So how will I know if I'm buying a quieter one?

Or the ear-splitting *BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP* that the VMU spat out at boot. For such a small console, the DC really was quite loud.
Nice to hear that the 360 is getting a better drive in it, I just wish that they'd put in quieter ones to begin with. Ah well. *turns up the volume* _________________

Mine makes and cranking sound when I go back onto the dashboard after the game's finished. I'm so considering taking it back to the Gamewizards and asking them for a replacment console just to get a quiter one.

I wouldn't call the Dreamcast quiet by any means, but the 360 is certainly louder. _________________

I agree with that. My Dreamcast is amusingly loud, but my 360 actually interferes with the playing experience. I can put up with the PS2 and sort of just not notice it, but the 360 quite obviously detracts from the console. When it's that bad, you know you've got some shit on the walls.

Am I deaf or is my 360 a freak? Sure the drive spinning up when you transition from Dashboard to a game is fairly audible but it goes away once you're in the game (apart from LGSW2).
Actually, I'm probably just used to whirring noise, my G5 iMac thinks it's a Jet sometimes...

system noise has never really bugged me (I have 9 fans in my PC, I don't really have a choice), it's easy to zone out. The fact that the new drives apparantly offer faster loading times is pretty damn awesome though. Anything that gets you into the game quicker is a bonus.

The only time when the 360's noise level annoys me is when I leave it on overnight downloading something big, but otherwise I don't care. Either the volume is way up or um.... the volume is way up. _________________

Dreamcast and 360 are both loud, but my 8500 Radeon is loudest thing for me right now. _________________

The only time I hear my 360 running is when I put in PDZ , that thing sounds like a train running through my house. Although, I do sit back quite a bit. _________________

Although I think its a great system I do hate the noisy design. So anything to keep it quiet gets a thumbs up.

Yeah, although I do have mild rining in my ears due to a few unfortunately loud gigs, my 360 isn't generally that loud except for the odd occaision. My PC makes it sound like a snoozing kitten, with all those roaring 120mm fans.
Maybe we got good ones? _________________

I don't know about 360, but when my Wii's running Red Steel, I could swear it replaces the laser with a knife, the sounds it makes... I've had to stop playing a couple of times just to check the disc to set my mind at ease.
Nice to see this annoyance will be removed by the time I get a 360. _________________

^ This is true, the long beep is my VMU asking me to replace it's battery - which I really need to do. But still, those batteries drain pretty fast and that is one hell of an annoying sound. _________________

heh, kitten.
mine sounds like a herd of hibernating elephants.
i suppose that's what happens when you have 6 120mm (or bigger) fans. _________________

I noticed the same thing with Red Steel and it is the only game that I have noticed it with. Besides Red Steel it isn't really much of an issue.

If your model was built after November '06 then it will be not be as noisy. I don't know if thoose kinds of details are published on the box. _________________

Quieter drives?
I can't hear the drive over the fan noise...
