I think Namco said at one point that US/PAL audiences were uninterested in the "older" sprite based Tales Of games, preferring to release the 3D games to the US market. Same reason none of the Super Robot Wars games will ever get released outside Japan (All sprite based).

Famous last words I'm afraid, 2 of the SRW games just got announced for western release icon_razz.gif
A more accurate statement would be that the 2d ones don't get released on consoles, but don't do too bad on handhelds.

Has anyone played Lunar Genesis on DS? I've begun playing it and I'm really not impressed. Please tell me it gets better or shall i return it?

Ah, OG and OG2.

OG2 is supposed to be very good graphics wise (Well, for a GBA game anyway), although I think the licenced mechs are what makes SRW fun. Still, worth a look, as long as the translation doesn't totally suck.

Reading reviews I can sadly tell you it doesn't.

I bet the licensing maze for getting a "normal" SRW game translated would be crazy, I think bandai gets game+model rights which allow them to make them in Japan, that wouldn't extend to the west.

Grandia 3 update: Horrors! 2 of the characters have left the party 9 hours in, and it's the only 2 decent ones! I'm stuck with Boy, Bimbo and Dragonboy now. It has also turned into cutscene hell, about 2/3 of the time seems to be cutscenes as opposed to, y'know... game. Shadow hearts 3 is out soon, I think Grandia 3 is being shelved for now icon_sad.gif

Very true, Bandai holds a massive monopoly in Japan over many, many anime series, just wouldn't feel the same without say, Nelly Brain (Brain Powered) kicking seven bells out of Providence Gundam (Gundam SEED).

Maybe thats just me.

EDIT: For clarity

I originally read this as "Seven Balls". This made your screenshot much more painful. I tried playing a translation of a SRW game, but I had no idea who 95% of the people or mecha were, which made it all a bit pointless. At least with an original game they would do a bit of character establishment.

I'm sorry I know i'm a little late... but anyways:

PERSONA 3 ANNOUNCED
Only in japan so far, but if Ghostlight survives long enough they might bring us this one after the DDS series. God bless the MegaTen universe icon_biggrin.gif
It starts off a bit artsy and trippy... the latter half shows some gameplay.

Trailer:

Also, FFXII has been the first Final Fantasy to ever receive a 40/40 from Famitsu magazine. Can't wait!

Persona is awesome, but I suspect the "Gun to head" summoning thing will be controversial in the US. Hopefully this won't stop a translation.

I have officially given up on Grandia 3, Radiata stories is much better. It picks up a lot after the 2nd mission, half the game isn't available until then! It's mostly about funny cutscenes and recruiting the 150+ characters.

FFXII opening movie/new game and load game screen.

No spoilers, fairly short. It's the little movie that plays before the new game screen comes up. It's not the intro.

I only had space for one save game for my RPG (Radiata Stories) and it was fine for the first 30 hours, but now I've missed a bunch of stuff and can't go back icon_cry.gif

Usually I go for 2 alternating saves, or a save at the beginning of a section and a continuing one, is this what other people do?

^i just keep one game saved and it usually comes back to haunt me like you EH. I'm a huge fan of 'save state' and quite often I save it right at a time where I will die....doh!

two saves is a smart way of doing things, but why would you want to backtrack on an old save because you missed stuff? I can't stand having going so far then reverting back to a save, it's so annoying.

^ 4 saves for me, I just save it one after another.
eg reach save point: save one
reach second save point : save 2
etc etc
until I finish all 4 & then I save on save 1 on the next point I save at.

In radiata stories a lot of the point of the game is recruiting as many of the 170 odd characters as you can, but there are "chapters" and once you've started one you have a limited time to recruit certain people, or they're lost forever, and other characters are then made unrecruitable as a result also...

The summary is that I'm slightly obsessive about doing all the interesting stuff in a game, so it sucks when I miss something cool and can't go back. Usually it's only 15-20 minutes of replaying once or twice in a 30+ hour playthrough.

i try to play games through for the first time without walkthroughs. when i finished, i will check for things to look out for in the 2nd time through and all that. although i do get the shits with some games and just want to finish them...wind waker can go to hell!

i also got the shits in shadow of the colossus and checked how to beat bosses on several occasions. i wish i hadn't though...

That works for people with time, but I can't afford to play RPGs twice lately so I usually check secret guides on gamefaqs for stuff I would otherwise have missed. I avoid main plot walkthroughs like the plague tho, that removes the point of playing an RPG...

Shame about SotC! Sometimes you need to sleep on it if you get stuck icon_smile.gif

I quite liked Lunar Legend actually, especially some of the horrible translations...always good for a laugh icon_lol.gif It took a while to get into but it was a pretty decent game in the end.

I think I have 6 saves (Currently) for Tales of the Abyss:

1 - Generic "cool-bit-in-storyline" save 1
2 - Generic "cool-bit-in-storyline" save 2
3 - "Save-at-last-save-point" - Is updated whenever I feel like finishing the game again.
4 - Current Save - My level up file, for finishing sub-quests and levelling my characters more.
5 - New Game+ data - Updated whenever I clear the last boss for the hell of it
6 - New Game+ (Will overwrite later)

This doesn't compare to the 15-20 I had for FFX though.

It didn't look too interesting to me, a bit system-heavy (instead of story)

In other RPG news, Tri-ace has announced they're making a 360 RPG, but... nothing else. Could be a new Star Ocean? At least it might make the 360 a more interesting system for RPG gamers than the Xbox, which had only a couple of OK RPGs.
