There was a small amount of voice acting in Prime 2, and even in 1 and Hunters. The federation troopers' log, where a soldier relays the incident where they were attacked by the Ing, contained a couple of words and some human screams. The few living Luminoth also make some alien noises that are sub-titled. There are a few 'computer voice' samples ('data received'), and the PAL version of Prime 1 has a narrator for the intro and ending. Samus also screams when she dies.
But the reason there hasn't been much voice acting in the series is that all the 'relationship' parts of the story have been off camera, they're covered by the instruction book. Samus rarely meets a living ally, enemies are vicious aliens, and everything is related by (appropriately) text based computer reports.
I'm happy to have a small amount of voice acting, even from Samus in certain situations. Samus narrates most of the games in 1st person via text anyway, the idea being that you are reading Samus report of the mission (this is made very explicit in Fusion and Zero Mission). So it would be ok to have voice acting where it would be appropriate - when the narrative is in present tense, and there is an allied character present. But the majority of the game should remain text based. The dramatic angle of the series is about history, as well as a 'personal diary' type narration, which should be written, not acted. Samus should not talk to herself, internal monologues should always be text based.
Games with lots of voice acting are the ones that have stories only spuriously related to the gameplay - they're sort of like soap operas with interactive elements. Metal gear games are not 'voice acted games' (apart from incidental voice acting like soldiers talking), they're a movie and a game spliced together. You play one bit, then you're told another bit, and you have no choice where you go next. Metroid is not this type of game, it is a game where you discover the narrative at your own pace.

Excellenté. That's actually quite reassuring to know. I hope this added interest in effective narrative delivery means great things for the remainder of the story. You know, for all your sakes...
Not that I care or anything |

Something that we've talked about on this thread is how the screen shots aren't nearly as impressive as the game when it's all moving. Well now with Nintendo's e3 press conference, we have seen a good long preview of the gameplay, which I thought we should use this thread to discuss.
Because I haven't played the first 2 Metroid games, I can't compare the look of this game to them, but to me, it looked completely action packed, great graphics, seemed to be a good control scheme. What do you guys think?
Also, I assumed that because they showed the Wii Zapper before they showed the Metroid 3 preview, I thought that you would be able to use the Wii Zapper for Metroid, but it seems that will not be the case. So what do you guys think of the Wii Zapper and do you think it would work well if it were used in Metroid 3? _________________

^ Yeah I was about to say, for something that isn't a FPS, it sure was promoted as one. _________________

well, it's entirely possible that Corruption moves away from it's roots and does become a fully fledged FPS title, but chances are it was done in the aim of attracting new players to the franchise. _________________

I read on another forum that 1up said they couldn't see any backtracking or revisiting of areas being in play. _________________

Yeah, the whole 'lock on but keep the free aimer' adds to the FPS element a bit. _________________

I understand now, with the hole lock on thing they've got going, it would take the skill out of a multiplayer mode. _________________

Corruption is looking sharp! I love those 'bots.
Samus squeaks too much though, I don't like that one bit. And yeah, what the crap have they done with the redesign?! She looked better in the original Prime!
Minor niggles aside, I cannot freaking wait for this game! _________________

This game looks unbelievable. I wasn't quite sure what they meant before about the lock on system, but now I understand and it's a great system they've got. I like the design of Samus' outfit and especially how she looks in alt form.
@Cerebral: Those pictures you posted - are they actually from MP3:C? cos if they really are, they are quite disappointing. _________________

I screenshotted them from one of IGN's new videos, showing basically the prologue of the game. It's very surprising, given Retro's otherwise sublime production values, to have such a shoddy character model on display. _________________
