Actually, others have said very different things about motorstorms realtime reality:

So now we're getting to the interesting part of our show. Remember that awesome Motorstorm video they showed at E3 2005? Yeah, well, it turns out there was no way that was gameplay. But then again, it looked like a Pixar movie gone mad. Still, it was a bit disappointing to see Motorstorm in action with our intro to that game so impressive (and so questionably realistic).

Once you get past that, you can definitely appreciate Motorstorm. The first thing we saw was a real-time gameplay demo of a buggy. The buggy looked good, but this is where disappointment kind of set in. It sort of looked... eh. It's a work-in-progress though, but we couldn't help but think Smuggler's Run... at least, until they started showing off what makes the title sweet.

As the buggy made its curves around this massive mud field, you could see how the tires would carve into the ground, wet mud kicking up. The mud actually didn't look all that good as it kicked up, but the carves looked fantastic and realistic. They even slowed the buggy down and showed how each tire moved independently when going over these curves. Great stuff!

Then it was a video of more gameplay, but this time on a motorbike. The motorcycle would really get into the dirt and mud, and then came a very cool part. They jetted over to a RV and spun the wheels, kicking up mud. The wet mud slapped onto the face of the bigger vehicle, and they mentioned that you could even see it would dry completely on the vehicle.

Great effects and an overall sweet looking engine made Motorstorm look exciting. While we're still shaking the E3 2005 mud from our eyes, it's good to see that there's a solid looking foundation for what could be a sweet gam.

There aren't any yet, so all we can really do is rely on 1st hand reports from the GDC.

I guess they may have referred to it looking similar to E3, however not as polished. I read it up also on IGN, but it was also noted at GDC that the build they showed at GDC was one from December, so it just may be an earlier build without all the polish.
