The frame rate is indeed an issue. At times it can go from 30fps to a hairy sub-20 depending on your location. That said, it doesn't stop the graphics and visual design from being sublime. The character models and facial animations put Oblivion to shame.

I really thought Mass Effect would be the game to finally get me into 'Bioware'-esque RPGS, due to the real time nature of the combat, etc, but sadly I don't think it is THAT accessible icon_smile.gif icon_razz.gif

The biggest tragedy for me is that by not owning it I won't get to listen to that majestic, yet slighlty-80's-style sci-fi score...reminds me of Blade Runner, for some reason...

I'm happy to be a member of PALGN's forums due to the fact that you can express a non-favourable opinion about a game, and for the most part, people will accept your opinion without too much animosity or interpreting it as some sort of personal attack on their tastes.

Having just finished the game, all i can say is, I can't wait to do it again!
With so many different possibilites, this game can be mind boggling as to the amount of work they put into the different characters and the storyline.

One of the greatest games I've played in years!

How did you manage that so fast? Did you do all the side quests? I've been doing every one so far, and the first visit to council ship took me ten hours by itself o_o

yeah i'm up to 13 hours on the clock and i feel like thats about 1/3 of the way through, I'm loving it though. Frame rate is a bit of an issue, too many particle effects going off at once, but it is still very playable. The best part for me is how well they pulled off the interactions, as so far i've felt that he has said pretty much what i would say in most of his situations, plus the voice acting is so well done.

indeed, how cool is the soundtrack, reminds me of a throwback to older style game music, just done with better technology.

Howdy y'all, managed to pick up a copy on the 16th also, returned it on the 17th.

Controversial, I know, and I will be accused of having no taste in games and being a 'casual' or a 'n00b', but I simply think that games like Mass Effect (at least from the 3-4 hours I played) are just too big and vast for their own good.

The graphics were kinda average due to a chunky framerate and generic designs, the combat seemed a little janky and unrefined, and my gosh I just despise all those stats and so on, they bore me to tears. Applying 'omni gel' and all that garbage every five minutes, URGH, snooze. Lol, I guess I just don't like RPGS.

I s'pose what I am getting at is that while I can objectively see that an RPG fan would LOVE this game, I just don't care for it and prefer more streamlined gaming experiences...

...things like Gears of War, Uncharted, Call of Duty 4, Shadow of the Colossus, etc, where you are a defined character with a pre-determined set of abilities (which may or may not upgrade) and where the mechanics may be few, but are done really well. Also see God of War, Devil May Cry, etc.

Ah well - I will give it one thing though - the story seemed intriguing, and the dialogue was great - OH, and the SOUNDTRACK was amazing, just about the only thing which would have kept me playing.

Hey man I know where you're coming from. I would've felt exactly the same way a couple of years ago. For the life of me I couldn't see the appeal of RPG's. Much preferred linear action games and FPS's.

However, when Oblivion first came out and was getting such awesome reviews, I decided to give RPG's another try. This time I made sure I stuck with it - no matter how boring I found it to be early on (and believe me I was bored sh**less for the first 10 hours or so). But then something happened - it just clicked! I found myself actually enjoying levelling up - distributing stats, trying stuff out - different armours and equipment, exploring etc....and being fully engrossed in the world. Hell I was roleplaying! - and I was lovin' it.

Since then, I've played all the well-known RPG's (and some lesser knowns) on pretty much all platforms and now RPG's are by far my favourite genre. I still play action games when I can fit them in (Crysis is still sitting on my shelf un-oppened - too busy with ME and 'The Witcher') - but really the're just kinda 'Meh..payed one - played'em all' now.

So - looooong story short - don't give up, give it another shot. Only be prepared to really commit some time and effort into it - you'll get a lot more out of it in the long run. icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, Ugh The Boot, why can't we just lay our swords to rest? icon_razz.gif

If you want to play the hypocrisy / contradiction game, we can play all day icon_razz.gif

Besides, in the case of Metroid Prime 3, for example, your reluctance to play that was based off its admittedly 'last generation' visual technology, which is something that I feel strongly about.

If you had just said "Metroid Prime just isn't my sort of game', I could happily accept your differing opinion.

But why get into this at all, actually? Leave me alone or you'll make me cry.

I got no swords to rest, I just find hypocrisy funny.

^^ Orright dude, have a laugh icon_smile.gif

Honestly I'd probably be disappointed if I came into a thread and DIDN'T find an argumentative douchebag-ey comment from you.

Let the people talk about Mass Effect.

Bah Weep Grah Nah Weep Nini Bong!

i've no idea what language you're speaking, so the universal greeting should suffice.
