I love MGS, I played MGS 1 on PS1 and Sons Of liberty on the PS2, I missed Snake Eater entirely....If I just play MGS4 will I have missed anything important without giving away spoilers?
Still the PS3 is very expensive, might have to wait a couple of years and then divulge back into MGS and GoW becasue GoW 1 and 2 were fucking brillant....

i heard rumour that if you tranq' one of the FROGs while their on the wall, they die when they hit the ground. so it counts as a kill.

I'm up to the boss in act 3, I forget what she is called... It's the beauty and the beast thingy, and it is hard to kill. Any tips on it?
I found that the best way to win this fight is to drag it out for a bit and to remember to heal yourself a lot. Shoot at Raging Raven as much as you can when you have a clear shot and when you start getting shot at or are hurt heal yourself by lying right down in the stairwell. Usually if you're fully cloaked neither Raven or the drones will hurt you.
I finished playing this on Tuesday and I must say that it was superb, from the opening to that very epic and unexpected ending. Not only was this a truly great game but with the way the plot panned out I found myself being constantly surprised. I loved the section where you had to go around in a trenchcoat, it felt like a great homage to the really old-fashioned hardboiled espionage thrillers of yesteryear. I really enjoyed each of the boss fights as well and loved how varied the strategies and indeed the environments themselves were.
I think what surprised me the most was that Snake actually survived by the end. When he was crawling on his hands and knees through the microwave-filled hallway, I really thought that they might end it right there-the music and the split-screen with all of his comrades combating impossible odds really made me think that the game was going to end on a big downer-at the very least I thought that Snake was going to die after making it through the hall-for a moment I thought that his own flesh was peeling from his body until I realized that it was his suit!
I was also surprised and pleased to see Naomi's redemption. Going through the game and her questionable actions I really started to hate her for being such a turncoat so to see her playing a big part in saving the day was quite the nice twist.
After that I thought that Snake was going to die in his final fight with Liquid Ocelot but still he persevered and defeated him and we even got one last hand gesture before he too shuffled off his mortal coil
All of that being said, I don't think that anything could have prepared me for the events of the epilogue. While I thought that Snake might end his life and wasn't completely surprised at what appeared to happen, I didn't think that anybody would stop him and for that someone to be none other than Big Boss himself was one of the most shocking and epic moments that I have ever experienced in a game. I was taken aback already when I thought that we had seen his body but to see him in person was amazing. If that wasn't enough, to see Big Boss embrace Snake completely blew my mind. I truly thought that the two were going to come to blows, so to see him tell Snake to lay down his arms and live his life was a very moving moment. It was great to finally flesh out the Patriots stuff and to see that the legacy of The Boss and its misinterpretation played a part in the story. Seeing Big Boss redeem himself and make peace with Snake was very touching, especially his very final moments with the cigar and his last words. Given that the whole series is built on recurring events and legacies, it was neat to see Big Boss finally "get" what The Boss was trying to teach him and to finally give Snake the choice to live for himself rather than as a cog in the war machine that he was created to be. I don' t think I could have asked for a better or more unexpected ending, at least as far as the specifics went. I didn't think that there would be any semblance of a happy ending at all.
And Snake will spend his last days with Otacon and Sunny, having finally given up smoking at long last, good for him Take a well-earned rest Snake-or David, rather, and thanks for the memories.
By the way, does anyone know if there is a cutscene viewer in the game, beyond the Mission Briefings that you can watch from the main menu? I want to try and show my brother the ending and would rather do it through the PS3 rather than from a youtube upload. _________________

^I don't think there'd be a Custscene viewer, notice how for every act we gotta install for 3 minutes, with the installation are the cutscenes, so I don't think its doable, unless if you had the corresponding act installed with a cutscene which you could view (if you get what i mean :S) _________________ xfire = andylulz

I never owned MGS2, but I loved playing with the cutscene viewer at my friend's place. Of particular enjoyment, was replacing Vamp with the Old Lady character model, and watching her hiss and talk in his voice.

Question guys, can the Rage, crying, scream, and laugh bullets cause a kill to be had? ie I shot a guy with a rage bullet and then he killed someone else?
I absolutely LOVED the cutscene after you kill Raging Raven, it is so epic! Liquid just taking out a whole army with nothing but his hands, I love it. They need a damn cutscene viewer, I wanna watch all the cutscenes in a row.

I finished it on the weekend on normal coming in at 18.5 hours. I didn't rush and took my time. Bit short considering it took me 25-30 hours to finish Snake Eater.
I don't know what to think. The game is fantastic and was really well done. The story was fine, but I'm not sure if I'm happy with the way it all ended up. It's all very Saturday morning cartoons. Everybody seemed to live if it's convenient to the story. I mean Big Boss coming back looking like a new man? Come on, if he was alive after Metal Gear 2, there is no way he would have waited until now to show up. Wasnt' a fan of that at all. Hideo really should not have been so soft.
The game-play/cut scenes was a bit of an issue here. Not because of the length of the cutscnes but because of the lack of game. I think they could of had at least another 5 hours worth of gaming here. Chapter 3 was incredible small and the last chapter feel completely flat (compared with Snake Eater). What was here was amazing but I didn't feel there was enough of it. I was also annoyed that you could only call Otacon and Rose. That's it. MGS games are all about the codec and that was something I really missed. I hated the fact you had to take each call as well.
The boss battles probably were the low point of the game. I didn't like the BB at all and hated the scene after you defeated each one. They were pretty much just recycled ideas from the previous games (yes I'm aware that was the idea behind each one). I didn't struggle on any boss which is a first for a Metal Gear game. I normally always get stuck on at least one. In fact the game was too easy. I normally have to be way more careful on 'normal' on the first play through.
As a package and experience the game is amazing and one of the highlights of the year. As a game itself, it's certainly a bit lacking and I came away a bit disappointed.
Certainly not a 10 game either. I'd give it a solid 9. _________________ Shin J Leon.

could that be it?
no, kills refers to direct kills, so hitting someone with a rage dart and watching him going on a kill spree doesn't count towards your kills, also tranqing FROGS while they're on the wall also doesn't count as I've done it several times in the bit with Rat Patrol 1 and finished the act with 0 kills, you might have killed someone before the last checkpoint of act 2 perhaps?

Just to clear that up: Big Boss after the incident at Zanzibarland was technically 'killed', same as Frank Jaeger, however the Patriots secretly took both their bodies, Frank going into experiments and such, and Big Boss being concealed and kept as a Biomort.
As Liquid and Solidus were killed off, Ocelot and EVA rebuilt Big Bosses body with parts from Liquid and Solidus, but this doesn't mean he was taken out of his coma by the Patriot AI. The nanomachines were only surpressed after the destruction of the AI system in Act 5, and that's why he made a return right at the end. Subconsciously he was still alive so he was already aware of what had happened due to Naomi, Ocelot before his doppelganger sacrifice and EVA telling him.
And also, for the eagle eyed fans, you'd notice in Act 3 that the entire time it was clearly evident that the biomort was Solidus, as Big Boss lost his right eye, not his left
I'm currently on my fourth playthrough, no alerts, no kills, no continues, no items used. On Solid Normal.

Possible, as there are soldiers in Biomech suits that are commonly mistaken for a form of Gekko. This is the Drebin chase. _________________

On a side note, the hardcover guide arrived from Play-Asia today and its a really nice piece of work. I haven't had a chance to thoroughly go through it yet but it looks to be a really good guide, not only to the game but to the plot as well. About 12-14 pages are dedicated to analysing the plot and characters, and beyond that is a nice section of Yoji Shinakawa's art.

Does anyone here know if playing on The Boss Extreme takes away a lot of ammunition types? I'm playing under this difficulty now and going into Drebin's shop I've noticed that a lot of the non-lethal rounds have disappeared. Is this just because of the difficulty or can they appear in later acts? _________________
^ What are you scoring (items) on your additional playthroughs? Does it unlock anything in MGO?
Man, this games needs achievements.
An absolute tonne of stuff. I've got facecamos for all the Battle Beauties, facecamo of Otacon, Colonel Campbell, Raiden with visor closed and open, a couple of disguises, some new weapons..there's an enormous amount of hidden stuff, half I can't even remember!

It's part of the difficulty, all non-lethal ammunition cannot be bought. My last playthrough was on Boss extreme. _________________

I loved young Ocelot in MGS3, he was cool. So I liked that part in MGS4 when it was revealed Ocelot had sacrifised himself. So Ocelot was a good guy all along.
In all honesty, although the MGS cutscenes are long, overall the story is not that hard to understand. Putting on the subtiles helps a lot as well.
Just finished it tonight, and I loved it. I really thought Snake killed himself, and was surprised to see Big Boss still alive. I wish there would be another Metal Gear Solid game, as I love this game. Gonna play through again on the second last difficulty.

Yes, but nothing outside of the singleplayer yeah? It would be good if you could use those face camos in the MP.
I wish when you clocked the game it had a mission based mode where you could do the missions ala Devil May Cry. _________________ Shin J Leon.
Just clocked it then. Absolutely epic. Damn the whole story confuses me though, I get so lost in it.
I actually thought Old Snake was the same Snake from Snake Eater. When Big Mama came into the story and was like 'I'm your mother' I freaked out. I was like 'Didn't he hook up with her in MGS3?'

^It's speculated that they were former lovers before the events of Operation Snake Eater, however that's pretty much untrue. Big Boss/Naked Snake saw her as a mother more than anything. They had developed CQC together and fought together in numerous operations.
The Boss is the mother of Ocelot (Adam/Adamska) and his father is The Sorrow.
EDIT: EVA and Big Boss did have some form of romance yes. _________________

^Big Mama =/= The Boss
I think you got confused there, buddy. lol
Big Boss and EVA (Big Mama) were close, but then she betrayed him. Later on after forming the Patriots, they must've 'hooked up' again. And plus, she gave birth to his 'children', so she still had feelings for him.
