It's called exercise, fatties.

You trolled A-N and got banned. Haven't you learnt a thing?

Recently i've take up Martial Arts and Walking, and on top of that, i'll be going to the gym from June for a weekly workout, which should be fun. icon_razz.gif I need to improve my muscle structure. I've been nothing but skin, bones and some fat throw in for all of my life.

Martial Arts, whether it be Judo Karate or whatever is one of the best things you can do not just to lose weight but to just get fit and stronger.

It teaches you how to defend yourself or a lady/man you're trying to impress icon_wink.gif and it requires a lot of energy therefore burning off a lot of calories.

Haha, I thought I might get this kind of reaction. icon_lol.gif As for how tall I am, I'm around 170cm. I don't know if you'd call me seriously underweight, but yeah, I could stand to gain some. My weight hasn't really changed since I was much younger, and it's been partially attributed to me having Coeliac Disease, I was only diagnosed with it when I was 13 and my body hadn't been getting all the nutrition it needed up until that point, I wasn't growing much. I've grown quite a bit in height since then, but my weight never really followed suit, no matter how much I eat/ate. I sometimes gain a kilo or two, but always lose them.

There are just SO many parents out there who don't fully understand or know of good nutritional habits,

What's interesting is the Body Mass Index, the system that's used to determined what body you are (underweight, overweight, obese etc) was created between 1830 and 1850. Now ever since then the nutritional value of food has changed countless times, yet we still use this system designed almost 200 years ago...

According to the BMI I am obese. I am not obese. I am over weight, but I am far from obese. If I was to get to my target weight according to the BMI, I would be incredibly underweight (I know, because I had a friend, same height as me, and he was at my 'target weight' and was sick because of it)

But that's my personal gripe with the system used.

Now, weight is a problem. As I said I am overweight. I have been for a long time. The downside to being over weight and exercising is you injure yourself quite easily compared to other people. I can't run, because I get shin splints. The only thing I can do is swim. Ever seen a fat person at a pool? We don't get along very well. We're afraid of what people think of us. We are embarrassed to go out because people will judge us.

Going for a walk is a start, but it's not going to do much. In order to lose weight you need to get your pulse going and a constant rate. A walk very rarely does that.

I kinda forgot what point I was getting at there but for those tl;dr

Being overweight is bad, getting on track is hard and embarrassing work and if you're not careful you can seriously injure yourself, but it's good for you in the long run.

(for what it's worth, I'm pretty active, I play, or should say played until my injure, soccer in a league, so that's two lots of two hour work, plus everything else I do in the middle, 30 minute walk into the city and back out etc)

One of the bigger problems would be smoking for me, giving that up I believe would definitely increase my chances/speed at reducing weight.

You might find you'd put on weight if you stopped smoking, atleast for the first 3 - 6 months, but once you get past that stage, you'll be fine.

I believe walking at least 20 minute does help to lose weight, slowly, til a point. I have a very uber lazy lifestyle, most of the time I sit at home doing homework, or at uni sitting to do a lecture/tutorial/practical (its not like I want to be an idiot doing exercise during a lecture, lol). This is a challenge I have to face taking the programming path in the future.

My form of exercise, which involves walking to uni (which takes 20 min) and back or going out and shop with friends or family. Changing eating habits (eat the same amount but lower fat, healthier, yet tasty food, no desserts after dinner, 3 little meal and a big dinner, no chocolates/lollies) and not drinking soft drink will help. Sports? Meh. Didn't need sport to be active icon_biggrin.gif

Edit - I'm currently on medication that screws up my appetite and because of it, I gained 7kg. Sucks I know, but I rather be fat then have a constant strong headache.

All that is great. Walking when you can is good, it's not like it's going to do harm. So instead of catching that tram or bus, you can walk a bit more. When I caught public transport to work, I walked to the station, then from the station to work.

I find sitting on me behind at work infront of a computer doesn't really help things...so I keep a bottle of water with me, which I drink a fair bit of during the day.

Hmm I dont really think the BMI system is that bad at all. My BMI is like 20-21 and that is fairly good. In my year the average is around 20-22 with the highest being 26 and the lowest being around 13. Although the BMI system isnt perfect it gives you and indicitation of target weights etc, however it varies for some people eg: people with more muscle than others etc eg: really really built tank guy in my year with hardly any fat is about 24 BMI whilst the 13 guy has like no muscle at all and is literally skin and bones, he may be 14 or 15 bmi now not sure, but all in all the system isnt TOO bad, just has a few flaws I guess. Out of interest lapzod what is your BMI? because our teacher said >30 was obese?>

BMI is useless the only accurate way to test if you are obese is a body fat % test.

Yeah I've been having really similar problems lately as well... as you know admeister, I'm gluten intolerant, and for some reason this makes my weight yoyo around. During year 12 I was above 55kg. Sometimes I can keep it at a steady 54 kg or so which is good for my height, but lately it's dropped below 50kg and I'm looking pretty yuck. I look like I have an eating disorder. And no matter how much I eat I can't seem to put it back on! I've been eating twice as much for meals as the rest of my family.

^ That's pretty interesting. Seems like it's a fairly common side affect then, which sucks. Not much we can do really, all we can do is eat properly, our body does the rest. Ah well.

Have you ever considered that you may have a food intolerance? That sounds soooo much like me right before I was diagnosed with gluten intolerance. I stopped having gluten and after a few months I could get back to a normal weight.

I'm not fat, infact I am 2kg under average weight. I INFACT DO RUNNING., I just don't eat that much. Sports and Fitness teacher tells me I have great stamina though for running.
Anyway I have got my whole family telling me and my cousin (who weighs a little bit more than me and he is the same age) that we should actually get a little bit fatter. His doctor also told him that too...and we are only like 57kg-63kg (both 15) and thats normal for 15 year olds to weigh that much.

Back to the topic I voted for the last option. Its their own fault for being fat, they have to get back to being normal by exercise and being healthy or they can stay the same.

B3NBO, there might be a reason why you have no motivation, fatigue and (I'm guessing) stuff like poor concentration as well. You don't need to be even slightly overweight to need exercise (I'm about 50kg/168cm, yes nik I grew massively over the Christmas holidays, you can no longer call me a dwarf icon_nn.gif).

I usually suffer from fatigue, complete lack of motivation and concentration as well as depression. I can pinpoint where I started feeling this way - about the time I stopped playing competitive sports (my only form of physical activity). I used to do 2x 2h training sessions plus a weekend game for soccer and was capable of bike riding about 40k, nowadays I do nothing (and this has never bothered me since I don't have a weight problem). Research however shows there is a direct correlation between exercise and your happiness (just Google it, there's plenty of articles online).

I don't exercise nearly as often as I should still - but when I do, I'm much happier and am able to concentrate for longer than five minutes. To those trying to get out there and actually start exercising, just load up an MP3 player with all your favourite tracks, put the volume up high and start walking/jogging (whatever you find more comfortable). Personally, I set out at about 5.30pm (right after sunset) and take the dog with me, it's nice and quiet around that time and the chilly evening air is rather refreshing.

Massive respect to those like Itachi and TheAnswer actually doing something about their weight problem. I voted the last option, unless there is a medical condition causing the weight gain (perhaps just a slow metabolism), then it is the individual's responsibility to step up and actually start doing something for themselves.

Good luck to those of you who are actually putting the effort in, keep us updated on how it's going icon_smile.gif
