So, who's watched their free copy of Casino Royale? I just watched it tonight, it's such an awesome movie, it was great seeing it again after seeing it at the movies. icon_smile.gif It looks very sharp on Blu-Ray, I just wish I had a good TV to watch it on! icon_lol.gif 480i is pretty ordinary.

Did this topic really need to be created? There is practically a full discussion on it in the other thread with four pages.

Well, it's not a proper topic.

Ringz: Sounds great. I've got the theme music stuck in my head!

So you basically made a thread about watching a Blu-Ray movie at DVD quality. That's pretty cool. Next you should make a thread about how awesome F.E.A.R. looks at 640x480 in low detail on an Nvidia 8800 GTX.

In the hope that this thread could possibly be salvaged in some way, what other Blu-Ray movies have you got and have you found that the increase in resolution (which you apparantly can't experience) is worth the extra price?

Gee, you're so supportive. icon_razz.gif As for other movies, I have Talledega Knights (which I've seen in 480p). Sure, 480 is pretty weak, but I can still see a difference between Blu-Ray and DVD. It's not my fault I can't watch them at a higher res.

Anyway, the Blu-Ray aspect is only a part of why I created this thread, it's also about how much I like the movie! icon_razz.gif

Does Blu-Ray use a different compression technique to DVD? I haven't really bothered keeping up with the specs because I'm not overly interested in the HD formats.

In fact, how does Blu-Ray handle its lower resolutions? Is the film/movie transfered at the maximum 1080p and then the system itself dongrades the resolution to suit the display?

Blu-Ray movies should be using MPEG-4 rather than the MPEG-2 of DVD movies. There is definitely a massive improvement of quality. The opening "bits" (producer credits?) look brilliant. However when you're watching the movie, you stop noticing the quality improvement after about ten minutes, except there will be some scenes where you are wowed at the difference.

I think it would be better to move this to the Entertainment Forum and perhaps change the topic to HD Movies.

Is it a case that if you watched the dvd a week ago then chucked on the Blu-Ray that you would suddenly go "Oh wow that's amazing" factoring in that you are seeing it in the same resolution, or is it more a proximity thing, that you notice the added benefits of the compression in a side by side (figuratively speaking, say instead watching one directly after the other) comparison?

This thread:

Is it about the specific movie and therefore an Entertainment forum topic that could have raised in one of the many movie threads?

OR

Is it about Blu-Ray as a format? In which case...Is there not already some threads for that too?

Or perhaps you could just use this one: http://palgn.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=16745

It is quite an extra price too. Sanity are selling Casino Royale for $55.

Even in a MPEG-2 to MPEG-2 comparison, you'll notice better quality on the HD-format side due to the higher bit-rate coming from the player. It's like converting a clip into a 320x480 and 640x960 and viewing the 2nd at 50% size on your computer.

While I notice a rather big difference in the picture-quality of a Blu-Ray ( when compared to a DVD ), the clarity feels like a mere bonus. It certainly isn't a necessity, but it is worth the extra price on some films ( I, for example, can not wait for the HD version of Blade Runner ). But it doesn't feel as big an advancement as DVD was to VHS - go figure.

I haven't seen Casino Royale on Blu-Ray yet, though - but I am ( probably ) going to buy it soon.

Ads, aren't you able to watch Blu-Ray at 1080i? I know games don't work on your TV as they're 60hz, but surely the PS3 is able to output movies to 50hz? I don't mean to troll, but the 360 is able to do movies and DVDs at 50hz, thus allowing people with TVs like mine to use HD-DVD.

Hmm, good point there. I'm not sure how I would do that though, the PS3 doesn't upscale Blu-Ray movies automatically, and when I set the PS3's output to 1080i, the picture goes all blurry. Do you mean that I should just set it to 1080i anyway, and then try playing a Blu-Ray movie? I didn't try that, actually. icon_smile.gif
