Gday guys, Im getting the PS3 next friday. I have broadband on my home computer which is in my lounge room which connects to my phone line. My ps3 will be in my spare room which i made into a games room, but it dosnt have a phone line in that room. So i was gonna go wireless with the ps3. What do i need to do this. I still want to keep my computer on the normal phone line and make the ps3 wireless. I heard something about connecting a wireless router to my computer router. I hope this makes sense and any help would be apreciated. And what type of securtiy comes with wireless connections.

I think that you can get wireless routers that have ethernet cable ports as well . I think they refer to them as having "switches" or something. I'll find a link to what I mean.
http://www.tradeclub.com.au/Files/Images/Products/Full/NR1pic1.jpg
If you get a router like the one above, you won't need to connect it to your current router. You just need to set this one up to replace the one that you have.
Most/all routers provide security options (such as WEP, etc.). I'll do a little bit more research and get back to you.
Edit: I got the following information from: http://www.osage.net/wirelesssecurity.html
"First, make sure the signal is encrypted between the wireless router and connected computers using Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) or the newest encryption feature, Wireless Protected Access (WPA). WPA is the preferred encryption protocol.
Second, a wireless router can also be configured to stop broadcasting its name, or SSID, so “war drivers” cannot easily find it over the airwaves.
Third, limit which computers have access to your wireless router network by assigning their Media Access Control (MAC) addresses in your router. Computers without their MAC Addresses assigned in your wireless router configuration are prevented from connecting to your wireless network.
Last, secure the PCs on your wireless router network by using firewalls, anti-virus software, anti-Spyware, and adjusting PC file sharing settings.
Check your wireless router owner’s manual for instructions on how to implement security settings or click on the link below to access your manufactures’ website or contact your local PC technician for assistance."
I hope you've found this helpful
Edit: In case you found the above information confusing (no offense intended), I think it's pretty much saying that you will be able implement various different security measures and that you can find out how to do them by referring to your router's manual.
Ps. Sorry that the info I got was in instruction form (well, kinda), but I wanted to find something that covered all of the security features that wireless routers provide. Anyway, that enough rambling from me for the day . _________________

That sounds about right, cwad. A wireless modem/router combo is very handy (it's what I'm using), but it might be cheaper for him to just buy a wireless router since he already has a modem.
Other than that, you should be fine, the PS3 should hook up to a wireless connection, no probs. _________________

It should be simple, PALGN wrote that it was an automated sort of process in the hardware review.. _________________

Yeah it is, are you still using ethernet cables or are you trying to use the wireless router now? Normally when something like this happens its best to just do some of these little things to help eliminate the possible errors.
Make sure that the cables are firmly plugged into the router/console.
router turned on
console turned on
Wireless is turned on through router (normally have to do this via your computer)
sometimes its more of a hardware issue if you arnt detecting anything at all, and you might want to restart your router as well, it sometimes helps reboot and refresh the list. _________________

Baaah If it werent for technicality problems I think we'd all live a good further 10 years without all the stress.
My wireless is pretty much a gamble on whether it will work, I probably have a shit case of a scenario ever possible.
My PS3 is on the lowest level of the house, while my router is upstairs. Im only getting a 33% or so signal, and updates are a freaking pain, and I have no idea but sometimes the wireless and internet will work, sometimes it wont.. just horrible!!!!!!!!!!!
I took the router downstairs along with the modem, everything was working fine up stairs on my pc im currently making this post , except of course i was getting a lower signal now hence more lag.. and I dont know why but my PS3 just couldnt connect to the internet like it has on previous occasions.
I seriously might consider getting a techy to straighten all this shit out!!
- Although I never really bought the PC for online gaming, it was mainly to play some of the uber games ive loved like MGS and final fantasy, I just want my damn moneys worth and use all possible features lol
Its reminds me of giving something like a fully customised PC to a computer illiterate person that would probably only use his/her pc like 5 times a month _________________ xfire = andylulz
