Has Dexter started on PayTV here yet?
i saw it advertised in the paper a few weeks back, but i don't know when it was due to start. (i don't have PayTV - so don't really know where to check.)
i got the DVDs sent to me from my sisters who are currently backpacking through the US, and based on what i've seen (the first episode) it looks to be a fantastic series. (until i'm told otherwise, i'll keep this generic.)
it's about a forensic pathologist in the Miami Police department, specialising in blood-splatter analysis and the crimes he solves.
except he's also a Sociopath, and uses his job as both a proxy for his own murderous urges, and as a front to cover himself.
it's all very Patrick Bateman, except rather than killing indiscriminately, he chooses his victims based on whether they deserve it or not. (the blurb says "Mob Assassins and Serial Killers of the Innocent")
although i've only seen one episode, if you have PayTV i recommend checking it out. _________________

Showcase/Showtime 3 on Foxtel?
The channel launches on December 1st. Dexter is supposed to start on the 2nd at... err... 8.30pm? I'm looking forward to it actually. It sounds interesting and different, the sort of stuff I like in TV shows. I also want to watch The Riches. It's about these hillbillies who steal the lives of a dead family. It sounds like cr@p, but the previews show it has promise. _________________

^ ah ok - Thanks Joseph, i didn't want to be breaking one of the rules i'm pretty vocal about, so i'll just leave it at that.
but from what i've seen, it's well worth a look anyway. _________________

Bumped for those with Foxtel.
this starts tonight, if you don't give it a go, you're only doing yourself a disservice. _________________

As someone who's downloaded the show [... via the iTunes store, naturally] for the past year, I have to concur with everything that's been stated, although I probably should have seen and responded to this topic earlier.
So, all I can think of saying to add to the topic is that the show is insanely dark, gets fairly intense later on, and as icing, stars Michael C. Hall (David from Six Feet Under) and several Oz alumni: David Zayas, Lauren Vélez and Erik King.
[Edited for slightly better readability, hopefully]

it's a great series, but i can't really think of anything to compare it to in order to give a recommendation.
it's almost like a cross between American Psycho and The Sopranos in that it's about a sociopath functioning in society. so it has the killer aspect of American Psycho, but the normal aspects of The Sopranos.
it's certainly very different to the normal American cop show.
can't wait for Season 2 to release to DVD.
(i'm also on the verge of ordering the three Dexter novels.) _________________

This show is excellent.
It's definitely the best thing on television at the moment.
I can't wait for season 3. _________________

I was waiting for a box set to be released, it's already out in America I think. It's a really great show, it's different, entertaining and (on occasion) funny. _________________

Wholly disenchanted by the numerous plotholes and other issues with the way the second season ended. Though of course I haven't seen it, I'm clearly just going off sho.com, recaps, and transcripts. But fear not Obs, you'll still think it's fantastic, since it seems such issues don't bother you in Heroes (although I could write a book on the number in that show) and naturally Dexter is far higher quality series and has far less.
And going off Amazon.com reviews, the DVD set seems to suffer from being overly compressed and interlaced. If that's the case, I'd rather get higher quality video for free than pay for an inferior product.

Just a note: No specific details of the second season please, Showcase are airing the first one still. That goes double for spoiling the final episodes. _________________

ObseletE mentioned the first episode was good before it'd aired here, I'm just saying likewise that the last ones are bad. I don't think that's any more of a spoiler than what he said. And really I don't think I could have been more vague.
Edit: What the hell are you ***holes voting down this post for?

My warning wasn't aimed at you, I just felt I should remind people before others mentioned specifics. It only takes one comment about a future episode/season (even if it's as simple as "cool" or "bad") to get people started. _________________

like i said above, my sisters brought the DVDs of Dexter season 1 back from the US with them late last year, so i assume these are the same DVDs Amazon gets. i haven't noticed anything overly bad about the quality, but then:
a) i haven't seen any other source (i don't have Foxtel) so i've nothing to compare it to except other DVDs in my collection.
b) i've either been watching it on an SD-TV, which looks great, or my PC, which looks like any other TV show on DVD.
but if it is true (and there's no reason to doubt the claims), then hopefully Australia gets a better transfer, like we did when The Sopranos came to DVD. _________________

Thanks to this thread, I tracked down a copy of the first season.
I've only watched the first episode so far but it was enough to assure I'd see it through to the end. I love the concept of the series, a serial killer who kills serial killers... I'm sure I've heard of that before but seeing it executed (npi) in this way makes it feel very unique and intriguing.
The character of Dexter himself is genuinely captivating. The idea of a compulsive killer with a conscience is fascinating and great to watch. If I can say this after only watching a single episode, I'm sure he soon fast become one of the more interesting characters to come out of a TV series.
I've also got to give props to the amazing performance of the lead. I think he nailed the subtle sensibilities of a closet killer, and his internal monologues are brilliantly delivered. I really look forward to hearing more of them as it's the only time you really get to delve into his unadulterated psyche.
Like with most shows, I judge whether it's worth investing time in by its pilot episode. Even if it's half decent I may watch a few more episode to see if the quality improves. With Dexter, there's no such qualms. It was one of the better pilots I've seen and really set the stage for some incredibly interesting character based narrative. Looks like I'm in it for the long haul. _________________
