And yes, the motive for this thread is (Edit)not that I can get my homework done.
I've got an assignment on people that inspire you, and I have to choose someone, but, lo and behold, my petty mind refuses to come forth with the proverbial goods.
Inspirational in this case meaning altruistic, self-sacrificing and/or relating to the concept of selfless service to the community. Give me people! (Preferably famous ones who I'd know, not personal ones).
Anyway, this doesn't all have to be about my homework. Tell us people that inspire you, (personal ones in this case are fine) people that you really look up to. Reasons of why you admire them so would also be good, so we don't get random names of people we've never heard of.
Try to keep it to people who have actually done good things for the world, or excel at something, really excel. Not just, such and such a footballer cus he scored 10 times in a game or something.
And do it quickly, because this is due on Friday! _________________

John Lennon (and the Beatles) inspire me through music.
Roald Dahl and many of his fictional characters inspire me. In fact it's funny that I'm inspired by so many fictional characters. The narrator from Fight Club for example.
And I know you said not footballers, but Darren Lockyer (and other maroons) inspire me to never give up. _________________

So this forum's become a place where you can get others do to your homework? OUTSTANDING!
Hmm.. what about Fred Hollows.
Here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Hollows
Gee how easy is it these days to do school projects - just wiki it. Back in my day we had to borrow books at the local library - i had to get mum to drive me there. And borrowing books at school was a pain cause you had to be quick otherwise someone else would have borrowed it. _________________

Found someone worth looking up to.
William Wilberforce.
He was the main drive behind the abolition of the slave trade in Britain. Despite worsening health, huge opposition, and repeated rejections of his bill for abolition by the British government he managed to finally destroy the British slave trade.
Well, maybe not get others to do my homework, just get ideas to get my homework done. Anyway, now that my homework is done, the main motive of this thread can be changed to hearing about people who inspire you.
So there you go. Nice new sig by the way arbok.
And Qbert, footballers inspiring you to never give up is fine, I was talking about being an idiotic fan like
"[Insert randoms name here] inspires me cus he is awesome at stuff. And I wanna do stuff like that cus it is good." _________________

Hey Vae, Just an idea, usually when i do essays on things like this i tend to pick people that i am really familiar with, cuz although william wilberforce is the centre of a very inspiring story, He hasnt really insipred you to do anything
And Q*bert its not weird at all that you are inspired by fictional characters, so am i as even though they are not real, set in a real life story would be very inspiring.
When i look at the world inspiring i generally think something that has compelled me to take part or do something i wouldnt normally do, and whilst people such as Nelson Mandella and William Wilberforce, even Fred Hollows, have all done such amazing things, their stories have never really made me want to get up and help free the slaves or help the blind...
Inspiration in terms of myself? Chuck Wepner... Bassically he was a boxer, relatively unkown in terms of the boxing world compared to the stars of the day etc : muhhamed ali. However he went into a title fight against muhhamed, and went through all 15 rounds, fighting through getting his nose broken and being severely cut several times. Although im no boxer But he is a great example of facing diversity on a large scale, and instead of taking the easy way out, persevering, in term that idea in general i apply to both school stuff and rugby/tennis etc.

Viggo Mortensen.
Seems like everything he does, he does with passion.

did you see Eastern Promises (i missed it but I definitely want to watch it sometime) - apparently you get to see him roll around naked for about 10 minutes in a Turkish Bathhouse fighting off crims. _________________

Mark Brooks artwork encouraged me to work a lot harder on my art and one day actually go work for Marvel. artists like him that post on deviant art and give tips and encouragements are awesome (Cat Staggs aka Gattadonna is also pretty amazing) ^____^
this is Mark's DA account if anyone is interested in taking a peek =)
Tolkien. the world he made seem so real is somewhat comforting in a way... as umm, yea, i live in a fantasy world ^^;;;
it's just, his works are so real, it's like they're history, totally amazing to be able to create something like that. who knows, maybe he knew a tad more than he was letting on?
he inspires me to keep imagining and believing in what society does not really accept adults to be interested in. _________________

At my last school, when I had to do assignments like this, a lot of people picked Jesus. If you believe in him, then I guess he would be the most inspirational person there is?

Wander from Shadow of the Colossus, and Naked Snake aka Big Boss from MGS3: Snake Eater.
...
Well, one took down 16 freaking giants with just a sword and bow for a girl, and the other was shot in the eye and still waltzed through his mission. That's a hell of a lot of inspiration to do just an essay or most things in general, because you at least don't have to kill giants or get shot in the eye.
In terms of REAL people though, Dream Theater in general inspire me. _________________

my inspirations in life are:
jello biafra: ex lead singer of the dead kennedies, a guy who is close to broke but stuck to his guns despite being totally ripped off by his band and never selling out.
henry rollins: his thoughts on life and take on everyday life have been an inspiration through his spoken word albums sine i was first in highschool. he has been speaking on cd since 87 and has not let up since.
david attenborough: just an outright inspiration for the work he has done and the love of animals that i share.
terry pratchett: as an author he has astounded me with the evolution of his writing series from an informed comedic fantasy writer that has branched into quantum physics and time/space theories that become incorporated into novels containing all the beloved characters from previous novels. discworld is the be all and end all of novels as far as im concerned.. _________________

What a coincidence, I had to do something in class just today (to be finished by next lesson, which is in two weeks) on someone who inspires me. Sorry though, I can't be of much help, I chose my school captain. Just thought it intersting that we're both doing pretty much the same thing.
Although, someone inspirational AND famous is Mother Theresa _________________
