I heard something about consoles being banned for online gaming. I am considering buying a used Xbox 360 pro pack, and just need a bit of info to avoid costly mistake. How can I tell if the console has been banned is there anyway of telling or can you only find out when you try? What are other things to look out for?

There is no way to tell just by looking at the console if it's been banned from Xbox Live. As to some things to look for when buying a second hand console:
* Look to see of signs of the console previously being opened, could indicate either a modded console (which if not banned already from live could get banned) or a previously repaired console.
* Any discolouration of the console, especially around the middle of the console.
As for buying second hand, its a hit and a miss really as most second hand 360s are not that much cheaper then buying a brand new console and with a brand new console you have the full warranty available to you. Really you might save a few dollars but if you have problems with the console then was it really worth the saving _________________ RIP Buddha 19/10/1952 - 03/01/2004

Buy new mate. I went a 2nd hand one once, and it was stuffed. From EB too, so you'd have assumed it had been tested, obviously not too well.
Give yourself the piece of mind, its worth the little bit extra. _________________

The only reason I would consider a 2nd hand 360 would be if the price was crazy low.
Well, I guess I would probably buy a 2nd hand unit that had it's original sales receipt with it as long as there was a decent amount of warranty left.
The main issue with a 2nd hand 360 is that you are probably looking at getting an old console that is almost certainly nearer it's RROD date than a new one and you likely will get little to no warranty with it.
I sold a broken 360 (sold as such) once and I got 2/3rds what I paid for it, I'm not sure about the 2nd hand 360 market now but it would want to be a cheap deal.

DO NOT BUY A SECOND HAND 360!
I would advise against a 360 altogether unless there are games you really love on it. (For me there are tons). But I have a love hate relationship with my 360. I love the games, and play it everyday, but the console is shit, the online service is shit and the people at tech support are shitheads. That being said some of my favourite games are on there...
My point is, there are waaaay too many problems with the 360 and with Microsoft to risk getting one second had. At least get a new one with a full warranty....
