Was just cruising along on Yahoo and came across this:

Quote:
The creators of the South Park cartoon series are unrepentant about a new episode that shows Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin attending a party in Hell with a stingray barb protruding from his chest.

Irwin died just eight weeks ago when a stingray barb pierced his heart as he was filming off the north Queensland coast.

The South Park episode, which had been scheduled for broadcast in the US on Wednesday, is expected to upset Irwin fans and his family - wife Terri and children Bindi and Bob.

But the show's creators say it's not the first time their work has created waves.

"We have offended people in the past and probably will again," a South Park spokesman a London newspaper.

"We know that regular watchers will not be shocked."

In the episode, Satan hosts a fancy dress party attended by Irwin, Princess Diana, Adolf Hitler and other famous dead people.

But Irwin is kicked out by the Devil because he's not in costume.

Britain's media watchdog has labelled the episode distasteful.

"This is such bad taste and the makers of South Park should review their decision to show it," watchdog John Beyer said.

"Steve's family are still grieving.

"To lampoon somebody's death like that is unacceptable and so soon after the event is grossly insensitive."

Just curious to see what people think of this. South Park is a pretty controversial show but it seems people hardly ever criticise it because they excecute the parodies so well.

Are the South Park crew going a bit to far? Or are we being too serious?

I'll comment more on it later-but it's far too soon.Jesus the poor bastard's name and face are still fresh in everyone's mind.I realise they are doing it for shock value but cmon guys, if it was someone close to you(relative etc) you would at least wan't a decent amount of time to have past before mocking such a man.

Distasteful in the extreme.

Yes, it is very distasteful.

That said, I have watched the scene, and they didn't appear to make fun of the man in any particular way - he more or less just stood there.

But, yes, it was way too soon... if it even had to be done at all...

How about thinking of it another way?

The guy has made such an impact and is so well known that people have started to parody him on the other side of the world. Last week I was presented with another such case of Irwin being used in an apparently "distasteful" manner, this time in a rap song.

Gangsta rap feud goes from shock to Irwin croc tactics

I look at it as a positive. Making light of a situation sometimes helps people with grief. Some of you are waaaaaaay too sensitive.

I haven't seen the episode, but I have seen the clips they've shown on the news and read the synopsis of that part, and basically the South Park creators acknowledge that the joke is 'too soon'. They don't say anything negative or in bad taste about Steve at all, anyway (unless you count the fact he's in hell, but so are people like Princess Diana, and, in fact, in the South Park universe, Saddam Hussein is in heaven, so perhaps its a complement of sorts that Steve went to hell?)

I think people need to get over it, though. In fact, I'd hazard a guess that based on Steve's fun-loving, outgoing personality that he probably would have had a laugh at the joke too.

I'm all for offensive stuff if it's funny (see Borat) but I just don't see how this is funny.

Agreed. Totally.
I watched the episode on Friday night and the scene only goes for about 30seconds - and it actually starts because (at a fancy dress party) people are complaining that someone is dressed up as Irwin and that it's too soon, etc. It's easy to do something along the lines of 'Irwin died ha ha ha' for the sake on controversy, but something else altogether to be able to touch on the issue in a funny way while maintaining some form of class (which IMO they managed to do).

It just irks me when reading things along the lines of "I really like South Park but they went to far by... blah blah blah" - that's right up there with the line "I'm not a racist, but..."
I just don't like the way people pick and mix the kind of offensive humour that is 'acceptable'. Either you see what they do for what it is, and let it pass without making a fuss - or you can start complaining and run the risk of looking a hypocrit.

My 2 cents, anyway.

It's south park. It's an offensive show. Half the s**t they have on it could be considered 'distasteful'. I don't see anything wrong with it tbh.

^ Agree completely. This is the show that takes the piss out of Jesus of all people. Those watching the show know what they are in for. That said, I agree with Spanca also, that Steve's inclusion in the show wasn't exectuted that well and I didn't find it very funny.

EDIT: Spelling.

I just saw the clip. If you're gonna be offensive and push people's buttons, at least make it damn funny. I used Borat as an example above, and he does it brilliantly. South Park often do too, but this clip honestly isn't that funny (if at all) so what's the point of pissing people off if you can't even get a laugh?

Perhaps because humour, like most damn near anything else, is entirely subjective? Just because it isn't your cup of tea doesn't make it universally bad.

^ i'm in the same boat as you, i was sick of hearing about by the night he died, and now i read in the paper that Bindi is releasing a fitness dvd.

it's all well and good people claiming that people are using his name/image for shock value, what about his own damn family exploiting the sympathy his death has garnered?

as you might guess, i'm not offended. if anything, i'm indifferent to it.

LMAO! Is that for real? Thats crazy. Well they have been through a rough time, they have to get some benefit over it all - dont they?

I myself love South Park I think the creators are very smart and they are able to pull of alot of things other shows would get into serious strife for. Im actually surprised they were able to come back on tv. But I mean Michael Jackson and other celebreties deserved to be mocked because there 'evil' icon_razz.gif Cant they make humor without having to offend so many people? Like take for instance Family Guy - I know it has its moments but it takes a more simpsons like approach to comedy.

South Park seems to be getting pretty dodgy recently, I mean compared to the first seasons and everything..

Because Steve Irwin was an International Ambassador for Australia - Peter Brock may have been a Household name to us - But he was only really a Local Hero - I strongly doubt anybody outside of the country would know who he was - And the fact that there was International Grief over Steve pretty much ranked higher in importance with the media.

I think if millions of people are capable of actually crying over one guy dying for weeks on end just because he was famous, I think that people can also have a laugh at the issue too. I'm sick of how people worship these goddamned celebrities so much. Millions die every day, yet when a guy that was on TV dies, everyone has a spill. No offence, but get over it.

Oh he was well known worldwide, it's just that it was only really the Motorsport world that was affected by his death. Peter was a great person for many things but as you say, it was more the local stuff than worldwide and as such, he didn't have the priority that Irwin did for the media.

I don't want this to turn into a social psychology debate, but the average person will form a very shallow, but equally present, bond with someone they see every day on TV entertaining them. You can't really compare it to the millions that die from poverty etc., 'cause people generally aren't as emotionally effected when they don't know who it is who's died (note: I don't necessarily agree).

I voted no; as has been said, the style and meaning of his inclusion was very fitting... can't see any reason to get upset by it.
