PSP PlayStation Store open for business

PSP News | Full games available for purchase, too.
After much speculation and a rather long wait, the PSP's version of the PlayStation Store has opened. While many expected that the store would have the same PlayStation games available as the PS3's store, we were surprised this morning to find that full versions of PSP titles are available for purchase; Beats for $AU12.95, Go! Puzzle for $AU8.45, B-Boy and Fired Up for $AU29.95 and Go! Sudoku for $AU23.95. The US version of the store has a wider range of titles, including Wipeout Pure and Gangs of London, so we could expect more games to come in the future.

The PlayStation Store on the PSP works much like it does on the PlayStation 3 - your existing PlayStation Store account is fully compatible. The difference at the moment is that the PlayStation Store for the PSP needs to be accessed via PC - you can't just download straight to the handheld. Sony has provided a program for helping users copy their content over to the PSP - unfortunately, it doesn't work on Macs or Windows 2000, so some users may be out of luck. Firmware version 3.70 or higher is required to play content from PlayStation Store.

It's great to see Sony finally spread PlayStation Network content over to the PSP - let's hope that they continue the good work.

I just downloaded Beats, and it comes highly recommended for music-rhythm game fans.

It's your standard DDR type fare (press buttons in time with the music), but you can use any MP3 on your memory stick - the game analyses the MP3 and determines when to prompt you to press a particular button. The timing isn't 100% perfect, but it's hard to describe how much more satisfying it is to pick the tunes from your own music library.
