well this isn't entirely true your screwed if you have a SD tv (won't play if you import since it doesn't upscale/downscale ) _________________

None required man, the PS3 has a universal power supply, all you need is an Aussie PC power cable, and you're good to go. It makes things really easy.

That's interesting actually because one of the reasons I thought it was made region-free was the new legislation that required it. _________________ GAMEparents

it seems to be some games and not all but i'll qoute someone from the official playstation forum
| Quote: | PS3 games are region-free, right?
So all PAL PS3 games should be playable on all NTSC PS3s, yeah?
"Game not supported (80028F10)"
Uh oh. This is all you'll see if you try to boot up a PAL PS3 game on an NTSC PS3 in standard def or 480p. I've tested this with both disc-based and downloaded PS3 games, and they don't work at all.
(Tested with PAL versions of GT:HD, Tekken: DR & Full Auto 2: Battlelines)
The PAL/NTSC divide has not gone away. Some PS3 games from PAL regions can only be played on NTSC PS3s in 720p, 1080i or 1080p. That's bad news for anyone with an import PS3, but no HD display. Could be particularly nasty if you've just bought games from the Playstation Store or your local game shop. They won't work, you'll be given no warning (as the games are "region-free"), and your PS3 won't even tell you why. Perhaps the error message should say:
"Game not supported. Buy a Bravia." evoraz.gif
To further confuse the PAL/NTSC issue, all PS3s (local or import) can only output 1080 at 60Hz. So if you're the owner of a Panasonic HD CRT, that may mean that while your TV can handle 1080i (50Hz), you won't even be able display your PAL PS3 on it as it, as it will only output 1080 @ 60Hz. *sigh*
So much for region-free. The PAL and NTSC regions are alive and well on PS3. |
so its not the console itself but a majority of games will not work

Say what? Oh no, and I was going to rent Full Auto 2 yesterday to test the online mode (see my PS3 online problem thread). Gee, I'm glad I didn't, I wouldn't have been able to play it! Looks like I'll just have to get Motorstorm to test it then, though it's just not the same of course.
As for the PAL and NTSC regions being alive on the PS3, that's not exactly true, only in certain cases, and only when you're outputting at 480. It's not a majority of games that are affected, only a few. I've bought Super Rub a Dub off the Aussie PS store, no problems there.
Even so, I think I'll be sticking to buying US games then, no risk then (except if the game has an online mode, as far as I know right now, US PS3 games will not work online in Australia). I've heard about the 50/60Hz thing before, and it's a pain. I can't display 1080i on my compatible TV because of that. _________________

I have a US version of AC4, works absolutely fine for me online with a Japanese PS3 _________________

Hey, remember when I bought Fight Night round 3 (PAL) a couple days before launch and mentioned that it said in the booklet that it's only compatible with PAL market consoles? Maybe that explains why.

...or it's a ploy to keep people from importing so it doesn't hurt the EU/AU market too much.

yeah i think that is what nintendo is trying to pull off by threatning sellers in the US to 'DO NOT FEED DEH EUROPEANZ' technique.
but so far we've been able to purchase US games and play them on our consoles but doesnt PAL games have to have something done different to them for them to play on our machines? or something like that so would their machines in USA and JAPAN have the same mechanics to be able to play PAL games? just found it odd because i dont see any american importing from aussie lol _________________

Considering that they usually get most stuff before us, I don't see why they would bother in most cases.

Theoretically, yes.
I'm getting Virtua Fighter 5 US version from Play Asia, and will let you know if it works fine, if you need further confirmation. _________________

oh good...i hope so!
coz if thats the case then i can search for them from the states or the UK, where they should be a lot cheaper!!
and adding to my own question....
games from the uk/europe are PAL right?
so they would DEFINATELY work on an australian PS3?

I dont thiink you can play USA titles online like resistance and motorstorm, as they have spicific links to Au/Nz servers in the software, with "stay tuned for global servers coming soon".
I am keen to see what happens when Admeister plays an Aussie disc online on his import PS3. _________________

All titles are region free atm? That's good, but I'm not sure I'd be getting any from overseas. Could turn out to be more expensive, what with stockrates and stuff like that. _________________ "My true email is novaphoenix1984@hotmail.com"

atm i've read that its cheaper to import than buy here currently, the only thing that really concerns me is that if you import a game from overseas that you might not be able to take advantage of the free online play that sony offers. Hopefully when they release global servers this will fix this problem (lets just hope that lag doesnt become persistance because of this) _________________
