LGC 07: Sony reveal Go!Messenger

PSP News | Sony's answer to MSN?
Sony have revealed at their press conference at the Leipzig convention that they will be bringing a new messaging application to the PSP console called Go!Messenger. The application will apparently allow PSP owners to communicate with each other over any wireless internet connection and will be made available for free via a firmware upgrade which places an icon on the PSP's XMB (XrossMediaBar), allowing users to download and install the Go!Messenger application separately on a memory stick.

Go!Messenger won't just be used for text-based messages however, as it's also been confirmed that it will support voice chat and voice messaging, although the user will require a headset to implement the function. Additionally, the PSP's Go!Cam will be taken advantage of and will allow users to partake in video calls as well as leave video messages to friends and family.

“With Go!Messenger, PSP is pushing new boundaries, adding unique communication functionalities to all the existing multimedia experiences,” said Stephane Hareau, PSP European Marketing Manager, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “Enabling more than 8.5 Million PSP users across the SCEE region to communicate with each other, through Video or Voice chat, truly confirms the always evolving nature and potential of PSP."

Go!Messenger is currently expected to launch across all PAL regions in January 2008. We'll report back once more information becomes available.

Would be nice if it interfaced with aim / msn / yahoo messenger although text messaging would kind of be a bit difficult.

Keyboard peripheral announcement imminent? I hope so otherwise this will be quite the mole to navigate through...

Even with pre-existing phrases to choose from (If that's an option)

great idea, they should also move this application to the ps3, since the eyetoy with build in microphone and allow psp users to communicate with those who are ps3 (maybe some extra options with disable people from receiving calls when they are in game.) do this and integrate it with the current IM that sony have going and they might start to get somewhere, transfer your friends from PS3 to the PSP if the people of course have the software/psp to start with.

still, its looking good and interesting, whether it'll take off will be another question.

Oh, and great idea for PSP.

Good idea, but it just won't take off.

Not a bad idea, I just dont see the headset working though.

I second the keyboard notion. Its a royal pain in the ass to use the PSP's virtual keyboard.

i wouldn't have a clue how a keyboard attatchment would work on a psp, where could it possibly go since its designed for both sides to sit in your hands.

Im thinking more of a wireless system. Someone has actually made a piece of homebrew code that allows one to use this Palm Pilot infrared keyboard setup with their PSP..

Or if power is an issue, then it could be simple to have a miniature keyboard that is not physically attached to the PSP and plugs into the top Mini B port of the unit. One could sit the PSP up in something like the Logitech Playgear Pocket case and type to their heart's content.
