*wets self*
I've been anticipating this for about a month now as for those who don't know I'm a bit of a Nikon fanboy and this announcement is so good I had to put it somewhere to prevent my mind from overloading.
Just a quick rundown of both though:
D300 Nikon: $1800 US, available in November 2007
12.3 megapixel
6-8 frames per second shooting
ISO 100 to 6400
D3 Nikon: $5000 US, available in November 2007
12.1 megapixel (full frame sensor FTW)
Dual flash card slots
ISO 100 to 6400
6-11 frames per second shooting
HDMI compatible!!
Plus five new Nikon lenses!
14-24mm f/2.8G ED
24-70mm f/2.8G ED
400mm f/2.8G ED VR
500mm f/4G ED VR
600mm f/4G ED VR
I'll definitely end up buying a D300 (As I almost have the funds to purchase it now) and possibly the 400mm lens. Thoughts anyone?

Sound pretty good, being a Canon user, I can't help but draw parallels, and the D300 sounds similar to the newly announced 40D, and the D3 sounds like the 1D MkIII .
Speaking of which Canon have announced 2 new bodies and 3 new lenses:
EOS 40D
10.1 Megapixel
6.5 frames per second
Live View (Ability to use the LCD instead of the viewfinder)
Self Cleaning sensor
EOS 1Ds Mark III
The top of the line body
21.1 megapixel (5632 x 3750)
5 frames per second at 21.1Mp
Dual Processor
Live View
Self Cleaning Sensor
Lenses:
EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
Some promising new products from both companies.
I use a EOS 1D Mark II N, which is 8.2 MP, 8.5 frames per second, CF + SD slots, and pretty damn awesome _________________

I don't mind using a Canon from time to time, my main problem with the D1 MkIII is that it has no top side LCD screen which can get very annoying coming from a person who's cameras mostly have a top side LCD screen.

Alex beat me to it. I'll take a 1Ds MkIII thanks. 21.1mp would really match my photographic skillz.
On a vaguely related note, is there anything to be wary of in buying a used DSLR? Like a 300/350D or a D40? _________________

General wear and tear, attack of the dustbunnies on the sensor, the amount of usage it has been through (Shutters are only rated for a certain number of uses, after this they are not guaranteed to work properly). _________________

I used a 1D MkII, it just didn't feel like a professional camera, it no doubt had the bells and whistles a professional needed but really it terms of aesthetics it wasn't a very worthy camera. I'm not sure about the 1D MkIII though I would like th take of of those out for a shoot.
Buying used DSLrs are good and generally cheapish, though I would really find out when it was bought and take a couple of practice shots with it, really get to understand it before buying it.
Also ask why the guy is selling the camera, people have bought used cameras to find out a feature or something in it is busted badly. One such instance was someone buying a D80 and worked out later that the battery in it was jammed into it thus it needed to be on AC charge always.

I'm wary of buying used camera's as they are such precision built objects. One scratch or one part out of alignment and it will cost you as much as a new camera anyway.
Eying up a 40D myself and some L-Series lenses. Looks very tasty, but want a hands on first. Might buy a run-out 30D if I can get a good price. I was looking a bit cheaper originally but really want a metal body.
(-Off Topic - Nice Avatar Spanca, Opeth are my fav band. )
