I have a D2C modded PAL wii, and I just purchased Super Smash Brothers Brawl, original Duel Layer DVD game.
When I insert it, it is unable to read the duel layer disk, and says disk error, without even seeing the SSBB logo.
The disk chuggs in the drive, and won't load, whether I put the wii on its side, or reinsert the disk 30 times and resetting it.
I have the GDR 8163b burner in my computer, which backs up any wii game I have, yet won't back up my SSBB, and won't even read the disk.
Is this a problem with the D2C chip, or is my disk broken?
Should my GDR 8163b drive and Rawdump 2.0 be able to pick up the SSBB game disk in its drive?
Is anyone else having this problem?
[/u]

Is the problem just caused because you can't update the Wii?
Maybe there is a work around - but I'm not sure of what it would involve...

EDIT: Have a look at this.

It's for an NTSC WiiKey and NTSC game - but its basically the same situation.
It's still dangerous though - so use at your own risk.

Apparently you can corrupt the WiiKey so it wont work temporarily.

Maybe try something like that.

Unfortunately the D2C chip is extremely different to the Wiikey, it doesn't have firmware updates as yet, so I can't update it.

if you bought the PAL version of SSBB, it should work regardless of the modchip.

^ Pre-Brawl, WiiFit and Mario Kart Wii games are single layer discs - so those games
have updates on them to allow double layer. Since Modded console owners can't
update to allow the double layer - it makes the process really annoying.

@TS Yeah, sorry that's about all I've got on the subject.
Maybe try contacting the D2C people's and asking them whats up?

EDIT:
@ han83:Ah, cool. Shows how much I know then. icon_cool.gif Assumption made an ass out of me.

not true, i'm a Wiikey owner, and the US copy of Brawl works fine for me. i've already updated off the disc.

but as i was saying if the TC did buy a original PAL copy, since she has a PAL Wii the game should work fine and prompt for a update. if its a burned copy then dunno.

Jesus christ, I've said about six times that it's an ORIGINAL COPY.
I PURCHASED IT FROM THE STORE.
1. I have a PAL wii.
2. I have a PAL ORIGINAL SSBB.

^ No need to get angry - they're just trying to help.

Have you tried contacting the D2C people? That'd be my first step.

It could also be the 'dirty lens' scenario I've heard about...

It's not just the problem with reading dual layer is it?
A lot of people overseas have had to send their consoles in for the disc drive to be fixed/updated, since they've found the original drives often have a lot of difficulty reading dual layer discs. A lot of people have also been having problems with the PAL version of brawl.

If the Dirty Lens scenario is correct, I'd doubt they'd clean the lens because of the chip inside it.

^ That's why I suggested corrupting the chip like the person in that first article.
But apparently you can't do that with the D2C so... blah...

I've had a bit of a problem with my own copy of Brawl as well. I've never done anything in the slightest to mod my Wii or used a Freeloader, yet now more often than not the game will not load and an error message will come up telling me to eject the disc and turn it off. Resetting will usually fix the problem though. If that doesn't work I put in another disc and then exit and pop Brawl back in again it works fine.

We've been issued an official memo from nintendo regarding the 'dirty lens' scenario. In short if your machine is having issues reading the dual layer disc then the customer is advised to ring Nintendo Australia, the discs are not faulty or to blame in this scenario.

Pretty much the word coming down from nintendo - they expect enough to launch a memo to us at JB and im sure other games retailers.

Best of luck!

I haven't done it, because apparently if you send it away they disable your wiichip or mess with it with this software that won't let it work anymore.
I just can't seem to find anyone else with a D2C chip and SSBB. icon_sad.gif
