|
|
|
|
I've just picked up a Wii, and it seems that the distance between the couch and the sensor bar is a little bit too far, because when leaning back all comfy-like I get jitter in the pointer. For now I lean forward, and though I could move the couch closer, then I'd be too close to the TV, so that's a no go.
I'm probably about 3 metres away from the sensor bar. I've been looking at two PowerWave sensor bars. One's wireless, the other wired, apparently both have better range, but the wireless even more. Can anyone confirm just how much better the range on these are? I only need maybe another metre of *reliable* sensor range and it will be right.

Make sure you put the bar on it's stand, or have the front edge extending over whatever it's placed on. If you don't it dramatically reduces the range.

Top tip since this is a pre-owned Wii and didn't come with any instructions (nor the stand), so I had no idea. But I've tried propping it up on something akin to the stand and it didn't seem to make much difference.
This feels like a bit of a blunder on Nintendo's half, because I don't think the distance I sit from the TV is at all unreasonable or atypical.

I sit about 3 metres away from my TV and I haven't had any pointer problems. Maybe the room lighting is interfering or something? _________________

If all else fails, I read somewhere that you can use 2 candles instead of the sensor bar. You just set a candle at each end of the top of the TV (if that is where you had the sensor bar) and light them.
Apparently, the light that the flames give out works the same as the infra-red lights on the sensor bar! (or something along those lines)
Not very practical, but interesting to see if it actually works! _________________

Could be. I know at home it works a treat, but at work you can barely stand two meters away from the screen before running into trouble - which is annoying because it's a decent sized TV and you really don't want to be that close. _________________

Perhaps too many sunlight? I don't remember where I read it from but isn't one of the instruction was not to put it in sunlight or something? _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

Interference isn't the issue, it's definitely range. Night / day, lights on / off, no difference. But move a little bit closer and it's happy.
And I'm not using candles / burning objects on top of my TV. I'm sure they emit suitable infra red radiation but there are so many reasons to not do that.
I think I'll just grab the PowerWave wireless sensor bar. It's on sale at the moment and touts having huge range. Review to follow!

I know exactly what you're on about. Sit up on the couch, no problem. Lean back against the couch cushion - out of range. Its maddening! I have found the range for the pointer considerably lacking compared to the range of the remote. Thankfully as of writing things seem to be holding up in my lounge room for now - DON'T touch it!!
The sensor bar doesn't need to be against the TV it can be much closer, like on a coffee table.
Candles DO NOT do the job as well as a sensor bar.
I have a desire to wire up my own sensor with a LED on either side of the screen. Perhaps then the Wiimote would point where its actually pointed. I'll let you know how it goes if i ever make gooD intent into action!

you need to go into the wii settings and find the sensor bar option.
It's easy to fix... there is an option that says sensitivity - all you have to do is set that to maximum... it doesn't really mean sensitivity unless you're damn close... push that up and it'll work like a dream from across most rooms.

it's there... it's been there from the very beginning... at default it's on 2 and it can be up up to 5 I think... it jsut increases the brightness of the IR LED's in the sensor bar.

mine actually works better at lower settings. it's bizarre - if i set it to 5, the pointer will bounce all over the place, but on 1 or 2, it's perfect. _________________

I've played a lot with the sensitivity setting. Trust me people the issue is range. Sensitivity does nothing to the sensor bar, but adjusts the wii-mote's sensitivity to infra-red light. When it's set to high sensitivity you run the risk of it picking up on sunlight or other sources of infra-red radiation (halogen lights for example). With a sensitivity too low, it won't properly "see" the sensor bar.
I've now got myself a PowerWave wireless sensor bar. The range doesn't really seem to be much improved, maybe just a bit. But the real advantage is that being wireless means I can easily plop it on the coffee table in front of me, which works a charm. All I need now is something to prop it up to get the height right, for now I'm just sitting it atop a stack of books.
The real strife here has been Rayman Raving Rabbids, which even if the pointer isn't flickering, simply tells you to move closer to the TV!

I'm trying that tomorrow night. If there is a family killed in a tragic house fire in Melton, Victoria tomorrow, please pray for our souls....

I saw a youtube video of this guy trying that out and he had to be real close to the candle to make it work. He had to have all his lights off, and he said that it would probably work better if the TV was off. _________________

Don't buy the powerwave wired version. The pointer was jittery and just skipped from one place on the screen to another. Totally unusable!

Will take James' tip into consideration, since I sit pretty far back from my TV due to my bed taking up my entire room.
As for the candles, I forgot the sensor bar when I travelled once (I know, smart move) so we tried the candle thing, it does work - but it's a pain in the ass to keep emptying the wax. You can actually try a couple of desk lamps if you're a dumb ass like me and forget your sensor bar at any stage.
