I have only just bought world off warcraft two days ago, I bought the expansion too (for $39) and have really enjoyed the experience so far. I am not overdoing it, just playing 2 or 3 hours at a time and its great being able to interact with all the people that get around. I have read on a lot of other forums that people new to the game get treated badly and taken advantage of, but everyone i interacted with either said hello or offered to help me out on quests and didnt want anything in return. what a great time I have had. I am on level 8 now, can't wait to explore a bit more.

I also bought the atlas, are the other game guides any good? I have seen the expansion play guide, the master guide and the dungeon guide. Are any of those reccomended?

thanks in advance

tbh, i don't really get where that comes from, perhaps i am too sheltered or something, i don't know, but i found people pretty willing to help when i was first starting, and i'm usually alright to give someone a hand if i'm not currently busy and it's not too far out of my way.

the BIGGEST piece of advice i can offer though, is read the quest text. there are the occasional quest that has no information as to where to go, but 99% of the time, the information is in the quest log.

to go with this, it's often a good idea to check the map screen. even if it's not there, if it says "go south west, to the generic elf pond 17" then if you can see a waterbody in the general area it's telling you to go, it's more often than not, where you're supposed to go.

if you're genuinely lost as to where to go after this, then ask in /general. i think it's the same person asking every 5 minutes where a quest objective is, that really gets peoples goat.

tbh, no.

even the Atlas is pretty much a waste of money, unless you're into artwork for games.

best resources are:
www.wowwiki.com
wow.allakhazam.com
www.thottbot.com
between them, you should have no dramas finding anything.
you should add this addon, if nothing else though. it adds the map coordinates to your world map, which makes finding things much easier.

i use Allakhazam first, then Thottbot, and Wowwiki for strategies, but until you're in your 50s, you shouldn't need any strats. Alla and thott both have maps to show where a mob, or item or whatever is, which is handy.

I have made a character from every race each one has a different class, so all I have to do is level them up. I started playing with a human/warrior which I think is the most generic type I think so I started the other races. Dont know If I will use them all but its good to know they are there.

imo, Warriors are quite a complex class. in MMORPGs they aren't your typical high health, high damage character that most RPGs have for Warriors. their primary function in MMOs is to get hit and get healed.

don't be put off by this though, imo Warriors are quite easy to use, but quite hard to master. most people can be a passable warrior without much know-how, but you'll soon learn the difference between an average player, and a good player. though this can be said of any class.

imo, Mages are probably the most basic class around. they're like mages in most RPGs, high damage, low health.
nihilcreative wrote:
How long does it take to level up to a decent level? And how do you make new friends in it? I bought this primarily for the social type gaming that this game seems to have.

I am really enjoying what I have done so far, but I need to take a break to work on my final fanatasy collection icon_smile.gif

i'm not really sure how long it should take you to reach a decent level, i can't really remember how long it took me, or what you'd consider "decent".

playing 2-3 hours a day, should should hit 30 pretty quick, 2 weeks at the outside.

to make friends? that's harder.

sorry to say but a first time player really won't match someone levelling an alt, or a new toon on a new server. so really you'll probably have to party up with some people to do quests.

if you see someone doing something like what you're trying to do, ask them if they're doing the same quest, and ask if they want to party. you can link the quest name in the chat window by shift+clicking the quest-name in your log.

once you've done that quest, ask them what other's they're doing, see if you have the same quests and see if they want to do them too.

if you find that they're pretty cool, add them to your friends list, and see how they're doing each time you log on, say hi, ask them if they want to quest some more and so on.

eventually, you might get a good crew together to do some harder quests, or instances.

hope some of this is helpful.

helpful? my friend that advice was outstanding! thanks for the help and the little bit of a leg-up. I am always open to advice when it comes to gaming, I hardly get the time to learn the ins and outs of many games due to the fact that I work full time and am studying my masters degree part time. This was why I was hesitant to buy world of warcraft, with the massive game collection I already have, but I really like the way it is design for the casual gamer and isnt too taxing on your time if you have the willpower to pull yourself away from the ongoing quests.

thanks again for the help

Ive leveled a pally to 60, rogue to 60 and a warrior to 60.

Currently working on my mage but I'm finding it a bit hard and as well as kinda slow. Well actually I leveled it to 21 in 2 days (lol ;D 12 hours playing time) but finding it slower then others and I don't have much free tine left icon_razz.gif

I want to go melee again. After doing some end gaming on my friends druid they dont really thrill me either.

Any suggestions on to what class to go next, I made the pally a LONG time ago 3 months after beta, and I see they have changed SOOO much. Im interested in making another pally but maybe a shaman to. Damn you wow!

P.S <- Ive started on Thaurissan (new oceanic PVP server) if anyone is there pst Kikujiro

nihilcreative - everything obs said is spot on, the only extra bits I'd add are to pick one character and try and focus on them, the classes really start to become individual at about level 10 (like pets & demons, and you start getting your talent points to spend).

In terms of your time spent playing, 2 and 3 hours sessions are great to get in and get a heap done, but the first time you attempt the instanced dungeons (like Deadmines or Wailing Caverns) you might want to try and give yourself a good 2 or 3 hours just for the instance - they always seem to drag on and on, and nothings worse than having to leave a good group (especially when your close to the bosses!).

the thing I've always found with WoW is that if somebody is polite and asks nicely most people are more than helpful, and anyone else is a candidate for your /ignore list. There seems to be a heap of new players lurking at the moment, and I try and help where I can - except if somebody asks for gold or epicz plz!

Friends wise, guilds are a great place for social interaction, especially ones that have their own websites / forums and teamspeak servers. Once you start regularly questing with the same people you get chatting and the social part really shines. They can be a bit hit and miss, and if you join one called something like OrKSlayaz or similar don't expect urbane witty conversation, but normally you /gquit at any time and join others.

no idea man, I imagine they are primarily healers end-game. Highest I've ever played one was about 30ish, and up till then I was mainly tanking and it went ok as long as I was able to control the pulls and we went slowish. But end-game there are going to be better tanking and dps classes then shammies, so it's totems and healing waves methink - used to own in Warsong Gulch though heh.

Out of curiosity, what do you play and what are your thoughts?

As for me I found the healing life and lack of dps (christ the druid could do better in both) on my pally at end gaming utterly shameful. I did infact get some decent gear ranging from T1 and some T2, and of course a big ass shiny weapon.

Rogue was fun leveling, but not entirely fun at end game. I guess I liked the range of weapons pallys and warriors had over rogues. Which brings me to warrior, man that was never dull, fun leveling and fun at end game and moreso fun at pvp, I got the same dps as rogue but didnt die as much nor was I as fragile. The range of weapons, the dps and hell you can even have a healing warrior now icon_razz.gif

But still my interests are divided, the pally has changed alot, I wouldnt mind having fun leveling again with the rogue and warrior is just.. warrior icon_razz.gif (good ! )

My first 60 was a warlock, back during the original release when there was one or two per server (ie. before death coil got the buff love). Loved it affliction spec and destruction spec were both great fun, and loved the pets. Didn't do a lot of end-game raiding, mainly just strat / scholo / UBRS - big DPS was fun and easy, just needed to pace myself to not drag aggro.

Second 60 was a priest, fantastic fun - but healing well was hard, especially during MC runs when healing off-tanks while rotating and half the screen was covered in CTRaid stuff. It was so intense, and I really enjoyed it (but it was very one-dimensional - you get over it after a while). Levelling up wasn't too bad, shadow-spec till 60-ish, you didn't need the extra healing talents in the lower end dungeons, face-melting with mind flay left right and centre - awesome in PvP.

Last 60 was a Paladin, great fun, just never died (especially cause I played most of the time with my cousin who was also a paladin - 2 paladins heh, most people we ran into would get bored and hearth out rather than try and fight for the 10 odd minutes it would take to bring us down). end game was pretty much spamming decursive and off-healing, occasionally tanked or main-healed in BRD, and did fine both times with a mainly Holy build.

This was all about patch 1.9 though, only just started playing again!

Warriors are great, they got a lot of buff love before I stopped playing, one of these days I'll dust off a level 40 one I've got lying around somewhere and get serious with him.

Leveling with a buddy (well ur cuz) howd that go?

I wish grinding would be somewhat more fun without it being less productive in a session ie. partying with someone. Solo'ing in WoW is obiovusly the fastest way to level but even with general chat goin on and having convos in gchat or whispering in friends its always most fun to kill and level with a friend i found.

However it doubled ur leveling time kinda, the fact that exp is halved as well lol. So how did it go for you?

Becuase I find if you do all your quests to quick, like someone helping you , you end up finishing all the quests in the area if you partyed with someone while doing it, while being probably a few levels short of what they may have intended, therefore making it harder to do the higher up quests given to you.

Did blizzard intend for people to group to quests like kill this and that, or basically just non-elite quests that you could probably solo?

Great fun, especially cause we were on a PvP server, so places like Stranglethorn Vale, Tanaris, Un'goro Crater among others were a lot safer for us to quest in. Normally we'd look after ourself (seperate pulls, each fighting our own mobs), but staying basically shoulder to shoulder in case we over pulled or needed some help. We could bring down Elites as well without much trouble, normally one of us would tank the other heal.

Worked really well, but to be honest I didn't keep a close eye on the xp/hr rates, always seemed like we were cruising pretty well though. Might be half the xp, but your generally killing twice the mobs and usually faster as well, with a lot less corpse runs.

I was a skinner / herbalist and he was a miner, so were constantly fighting our way to herbs and ore veins as well. Being a skinner is great, makes grinding much more rewarding (especially end-game when you can skin dragon scales and so on). Teamspeak made the biggest difference, especially when co-ordinating hammers of justice, seals and judgments and so on. In PvP 2 people on teamspeak are really hard to beat - plus it's just great fun as well!

yeah, playing WoW even as part of a guild makes the biggest difference.

when i first started playing, i was solo, i really enjoyed playing, but i still didn't really see how it was different to playing any other game except that there were some other people looking for what you were too.

then i got a few RL mates into the game, and we re-rolled to another server, and i suddenly realised the appeal.

we were still newbs at that time, so we didn't really have a complementary selection of classes, just whatever tickled our fancy at the time, but it was fantastic fun, and we made our own shorthand for when we got into PVP encounters (PVP server), such as "HO" whenever i (a hunter) tracked a HumanOid, and i'd ping the map and we'd get them.

we made it to 60 without realising how beneficial instances are (kinda, i didn't do any instance until late 50s.)

we then joined a guild, who had vent, though at the time we didn't have any mics, and only used it for raids.

we were somewhat out of place in that guild, so we rerolled again.

this time, we chose complementary classes, Warrior, Mage, Paladin and Druid, started our own guild and took it from there. had a great bunch of people we ran with, got to end game did some raids before drama took a hold, egos were bruised and people quit. something we weren't personally involved with, but it crushed us regardless.

so, we rerolled again, this time took any class we felt like as well as a few people we now considered friends from the last realm, and were going to stick with PVPing, but ended up being convinced to start another guild for PVE, which we've been happy with and are now progressing through BC.

---
long story short, friends make the game much more fun.

Kikujir0:
was it you who knows my guild's main-tank IRL?
why don't you join us? even if you don't know if you'll play full-time, we have a "Friend" rank specifically for casuals, who are friends of members.
with his endorcement, there shouldn't be an issue getting you an invite.

as for questing vs. grinding / partied vs. solo:
imo, 1-15 or 20, solo is better, but after that partying is much more efficient.
i guess it does depend on your class make-up, 2 DPS characters wipe everything down REALLY quickly, making grinding and questing fly-by.

i don't really know about running out of quests, i really dislike grinding for XP, and have never had a problem with no quests. you might run out of them in a particular zone, but there are several zones for each level-bracket, so move to another one and start questing there.

i find that also alleviates boredom. i rarely stay in one zone for more than a few days.

---
to answer another question, my characters of note have been:
Troll Warrior - first ever toon.
Night Elf Rogue
decided i really don't like Melee based characters
Night Elf Hunter - got to 43 before mates started playing, so rerolled.
- New Server
Orc Hunter - first mount, first 60.
- New Server
Gnome Mage - second 60, first Epic, first epic mount
Human Priest - not really notable except i realised i don't like healers.
- New Server
Gnome Mage - current character - 3rd 60. was going to roll a warlock, but RL mate did, so i went another mage (not a regret, just explaining why i've got 2 level 60 gnome mages). first 70.

guild drama...nothing like logging in and seeing the old faithful grey tabard on again, ending up spending the session trying to figure out what happened, who went where and whose got my stuff from the guild bank heh.

yeah, it sucks.

it was kind of our fault, as we took everything WAY too seriously. learnt from our mistakes with the next guild and joke and laugh and above all, remained casual.

c0ck jokes make guilds fun.

But anyways mroe serious things..

Shit has hit the fan!!! My PW isnt working for some damn reason, I tried the PW retrieval but it wont accept my answers dammit!

What's annoying is they're probably all right and theres probably a missing bracket/hyphon or lower case, Man i have tried so many combinations and have just given up sending a web-form email and a email from the email account.

Any advice on what I can do?

The pw isnt working and it was working earlier today, believe me I checked everything caps, see'ing if the account was typed right and typing 1 letter every 2 seconds. I might have to call that damn overeas 1800 number.

There have been instances in the past where the authentication servers have been down and have returned error messages like yours instead of just saying that they were down. Having said that, you haven't given out your password to anyone or used it to log into any website other than worldofwarcraft.com? It's possible your account was hijacked, but it would be unlikely so try again in a little while and see.

The password recovery system normally works pretty well, try putting in area codes in the phone number section? I used it the other day to get my account back online, but it took me about 5 goes to get it right heh.

I am now a level 9 warrior and I had yet another blast playing this game. I really like it when people pitch in and help each other for the hell of it.

I am totally overwhelmed by the lingo though, I guess it just takes time. Did you guys get confused by the many many terms that are used in this game?

By the way obselete, that movie was very very funny. It may be old, but I am new, so well worth the post icon_smile.gif

I still have a problem with most of the lingo used (not that I'm any high level, but I have been playing on/off for a year..), but you do just pick it up from seeing people use it.

I've never found WoW's community useful until this new server I'm on (Auchdouin or something? Forgot..), where even Alliance players help my blood elf quest.

Managed to score myself a static (dunno what they're called in WoW) though, gonna be hitting RFC later tonight. icon_smile.gif Fairly excited; the high-levelers here'll probably shoot it down but it's my first instance (yeah, I had a 32 rogue, yeah, I never did an instance), so should be cool. I can't remember how badly level differences gimp exp earned though, since I'll be like 2 levels above everyone else... oh well.

I'm gonna thumb through that language guide later (filtered at school), think I need it...
