Hey PC people!
Alrighty, I'm looking for a place where I can get my hands on Windows XP Home. I don't have Windows, so it would be a full version to install on one of those new iMac systems that can run both Windows and OSX.
I'm going XP over Vista because:
1. I want XP so I can play some games on my Mac - the 'Half Life' games and the new "Sam & Max' series.
2. I don't want to spend $23.5 million on Vista, as I don't think it'd be worth it for me at this point in time.
So, I was wondering if anybody here knew of where, in Sydney, I could get a new copy of Windows XP Home?
Or am I limited to buying it only online now?
Any help would be appreciated - thanks! _________________

I've definately seen it recently in Officeworks here in Melbourne. Haven't really payed attention anywhere else though.
But yeah, there is nothing wrong with getting XP, especially if PC isn't your main place for gaming and you already have a Mac.
The Vista upgrade is only $150 so you can do that in a few years. _________________

Yeah, Officeworks don't seem to have it on their website...
I think I saw a software site selling it for $89 - I'll look into that (it's cheaper than a new console, and will have to do for now...). _________________

Game shortage, huh?
It won't be that cheap though. Will still be about $250 I think. Ring some stores since it won't be the number one priorty to have it listed on the website (since Vista is released). _________________

Yeah, I saw a full-version on an Australian site (I think it's an Australian site)... I'll provide the link (is that OK on this site? - delete it if it's not, and apologies in advance):
http://www.softwareoutlet.com/p-7958.html
Is that a reputable site?
Otherwise I'll have to call some stores that might be able to order it in.
And crestfallen...
Yes, as a matter of fact, I'm experiencing a game shortage.
I REALLY want to play HL2 (loved the first one back in my PC owning days), and my new Mac can handle it, plus some - I'm VERY close to getting an Xbox 360, but I think I'll wait until the prices are lower - PC gaming until then (and that long wait for the good stuff on the Wii to come out... it's coming, don't worry).
There seem to be some good titles on the PC anyhow - need something where I can shoot at aliens or zombies, or alien-zombies.

It's an American based site, so I wouldn't buy from them. As for getting Windows XP Home, the best I can find is $119 OEM from MSY (PDF price list, scroll down on the right, second page, it's listed there), meaning you'd need to buy at least one piece of hardware.

OEM from a MSY requires RAM, CPU, Motherboard and HDD purchase...

I'm used to Umart's one piece of hardware policy... so apologies. It's $132 at Umart, and can be anything from a mouse to a HDD to memory.

So, is Umart a good site?
Trustworthy, Australian, etc.?
I'd happily get it with a new mouse - something good for gaming - can somebody recommend a good mouse for gaming, to go with my Windows XP Home purchase?
By the way, you guys rule for helping me out with this info, so big thanks!

I've bought two systems from them, and an OEM license of XP64bit, as well as Vista Home Premium OEM.
Had no problems with them, prices are some of the cheapest in Sydney (only cheaper being MSY) and they actually have staff on duty, so I haven't experience 30 minutes waiting in to buy something (like I did at MSY on numerous occasions).
As for a mouse, you'll be looking at G5 or G7 from Logitech or a selection of the Razer mouses (heard good things, however haven't used them previously).

It seems that the site is temporarily down and will be up again soon.
Gives me time to get some funds together for the dual-purchase.
Thanks again thebigm! _________________

I buy a lot of my gear these days through them, as for a good mouse, if your willing to spend $120 or so on it is the Logitech MX Revolution, it's a top quality mouse I highly recommend

I purchase my Antec P180B from Umart. Good service. Went to their supplied computers, ordered, and got it the next minute.
There were virtually no lines. Definitely recommend them.
EDIT: THis is Umart Sydney in Enfield, heard bad things about Umart in QLD.

Microsoft issued a product recall a week after Vista was released for all copies of Windows XP to be returned to base. This led to much frustrating searching by me and my father as we tried to track down a new copy for his PC. We were forced to buy a $160 copy of XP Home 2002 edition (ie, no service packs) from Harvey Norman. That's why it's so bloody hard to get your hands on a non-OEM version.
Try finding Windows XP Pro Academic upgrade, it's cheaper than Home (RRP is $119, though small computer shop owners will try to screw you over) and it's the Pro version, which MUST be better than Home, right?
