What are your top 10 albums of this year? If you can't name that many, just name what you can. Also, they must have been released this year, so I don't want to hear "Oh but I only just heard of this band and got the album last week." NO! That doesn't fly. Also if you wouldn't mind writing why you liked it and how you got into it, etc. Nothing too long, please.
My picks are, in no particular order:
Dan Kelly and the Alpha Males - Drowning In The Fountain Of Youth
[This album was featured on triple J a few months back, and I caught one of their shows. I got this album yesterday, and it's fantastic. The lyrics get you thinking a lot]
Bertie Blackman - Black
[What artist doesn't have an album titled 'Black'? Bertie has a beautiful voice, layered with some nice rock sounds. Released a few weeks ago]
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Me Your Bones
[Gets a fair spin on triple J. In case you hadn't noticed, most of the bands I am introduced to are from triple J]
Underoath - Define the Great Line
[Sort of Emo Metal. Not something I would usually listen to, but strangely enough, I have thrashed this album many-a-time in the mornings getting ready for work.]
The Kooks - Inside In, Inside Out
[Every single one of these songs are hits in my books. Great pop rock]
The Butterfly Effect - Imago
[Brilliant album. I got this on the release day so I could quickly learn al the lyrics before they toured... I still haven't seen them play ]
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
[I was a huge Pearl Jam fan for several years up until late last year. I was sick of waiting or them to tour, and waiting for this new album. When it was finally released in May, it blew my socks off. Brilliant Rock. I wish people would stop bagging them for not making a better album since their debut album, cause this was excellent.]
The Bronx
[Great Punk stuff from L.A (contrary to their name). Makes you scream at the top of your lungs. With song names like "transsexual blackout" and "**** zombie", how could it not be good?]
Protest the Hero - Kezia
[I heard one of their songs late one night on Rage. Several months later I still had the mental image of that night watching that clip, loving it to death. So I tracked it down and got the album. Takes a few listens to appreciate it, but it's great Metal stuff.]
The Zutons - Tired of Hangin Around
[Get's a fair spin on triple J. Lovin it.]
Well there you have it. Notice no Audioslave, Mars Volta, Muse, Strokes, or any other big guns? Well I did. They weren't far off though.

I'm actually trying to remember what I've bought or listened to this year that was also released this year The only ones that come to mind, mainly because I still listen to them, are:
Strapping Young Lad - The New Black
It's no City or Alien, but it doesn't need to be because it's a fun record akin to Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing.
Das Ich - Cabaret
Yet another unique sounding album from DI. A tiny bit of a step down in terms of creativity compared to their previous work, but still very enjoyable.
The Devin Townsend Band - Synchestra
Yeah, it's another album from Devin. But this one is definately a keeper. Get in to this argument with a Devin nut: the song Pixellate is better than Earth Day _________________

Only got a couple
Blackholes and Revelations - Muse
Took a few listens, but this album is great, really hoping they will come to Perth.
Lights and Sounds - Yellowcard
First one for the year, very solid the whole way through.
Imago - The Butterfly Effect
Saw it, bought it and was like wow, good decision, shame all their shows here were 18 +
Stadium Arcadium - RHCP
Has some good songs, but really should of been one disc with some of the lesser songs cut.
Thats all I got from this year. _________________

i'm also struggling to think of 10 albums that were released this year, and of those i can remember, i'm struggling to find some worth mentioning.
Muse - Blackholes and Revelations.
seems to be very hit and miss amongst fans. i love it though, and can't wait for them to tour again (supposedly the BDO).
Tool - 10,000 Days
also seemed hit and miss. i don't really know why. anyway, i really like it, and also hope the rumours of a BDO appearance is true.
Audioslave - Revelations
not really much to say, they're getting into their own groove now, rather than being "simply" a mix of Soundgarden and RATM. another BDO Rumour hopeful.
The Butterfly Effect - Imago
great album. unfortunately missed their WA tour.
here is where i struggle to remember any other releases from the year.
The Streets - The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living
Lily Allen - Alright Still
love both these albums. no real reason really, just like them.
Rob Zombie - Educated Horses.
is Rob, is good.
AFI - Decemberunderground.
can't think of any more albums i've bought from this year, so it's kinda on here by default. not really that good an album imo. _________________

I left out Tool intentionally. For a five year delay from their previous album, they really didn't do anywhere near enough to differentiate it from Lateralus (ie if you held up Lateralus and Ænema together, there's a huge difference). I also got tired pretty quickly of notes being played out of beat solely because they could.
I bought Muse's album on release, but I really haven't listened to it all that much.
Slayer's new album is loltastic. _________________

i'm not saying you HAVE to like Tool, but for me it was:
I like Lateralus (one of my favourite albums of all time)
10,000 Days is similar to Lateralus in style.
QED i like 10,000 Days
i'm not saying it's the best album ever, but it certainly beats a lot of the trash that's come out this year. _________________

I'm not saying I don't like them I'm saying that, with Ænema being one of the first albums I ever bought, I've come to expect more from a band that I still listen to after ten years.
Got The Killers' new album Sam's Town tonight. Not bad actually. Needs more listening. _________________

I haven't really heard many '06 albums in full, in fact, I don't even think I've heard enough for a top 10.
Borknagar - Origin
Caught me off guard by releasing a folk album, with no metal insight.
Satyricon - Now, Diabolical
Not a patch on the Satyricon of old, but you've gotta respect them for pushing the boundaries of Black Metal.
The Gathering - Home
A bit of a disappointment. Released by anyone else it'd be a great album, but since it's The Gathering, it's merely a good album. Still has some great tunes though.
Lacuna Coil - Karmacode
Although undoubtedly their most commercial album, I think it's also probably now my favourite of theirs. The Depeche Mode cover is fucking awesome!
Bal-Sagoth - The Chthonic Chronicles
Pompous, epic Black/Battle Metal at it's best.
Zyklon - Disintegrate
Hated it at first, but slowly grew on me over time. Although pretty simplistic when compared to the two previous albums, it still has a nice post-apocalyptic overtone going on.
Psycroptic - Symbols of Failure
Just great crushing technical Death Metal. Pity about the complete lack of guitar solos though. _________________ SIGNATURE REMOVED - Luke

I've only listened to Psycroptic from Gmomey_g's list. It wasn't too bad from what I remember.
I'm definately adding The Killer's Sam's Town to my list, as well as Eagles Of Death Metal - Death By Sexy. _________________

Death By Sexy was boring as hell. I only liked Boy's Bad News, the rest were so mediocre it wasn't funny.
Add:
Midlake - Trials of Van Occupanther
...to the list

Top 10
1. Lawrence Arms - Oh! Calcutta!
2. Butterfly Effect - Imago
3. Deadsy - Phantasmagore
4. Samiam - Whatever's Got You Down
5. The Draft - In A Million Pieces
6. Matisyahu - Youth
7. The Falcon - Unicornography
8. Plus 44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating
9. Muse - Black Holes & Revelations
10. The Killers - Sam's Town
Has been a very average year in music, all the big releases fell short of what i expected (killers, rhcp, muse, tool, afi, deftones). A few albums suprised me and were pretty good (augie march, billy talent, heavens). Some good albums that didnt make it (meatloaf, me first and the gimme gimmes, placebo, stone sour) and a couple of live albums rocked pretty hard (against me! and flogging molly).

The Strokes - First Impression Of Earth
The Killers - Sam's Town
Placebo - Meds
Those are all the albums I've bought for 2006, I'm thinking of getting Eskimo Joe Black Fingernails Red Whine and Plus 44 (the other Blink 182 spin off).
Any recommendations for other CDs for a Rock, Alternative Rock and Punk Rock fan? _________________

The Exploders.
I just bought that album today, and it fucking rocks. It's like Vintage rock with clever hooks and wicked guitars layered over the top.
Oh and Retroman you're not getting the point of this thread. It's not "what song are you listening to."
I'll post all the albums I have purchased this year when I can be half arsed.

Eskimo Joe - Black Fingernails, Red Wine
The Mars Volta - Amputecture
Placebo - Meds
The Butterfly Effect - Imago
