Excellent - this could only be topped by
a) the firmware finally allowing you to play the remaining great PS2 games that have fallen by the wayside so far (Jak 1 I'm looking at you); and
b) the buttons on GH2 for PS2 finally corresponding with the PS2 controller.
Anyone tested either yet?
[EDIT] I suppose it has to be available first

Well that is good news, but it shows Sony prefer to work on firmware then getting new titles out _________________ RIP Buddha 19/10/1952 - 03/01/2004

So does that mean I can stream pics, music & movies just like on my 360? I hope so...
Also even though the resolution for DVD's etc has been bumped upto 1080p it won't make much difference because those pictures are recorded in resolutions much less, correct? So the picture is actually being stretched as opposed to a HD picture which would probably be in it's native resolution at around 1080. Somebody correct me if i'm wrong but that's my understanding of it. _________________

Yeah, I wouldn't exactly call watching DVDs or playing PS 1 & 2 games in 'FULL HD'. The resolution might be there, but the content ain't.
I'm interested also in what the 'streaming' is bringing to the table. Althoguh I doubt it's anywhere near that of Media Centre compabilities. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Well if it does actually stream content like the 360 (maybe not to the capacity that media centre does)....but with remote play now being accessible over the internet....hell I could bring my psp into work and look at pics, music and movies on my Ps3! That's frickin' awesome!!! That's way better than media centre imo. _________________

I'm glad that they've added upscaling to the BC, since my TV has a pissweak upscaling chip. Hopefully this'll make my PS2 games a little less ugly on my LCD _________________

I wonder if the upscaling is like upping the res on a PC monitor for a game? Or if it will be just like stretching a 640*480 movie to a size of 1280*1024. This will be interesting. _________________ "If ignorance is bliss...then knock the smile off my face!"

Absolutely, that's got serious potential! I like this firmare update quite a lot, some very nice improvements in there. I know the upscaling is something that people have been wanting from the start, good to see they're listening. Remote play is a great idea, and a nice bonus for PSP owners. I think they're trying to tempt me to buy one. _________________

compared to what the rumors were floating around a couple of weeks ago, i'm a lil disappointed that they haven't made it possible to access the xmb while in game mode etc. _________________

Available now guys - currently downloading.
EDIT: Just letting you guys know, you have to go to Game settings and turn on the upscaling first before it does it. God of War II looks f**king fantastic now.
And also on the Backwards Compatibility, Zone of the Enders 2 works now. I'll test some more when I get back from an outing. _________________

Now I'm jealous. GoW II upscaled.
Upscaling looks great on the 360 with Xbox games. PS3 does the same for PS2 now that's a huge bonus.

Upscaling looks odd on We Love Katamari.
No joy on BC for Jak 1. Anyone tried Guitar Hero 1/2 yet?

No-one's mentioned yet if PS1/2 games are being stretched or rendered natively in HD...

Its not possible to "stretch" an image into a higher resolution though. Stretching will just enlarge the pixels, not create more. Also, the size of the pixels depends on the size and res of your display so this must be the real thing.
I think.
If so, +1 to software emulation. _________________

The PS1/2 games will be rendered in 1080p, but just using SD textures and what not. I find the irony sweet that people were bagging software emulation until it was finally done right on the PS3. Now to hope that Microsoft adds more 720p capable executables for Xbox games.

I realise all of that, and yes it is obviously very possible to stretch an image, DVDs are obviously being stretched to HD on the PS3. Ergo, [DrTim and] I wondered if games were receiving the same treatment, or being displayed natively.

I see. But that stretching has to do with the TV, not the PS3.
I don't have a PS3 though so I can't be sure but I do think that, prior to this update, its the TV which will change the picture to fit its native res and hence make the picture very "pixelated". _________________

Actually, it can be either the PS3 or the TV doing it, and chances are the PS3 will stretch/scale/whatever better/smoother than the average TV. This is moot for PS1 and 2 games if they are actually being rendered at up to 1080p though.

From what I saw in Ace Combat 5, its just being resampled and smoothed, not rendering at a higher resolution as such.
Though I could be wrong, just seemed that I was getting aliasing in big pixels still, just that they were now smoothed, like the 2xSal modes in some emulators. _________________

For the few of you who've gotten the upscaling to work: Are you using a 1080p compatible TV?
My LCD is 720p, and despite what combination of upscaling and/or smoothing options I choose, it seems to be either exactly the same, or slightly worse. _________________ "There are always casualties in war, gentlemen.
