I have a 42" Panasonic Plassie that is displaying, via component cables, 1080i and 720p as its max resolutions.
From the research i have done i am unable to get a clear answer. Some sites say that the blu rays i purchase will be downgraded to 476p; others state that the downscaling will go to the next best available resolution, in my case 720p / 1080i.
Is anyone aware of anything different or updates in the pipeline that could potentially resurrect this problem?
Bottom line is i want the complete planet earth collection on blu ray. I figure if i can't display it at 720p / 1080i via component i am better off getting the DVD. _________________

Wouldn't that come down to the player and not the Bluray itself?
I'll assume you're talking about your PS3. From what I've read, if a panel does not support 1080p, the PS3 will downscale to 1080i.
Then there's something about dropping it to 480p if 1080i isn't selected, but that was from a news post early last year so it's probably fixed by now. If you're panel does support at least 1080i, you should be fine.
I've got my DVD player upscaling to 1080i instead of 720p anyway. It looks better to me. _________________

Yeah i'm using the PS3 with a default resolution of 720p, which i prefer over 1080i.
So it sounds like i will be able to watch BluRays on the PS3 at 1080i / 720p. _________________

Hey doag - I have the planet earth blu-rays and they definitely display at 720p/1080i, and it looks stunning so don't worry. and I also have a 42" panasonic plasma with 1024x768 resolution.
As for the blu-ray player downscaling blu-ray discs - i do recall reading that somewhere, but it doesn't affect us, ive forgotten why, but you can easily notice the difference between HD stuff and non HD stuff. all the blu-rays will come out at 720p or 1080i. (basically what capoeira was saying). _________________

Playstation 3 firmware 1.80 added 720p support.
Downscaled output of Blu-ray Discs is now supported. When 720p is selected as the video output setting of the PS3â„¢ system, Blu-ray Discs that were recorded in 1080p or 1080i resolution can be played in 720p resolution.
That is from playstation.com

Yes 720p support was added a while back. The only limitation over component is you are unable to output @ 1080p.
Another then that you will have no problems.
Shouldn't this be in the Sony forum? _________________ Shin J Leon.

I think what the Doag is talking about is a particular DRM technology unique to Blu-ray.
If the disc has a particular encoding it means that any output that isn't hdcp compliant will only display at 480P. Basically you need HDMI.
At present no current Blu-ray has this encoded. They probably will start to within the next twelve months though. Fingers crossed they don't, but I bet you Sony does. There's been a fair public backlash against these technologies over the last twelve months, so I'm hopeful.
Blue Planet doesn't have the encoding, so you're sweet and always will be with it over component cables.
