My youngest brother was playing Mortal Kombat when he was six. Then again, my family had a history of letting us watch a bit of the old ultraviolence. I saw Aliens when I was five, Robocop when I was six or seven - both when they were new on video.
The first violent game you played and when you played it is an interesting counter-thread idea though, but we really shouldn't derail this one with it. _________________

The first game I ever purchased from my own money was Days of Thunder on the Nintendo Entertainment System. I remember having to put it on layby and pay it off from money earned as a paperboy. _________________ RIP Buddha 19/10/1952 - 03/01/2004

Pajama Sam in No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside
After playing that game I actually took my glow in the dark yo-yo (closest thing I had to a torch) into my wardrobe to see if here was another world in there
But in all honesty, I was actually secretly jealous of Passa because he had all the putt-putt games _________________

Kingdom Hearts.
*Really* good question, because it appears that up until 2005 (when I actually bought KH, late to the party, I know) every game had been purchased for me by someone else )

Metal Gear Solid - PS1
skived the day from school knew nothing about the game just hanging around the shops and had seen the nice looking artwork outside my local indy game shop and decided to pickup a copy, what a treat i was in for it kept me entertained for months progressing through each setting. i had lot of games before but they were either bought by my parents or traded other games to get them.

Before I got a job I don't think I bought many games at all. Since I didn't get pocket money I would just ask for a game every couple of months or so, and, if the parents were feeling generous, they'd cave.
I have a feeling that I did buy Network Q RAC Rally Championship with my own money (that I got for my birthday or Christmas or something) back in '97. That was a fantastic game and it spent many hours on my machine. The game was really ahead of its time when it came out in 1996.
The first console I actually bought with my own money and wasn't a Christmas present or whatever was actually a Wii. My first ever console was a SNES that I got for Christmas the year after the 64 came out, so it was at a rock-bottom price (though this was balanced out by the fact that the games cost more than the console).

the first game i ever bought myself? hhmm
i think it was street fighter on the dreamcast...hmm wait no further back was mario kart on the snes (?) wow this is a hard question.....ahh was snatcher on the megacd...thats right cause that was during my first job i ever had and bought the megadrive/32x/megacd combo in 1 go from a nongaming friend that i worked with. yes and that is still 1 of my favorite story lines in a game...for those that never played it, it was like terminator meets invasion of the body snatchers.
also i do remember that the first 2 games i ever got was adventure on the woodgrain atari and voodoo castle on the vic20 when i was around 4 years old...both of which are still 2 of my top 20 alltime favorites _________________

I acutally remember the first game i bought for myself now. It was star wars episode 1: pod racer and it was acutally the best game of all time, period. It was the game where if you reversed, then started going forward, you were already on your second lap for passing go

I can't quite remember exactly what it would have been, though it was probably something for the Gameboy-Baseball or maybe Pokemon Red or Donkey Kong Land. It may have also been Donkey Kong Country 2, which I definitely remember buying with my own money. Of course there were games that I played before those but they were bought for me rather than by me. _________________

First game would have been International Soccer on the C64 (yes, not a typo, and not N64), unless you count the Game&Watch games from Nintendo.
Yeah, IS rocked on the C64. Especially when you had to load it from a tape and took 30mins to boot, and it wasn't even guaranteed that it would boot correctly after 30mins!

Well I don't recall actually paying for any of my SNES games so it was probably Super Mario 64 or something... _________________ Sell me Mega Drive and Super Nintendo games.

Lol, I had road runner and coyote on tape and spent hours trying to get it to start. I never did play it, but I had it.

Street Fighter 2 : Special Champion Edition, on Mega Drive.
I was probably 10 at the time, and made it very clear that I wanted this game. But the parents weren't interested in paying. Mostly because they argued it was more financially sensible to rent games. After the hundred-odd Master System games I'd rented, I'd mostly agree, but I knew this one was worth it.
So I saved my $99.95, but my parents set the ultimatum that they'd not rent me another game until the equivalent game rental period of $99.95 worth had elapsed. Some 6 months later "ha-do-ken" was still being heard daily from the living room. Worth every cent
