Hrmmm,
Set up my Wii last night. Plugged it in and was surprised how clean it looked via composite. Thought, hrmm that's not right (thinking I tested my NTSC PS2 over composite the other day and how horride it looked) and reading stories like http://blogs.ign.com/Hil-IGN/2006/11/11/36713/ .
In any case, was running in 576i @ 50 Hz. So I thought, oh, I'll switch it over to 480i @ 60 Hz (thinking it would be better), and suddenly it went to a nasty washed out look. Anyhoo, I use component (480i and 480p) via my PS2 with no problems and it looks fine, so I guess it must be upscale/downscale issue with my TV and 480i.
But, what I was worried about was the 480p option was 'greyed' out. I assume it will become 'available' with a component cable inserted, but can anybody confirm if the PAL Wii's support 480p?
Secondly, games running at 576i @ 50 Hz seem to be full screen. Just wondering if anybody knew if we are actually getting good ports in PAL regions? _________________ Shin J Leon.

When I switched over to 480i it made a huge difference - looks much better. I've had no probs with it.

What monitor are you using? I think my LCD (and others) have problems with 480i @ 60 Hz signals over composite. I think gernally HD TV don't like and scale these signals nicely. But doesn't explain why 576i looks fine.... _________________ Shin J Leon.

In the options, 'screen options'. You can select the desired output signal from 576i 50Hz, 480i 50Hz or EDTV/HDTV (480p). _________________ Shin J Leon.

Assuming you need to have the component cable plugged in, I HOPE! _________________ Shin J Leon.

I'm playing mine on a 42 Inch Plasma SDTV that we got a few years ago. I, too, was surprised how good it looked. I'm running it at 480i 60 hz.

it is because you need component, as composite will not trasfer a progressive signal. But yeah AU wiii supports 480, i am worried about zelda though, because on the back of monkey ball it says EDtv/HDtv meaning 480p i would think.
But on the back of zelda it does not say that? _________________ Samsung 32" LCD

^ Those icons and stuff are confusing. I haven't seen the back of any Wii titles yet, but they should have the table that's on the back of the Xbox/Xbox 360 games (TV 480i 576i EDTV 470p 576p HDTV 720...).

Almost 95% sure the Zelda supports 480p. _________________ Shin J Leon.

I can explain about the 480i problem.
There are three main differences between NTSC and PAL SD: resolution (PAL is better), refresh rate (NTSC is better) and colour system (PAL is MUCH better).
And there are two types of 480i : PAL60 (which is NTSC with PAL colour) and plain NTSC. PAL60 is technically better because it uses the superior PAL colour system. For reference, the Gamecube output PAL60 for 60Hz games and the PS2 output plain NTSC.
Old PAL TVs could often handle the refresh rate of NTSC but not the colour, so they showed it in black and white - but they could dispaly PAL60 fine.
Now - onto our problem. PAL60, while a better format and more compatible then plain NTSC, is a hybrid format and not a standard. Because of this, it sometimes slightly confuses high quality video receivers. Most high quality SD TVs these days have an actual separate tuner for a pure NTSC signal - my TV does, for example. What this means is that it displays an NTSC signal perfectly, exactly as it would appear on an NTSC TV.
However, the PAL60 support is either limited or confusing to the receiver, because (counter intuitively) a pure NTSC signal looks much better then a PAL60 on these types of sets. Because it's got two entire sets of circuitry, when a 60Hz PAL signal is displayed, it switches to NTSC mode and therefore the colour isn't correct, and what you get is the picture an NTSC TV would get if it were running a PAL source. I believe the main problem is that the green colour will be slightly delayed on the screen, causing some slight ghosting, a slight blurry effect and softer colours overall, particularly greens.
So basically, if you're TV is like this, stick to 50Hz, which is higher resolution anyway.
One final note - a component cable will fix the problem entirely, because it separates the colour signals out and neither receiver will have trouble with them. So with component, NTSC, PAL60 and PAL will all look perfect.
Hope this helps everyone!

Hrmm that is interesting.
I have a Samsumg HDTV (LCD), 720p naive display, and I was surprised to see how shockingly bad the 480i @ 60Hz signal was verus 576i @ 50 Hz. I mean, I use component with my US PS2 (480i/480p) and it's fine. Must be because it's a PAL TV hey? _________________ Shin J Leon.

My cousin had a NTSC dvd and when he played it, it was in black and white because the television didn't support it. So it is like you said David.

I had the same problem with the 480i looked awful on my 26" samsung LCD (very blurry indeed). So I have also been using the 50hz 576i mode. Anyway, ive just picked up my component cable set.. and omg. There's a quite huge diff between the two I think. Zelda looks great now, clean & crisp. The wii menu also looks nice now compared to the composite cables.
