I was just playing Forza 2 when this white brick under my TV made a terrible hacking sound, told me my disc was unreadable, and now refuses to close the drive whilst the system is running.
I've got way too much to do at the moment to screw around trying to get this fixed (hence me still being only 40% of the way through Forza2). ****ing hell this hardware seems like it was made by a bunch of toddlers with some spare parts and PVC glue. _________________

Mine died late last year and it's the first console i've ever had die, the 360's are very very easy to break.

Mine also died late last year (disc drive also, a week after I got it), and was also the first console I've had break on me.
2 consoles within a year break with the same problem, and it wasn't even the most common problem that 360s have. And before anyone asks, no I haven't been using the drive as a coaster _________________

It really is amazing how bad these things are put together, i mean two weeks ago i was at family friends house when i noticed an old NES packed halfway into a box, i made the comment "oh, are you taking that to the tip" to which they replied, "nah, we were thinking of selling it to the op shop down the road, it hasn't been used in years, you can take it if you want" i said yes, took it home and the old thing... works, it does what it was designed to do 25 years ago, it plays duck hunt/ Mario brothers flawlessly.
Admittedly the 360 technologically must be far more complex than this old NES, but even my 360 has its disk read error's and such. Its just, you'd think if we, in this day, have the technology to make such a powerful console there has to be a way to manufacture it soundly as was done with the NES in its day. I'd imagine the poor quality control of manufacture today is put down to the price M$ have spend to reduce net loss margins. i.e they aren't spending enough. _________________

Well fuck mine just broke today as well. Bloody unreliable piece of shit i thought it would never happen to mine as all i have had since launch is a few freezes. I bet my 360 is caked full of dust, and it sounds like a freakin jet.
Will have to send it on monday.. then theres probably a 3 week wait.. ffs this is annoying.

The issue isn't the technology itself, these are disc read errors. Maybe I could understand the PS3 getting problems such as this, seeing as Blu-Ray is a new technology but the 360? It's a DVD drive for crying out loud, I've had my DVD-ROM in my PC for about 8 years. I have never, ever, had a problem with it. The fact that the 360 manages to scratch/chew/arse up discs is completely inexcusable. overheating, yes, I can understand, they didn't realise the amount of heat the system produced (although one would have thought this would be tested), disc drive errors quite simply should not happen though.
They just shouldn't.

Especially considering the DVD drive in the 360 is just a basic consumer drive. Where was their QA testing? Maybe nothing will be done until Bill Gates' own Xbox 360 scratches up his favourite porno movie, before setting fire to his house, before it dies of the three rings of death.
/me sighs. Its threads like these that make me wary of getting the 360 (I am going to get it tomorrow heh ).
EDIT: Sad thing is, other than Halo 3 and some other great 360 only games, I just wanted a new console so I could have a problem free gaming experience. I was sick of tinkering with my PC. So this kind of sucks _________________

Gotta love the X360's hardware problems!
Although mine hasn't died yet (fingers crossed), the disc drive doesn't eject very easily. Often you'll have to spend about a minute messing around with it so that it will eject.
No one would happen to have any ideas on how to fix such an issue?

I sent mine away on Monday and got it back Thursday. They have replaced the entire insides of it, Fan, DVD Drive and motherboard and they have placed in the new cooling! It is completely new except for the case! and it now has the BenQ or Phillips drive(Not sure which one as they look the same!!). But yeah im happy only 4 days and its a brand new console basically, still loud as but not as bad as before when the fans were starting to burn at the back LOL. Probably could have caused a fire..

I didn't think the stories of the 360 being heaps loud were true.
Until I turned it on.

The noise of my computer drowns out the noise the 360 makes, except when its starting up a game or something or loading something off the hard drive, but most the time its nothing compared to my computer fans and hard drive so I am quite used to it
Also I can always turn the volume on the TV up a bit _________________

After all the stories I expected it to be louder.. even in-game, having the volume on a reasonable setting drowns out the sound of the fans. Plus, my laptop sits next to the 360 (it bridges the wifi to the 360's LAN port) and its about as loud as the 360 while its sitting on the dashboard screen (of course in-game GoW is a different story..)
Anyway, now I've got mine, I can truly see where you're all coming from. The console reaches unbelievable temperatures in a small space of time. While playing GoW it sounds like its literally eating the disc.. _________________

My computer is silent. Hell, sitting here now, with no music playing, no TV on, no one else around, I can only faintly hear it.
And compared to the Wii, and previous consoles, it's like a jet.
But yeah, sound turned up I don't notice. i didn't notice it till a loading screen came up in Bioshock.

I just rang MS about this (as I said above, been real busy). Apparently I have to go and buy a shipping box and pay for the shipping to their service dept. In the US they get shipping boxes (the "coffin" as it's affectionately known to many 360 owners) sent to their address so there's no need to leave home really, and let's be honest, that's why I bought a 360.
Does anyone know where their service department was for Sydney/Australia? If it's at their HQ I'll see if I can just drop it off in person as it's only a few minutes away from work and uni.
Yay Microsoft. _________________

Spanca i enquired if i can drop mine off and they said no. Really stupid i know.
But they did mine under warranty.. all i had to do was buy a box, and affix the reply paid postage slip.
The place you need to send it to is Teleplan Service Solutions at Regents Park. It will take a day to get there.. so if you sent on Monday you can expect it back Thursday like mine was. DVDdrive changed, fans changed, motherboard changed.

^ Thanks for the heads up. I'll go and buy a box tomorrow.
If it's Regents Park then I wouldn't want to drop it off anyway. I would have only done that if it was in Ryde.
That reply paid slip you speak of, when/where did you get that? Is that in the email they send? _________________

Yeah the email that they send you has info on how to pack it and also has the reply paid slip in it. Just cut it out and stick it on the box. I assume this is only if they are repairing your Xbox under warranty though.

Excellent. According to the Filipino lady I spoke to (who called me sir every 2nd word, or failing that "Sir Spencer". I really should call her more often) my 360 is "well within warranty". I don't what date she has on record for my purchase, but it's only got about a month until it hits its one year anniversary with me. Or nearly 2 months if you take it from the time I first got a working console _________________

if so, then 11 months old is "well within warranty". _________________

The 3 year upgraded warranty was for RROD only. _________________ RIP Buddha 19/10/1952 - 03/01/2004

After playing Bioshock for 2 hours, my machine is only warm to the touch, not hot like people say. Does this mean my machine is possibly an updated version with new fas/heatsinks and i am likely to not get the RRoD?

If my console was like this outside the 12 months, I'd just crank the heating and induce the red rings. _________________

Hope so for you. 100% of 360 owners I know IRL (4) have all had the RRoD, with all of them out of warranty. Sucks to be them. _________________
