I don't want to take any sides but just would like to point out that PALGN is one of the best and most mature gaming sites around.
Have a look at the posts the biggest gaming sites like IGN , GAMESPOT , GAMETRAILERS etc. Any article, game video , review, preview etc is turned into a flame war. I have now stopped reaing comments from those sites because it is so predictable what the thread will end being. And that is a flame war. Its as if most people with accounts there are 12 years olds.
I dont know anyone on this site as I am still knew, but I do enjoy reading the the contributions from various people on this site. There is the occasional fanboy rants of course, but generally most posts are civil and informative.
So I myself will say PALGN RULEZ!

While I think leaving the boards is a little extreme and would probably be perfect subject matter for a South Park episode I do believe it lends itself as proof that some members either really need to...
A) Clean up their act
B) Get a new hobby
C) Get the f**k off the forum
Now I myself have been controversial in the past and have often supported Jibbs in most of his battles with other members. (The "Jap" one comes to mind) however when a member writes a long winded post basically telling each and every member their favourite video company sucks balls because they bought a game they themselves knew they weren't going to like and has a massive cry about receiving some form of reaction only to hide behind some moderator, truly I can empathise with AndyPuppy.
Now I don't consider myself perfect, I've made mistakes in the past (Jibbs may remember one! that's how I met him) and I've offended a few posters in my time. But through these mistakes I've become a much better person as a whole.
Now before ugh aims his 'money' shot my way I used your example as it's one that's stuck with my for awhile and one that I thought that was truly disgraceful. I enjoy your passion in life and as a member however there are times where I feel there is something horribly wrong with you and you think your above the rules and above each and every other member.
Those are just my two cents and I sure as hell invite a response. _________________

I do have to agree with AA there. As a whole, PALGN users seem more likely to post interesting, intellectual gaming conversations compared to other websites I've visited in the past. Hence why my post rate per day keeps going up lately, I'm here far too often.
But I can understand the 'taking a break' approach, I've had my own times where I've left a site for a while. It's a good idea. I don't know you, unfortunately, but here's hoping you return shortly.

I dont really thnik you need a 'break' just cuz the forums are getting a little choppy, i have probably had alot to do with it, but oh well things come and things go, just because some forum members have a bit of a go at one another isnt any reason to stop coming to the forums...

I like to argue. It's what I do and what I intend to be employed doing for my working life (lawyer).
Now while I don't always agree with the way Ugh gets his point across in a far from eloquent way, he has opinions, he sticks to them, and he substantiates them. I think that makes him a far better poster than those who just post drivel without backing it up, regardless of what you think of the content of his posts.
If you don't like his posting, or his style, then don't read his posts. It's not like there's a voice speaking that you can't avoid hearing. It's written words that you are choosing to read, so if you don't want to hear them then don't read them to yourself. _________________

forums. the best place to vent your anger upon multiple people at once about a particular topic. a place where one can be a smart arse to others without having to show his face around town (let just hope they ain't stuck in their closet playing wow and eating maccas every 12 hours.). vent vent vent, bitch bitch bitch. thats forums. +1 point.
forums. a place where you can create a whole new 'you' online. personalise your hairstyles with avatars, create clothes with signatures, personalie character traits with 'tell us a bit about yourself'. disappear and return later undercover as a new user, the magical disappearing act. kill your rep, start a new 'character.' +1 point.
take sides, discuss opinions, yell at each other with !!!!!!!!#!#%!#$!*&$!!!!!!'s and f*********************ck!!!!!'s to save your voicebox for games requiring ventrilo. have the last say by undertaking 'ban' and 'kicked' action from higher powers. +1 point.
palgn is like another community. just online. remember school days (for those who have finished school)? you have your group you hang out with, the jerks, jeeks, jocks, jolly'uns, jemos, it wouldn't be a community without em all. so +1 more point for community.
rant rant rant, another thing about posts. dunno where they lead, what you're venting on about by the end, and if anyone will bother to read it all. /rant.
i think thats about it. can't even remember the topic anymore _________________

I never post in these topics, but I entirely agree really. I'm scared to post in some topics about games lest I be shot down for liking it; e.g. I've just bought Galaxy or something, I post in a Galaxy topic, "this is the best game I've ever played!" These days I can expect several people to say "well actually you're stupid, it's not the best game ever, you're gonna change your mind, get over it," either that directly or more subtly. Maybe they're right, maybe not, but it totally sucks the fun out of the discussion and turns it into a debate which will quickly spiral into flame wars. The number of times I've browsed a topic and thought the words "well gtfo the thread then" has increased astronomically around here.
I'm obviously not taking time off for it though, but my average posting day to day has decreased massively as a result of OP's reasoning.
EDIT: vvv Well I personally could never leave; I've visited every day for over six years now, most other forums just bug me - the majority of others have so many more problems, it just seems like these are beginning to slide that way too... _________________

Take breaks. Honestly. I've been babysitting a site for two years, it has over 30,000 members and it's a handful. I've "left" it three times and now they call it "pulling a dani" if someone says they're leaving for a period of time.
It gives you a change of scene for your mind, so you can keep your cool and come back with a more positive attitude. Take up some other hobbies for a while, then come back when you're ready.
It's also good to move to other sites for a while (sorry to encourage members away from PALGN) - it can be refreshing to experience a different type of community. I ended up creating my own offtopic community aside from the gaming one I "babysit"; it's a good place to cool off with a few online friends and rant random bullshit.

I'm far more likely to support an arguement that;
a) doesn't contain large quantities of swearing
and
b) doesn't demean the poster that originally posted it

This forum has been going downhill in recent months.
I wouldn't attribute this to an increases in 'narkey-ness' though....but an increase in prepubescent users whose posts are just plain junk.
seriously, after reading a post more than half the time I think to myself, "that was a f*** waste". _________________

Try making a PS3 thread at Aussie Nintendo sometime, one guy described me as the gay black *** at the kkk convention.
You also can't speak of any flaws of Pokemon at Serebii without some 8 year old giving his very contradicting opinion which we all know is just based of complete ignorance for the fact that its Pokemon >>
EDIT: Actually coming to think of it, most forums that go popular go downhill. I remember back to when Aussie Nintendo before the Wii was released, gosh those days were good. Funnily enough nearly everyone who posted back then has left except of course the Captain of the site, named Captain.

^Not necessarily.
Sure it can (and has) happen to large forums, but there's examples of other enormous communities that generally keep the love. Anyone visiting Eurogamer's forums will uncover a lot of personality there, those crazy Brits, and the Gamespy (Forumplanet) community is still surviving after a major change in format. Both large sites that attract great posters. If people here keep their head up, maybe take a break every so often so they don't burn out (like Andy has), PALGN's community can remain as strong as it's ever been. _________________ My Photos

Oh so true! This is the reason I stopped going to LAN parties and such. I have no problem with a bit of friendly rivalry, but if someone is going to insult me over the net, then they can expect a confrontation if I see them in person. I got sick of going to lans in my hometown (Bendigo) because there was always one loudmouth on the net who liked to insult people and once you made it clear that if they keep it up they'll get a punch in the teeth they shut their trap real quick.
Shouldn't have to be like that though, even only being here a little while there are already people I don't like but I don't minus their posts and I just ignore them.
And BTW, I have to hate you just on principle Spanca, lawyers are the devil
