Hi, was wondering if anyone here can help me out with something. I just recently bought a ps3 and have two games: assassins creed and sonic the hedghog.
When I went to play them both, I noticed that both games are displayed in a letterbox format (with the black bars at the top and bottom).
I'm, playing on a normal fairly old tv, it's not a HD tv or anything and I was wondering if this is just the normal way these games are supposed to play, or is there a way to make it so that they display in full screen.
I would appreciate any help in this.

Though I can't say 100% for the PS3, I know that most Xbox 360 games only play in widescreen and thus result in a letterboxed image on a square television.
I would be pretty certain its the same deal here, and there's nothing you can do. Sorry :\ _________________

Thanks for the response. I'ts probably the same for the PS3, I'll just have to make do 'till I get myself a HDTV. Just wanted to be sure. Much appreciated.

I used to run my ps3 on an old tube tv, and i'm pretty sure it wasn't letterboxed. Try going through the display settings again.

yeh im not sure either but just go into the game and see if there is an option maybe for it? also i doubt this will work but worth a try i think somewhere in settings in the cross media bar there is something about screen type for 4:3 tvs either letterbox or pan &scan but it says for dvds but no harm in trying _________________

I've been through the ps3 display settings, and there's no option in the actual game itself. I guess thats just the way it displays on a standard tv? I don't know...

What you're looking for is 576i/p in 4:3 - make sure your display settings reflect this. Alternatively hold down the I/O button when the console is in standby - this reverts the PS3 to default display (576i in 4:3). _________________

Some games play full screen, others play with the bars. For example, The Darkness and Uncharted have the bars, but Resistance and Motorstorm don't. Its just whether or not the game is designed to do so.
