You're going to need both a Gamecube controller AND a Gamecube memory card if you want to play Animal Crossing on the Wii! No other way around it for either thing. _________________

You're honestly better off grabbing the DS version if you have a DS. Either that or waiting for the Wii version.

I guess I should point out that if you buy Animal Crossing on GameCube (as long as it isn't second hand I suppose), the game will come with a free first party memory card, as Animal Crossing needs the whole card to store stuff on.
So all you'll need to worry about with that is a GameCube controller, which I'm sure you'd find cheap enough at any second hand store or even brand new at stores clearing them out (I'm fairly sure JB Hifi have a third party Gamecube Controller with memory card deal going on, but they call it a "Classic-Style Wii Controller" or something similar ).

I picked up a near new black controller from cash converters the other day for $12, was almost going to buy another except it was bundled with an actual gamecube and was $40. _________________

Unfortunately, the Wii Classic Controller doesn't support Gamecube Game Playback, otherwise I'd recommend that.
I think Big W were flogging off Gamecube controllers (3rd Party) recently for pretty cheap ( ~ $20)....might be worth having a look. _________________
