips were...probably the CPU and GPU or whatever stupid names they came up for them. _________________
