Analysts predict Wii will flop.

Analysts predict PS3 will sell 100 million.

Analysts predict GTA will bomb.

Analysts predict the Wii will stop selling by 2008.

Analysts predict the PS3 will be the top selling console in 2008.

I predict that you can never trust what an analyst predicts.

Although they exaggerate things a bit, I do think 360 could loose to PS3. Unless Microsoft really push themselves and manage to get a larger audience Sony will probably beat them eventually, even if they continue to screw up as often as they always do. The reason being its Sony (like nik says) and its got blu-ray (the main reason). Alternatively though they could shove a blu-ray player in the 360, then it would do quite well. Or HD-DVD could have just done well to start with and blu-ray lost instead, then Sony would suffer very badly. I don't really think though that the 360 will loose by a large margin if any at all, I still think if Microsoft play their cards right they can be winning in a few more years time, and in the end too depending on the price of stand alone blu-ray players vs PS3. Also I don't think any console stands a chance of seriously "loosing" by a large margin or anything though and this is going to be the closest console war to date.

EDIT: Removed random bracket

The PS3 will definitely trump the 360 eventually in global sales, but Microsoft will win the North American region (minus Wii). Also again, considering last generation, Microsoft will have closed the gap by a ridiculous number of units.

I don't get how consumers could choose a PS3 over a 360 because the 360 is an 'adult/teenager' console.. what titles exactly does the PS3 have that make it kid/casual friendly? Really, I think the Wii has stolen a lot of the casual PS2 audience from last gen while the 360 stole a lot of the hardcore PS2 audience.

I think me and my girlfriend are gonna get a 360, especially for its shooters... we wanna play those co-op games like halo 3, army of two, and of course Gears of War... Despite her being a hardcore nintendo fan and me always being a playstation [1 & 2] guy... this generation of gaming seems like we aren't gonna get the Wii or PS3... and being now over 18 we think we're heading for the demographic the 360 seems to be attracting these days... ah well... still i would love to try out 'Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction' and she really badly wanted Mario Galaxy... but both of us want what 360 offers... sorry if im going around in circles... but i think you get what im trying to say...

Ah well

If we listened to analysts we'd never buy anything. Fundamentally 360 need to get over the bad rep they've given themselves by releasing a product with such high failure rates. It's the new ice breaker at parties cause everyone knows someone who has had a 360 fail.
Secondly they need to target advertise much better for new groups of gamers. Wii does this fantastically well. They need to do this with out upsetting the installed gamer base.
I wonder if at the time of release someone offered 360 19 million in consoles sales after 3 years whether they'd take it. I would like to know what their unbiased opinion of their performance is to date. Has it been successful or not.

off topic, but maybe thats the point, i think maybe the world needs to curb its spending to fight high prices (inflation, petrol etc), but people are still spending spending spending

Being an analyst must be fun.

Sit around making wild and baseless accusations that turn the internet into a veritable mindfield of flame wars, then sit back and watch the carnage icon_cool.gif

Before I saw those numbers, I thought that all of the installed bases were relatively the same, but obviously not. Even though it looks like there will be a clear "winner" this generation, I think every console will make their mark (better than the 100/21/19 of last gen).

YEP - thats why i havn't brought one, and will upgrade to PS3 (which im delaying becasue there just aren't the games there, loss of backwards compatibility, and i don't intend on getting a plasma in the next 18 months)

They do need a consumer level add-on. Sony has pretty much won with blue-ray as its selling point. I suggest that msoft would do well to include a HD tuner. Many consumers havn't upgraded TVs and as free-to-air goes digital only there will be demand for set-top boxes, a niche the xbox could nicely fill....

The analysts quoted in this article aren't making baseless accusations. These are reasonable calls. I don't argue with opinion and perception that 360 is not casual friendly. Under the numerous blankets of violent games are a few (exclusive) casual games, so people can be forgiven for thinking it's all kill kill kill on the 360.

It's a marketing problem. One of the 360's biggest drawcards is its Live Arcade range, which is perfect for the casual audience. Yet, it's hardly marketed. Hardly anyone outside the Xbox live playing hardcore audience knows about it. They have to get that out there, it'll help to partially counter this image of hardcore. Then they need a hit casual franchises, with similar popularity to the Singstar brand.

Both would have been nice things to have from the beginning, and they might have been included had the console been not so rushed. Also HD-DVD is dead now, they don't even sell the 360 add on anymore.

They seemed to be mainly talking about Europe, and they've got a point.

Microsoft has really struggled in mainland Europe.

the 360 is all about fps, and thats what seems to be driving the console, i just dont see many 360 games that arent fps, thats not to say there arent exceptions, there are alot od 360 games that arent fps but the consoles image is that of an fps console. This image alone could kill the 360, an image of kiddy games killed the cube last gen and being an owner of a cube i know that it wasnt only kiddy games.
Image can kill a console, albeit the fps image is nowhere near as damaging as the kiddy games image...

As always, I agree with you Passa.

PS3 will out the 360 in lifetime sales but this generation is a win for Microsoft already. If they could match the PS3, which they have done, it leaves them poised to take the next-next generation by storm.

How can anyone claim that any console is going to 'win' or be in a better position or worse position than last generation this early in the console life cycle???, Wii being the exception. How quickly people forget that the PS2 cost around $700 on its release here in Aussie and it didn't really start moving units till it hit sub $400.

I think the generation might be on the verge of being over by the time the PS3 hits $399. That or Microsoft will delay the next console until Sony's ready and have heaps of AAA launch titles to flood out Sony.

I think what the analysts are saying here is not that Microsoft necessarily needs more sales, but that they need to find a way to start making money off their sales. I can't be bothered going in to pull out some statistics right now but I believe Microsoft have plunged millions into their gaming division yet they're still not making money out of it.

Yeah, I read about that too. Also, their provision for RROD doesn't help them either. They've got heaps of capital though. I don't believe they made a profit out of Xbox, and since they haven't so far, it really shows their commitment to the console scene. I hope they stick in it. The competition will be good for everyone concerned.

Yeah thats right, I think they have yet to make any money out of the Xbox brand, but I believe they looks at the profitability over a 10-15~ year range rather than each individual generation of console.

I fail to care anymore about the sales of a console anymore, Gamecube was my favourite console last generation and as long as there are a select few games on the 360 (Well there are way more than a few) that I will happily play satisfied I don't care how poorly the sales for the console are.

Only when the sales tend to affect what games are coming to a particular console is when I get annoyed, GTA would of been so awesome on the GCN. I think the GCN's controller would of worked so well like it does with many other games.

I think it good that we have all 3 platforms selling a good amount of units. All the companies involved have really broughy gaming to the forefront of the entertainment industry, stamping an authority that gaming can be a medium of art. We need all 3 companies for the future to continue the success that gaming has had. It got nowhere when we had 2 companies battling against each other whether is colecovision/atari, sega/nintendo, nintendo/sony, gaming was never really considered a profitable entertainment format, now the M$/Sony and Nintendo, gaming is in the best position it has ever been
