God of War Chains of Olympus images released

PSP News | They may impress.
Sony has released the latest images of the upcoming God of War: Chains of Olympus, which is coming to the PSP. We are talking about the PSP of course, yet when you cast your eyes over to the Media Panel we wouldn't be at all surprised if you mistook the game for either a PlayStation 2 or even a Wii title.

Chains of Olympus is the debut for the God of War franchise on the PSP. Details on the game are extremely scarce, but it seems the title will be a prequel to God of War. We'll provide more details once we get them.

Damn!! icon_eek.gif That game looks real good for a PSP title.

Having played through God of war 1 and recently God of war 2 it looks I may have to buy a PSP just for this game, and it's a prequel too which will be awesome to see kratos's past(I won't go any further in case of spoilers)
But I can't wait to see..well I'm sure you know what I mean where I want to see if you have played the original. icon_wink.gif

Jeepers - that looks absolutely amazing.

Will it be a system seller?

Almost - as good a game as God of War is, it hasn't yet got the brand name recognition that a Gran Turismo or Metal Gear Solid has, let alone monster names like Mario, Zelda, GTA and Halo.

However if the game looks as good moving as it does in the still pictures AND the console drops to $199 in Australia, then I think you will see people picking it up on an impulse purchase.

And isnt this game going to come out in 2007?? Thats not long to wait at all!

I can understand the idea of releasing high-res screens to show off the quality of the assets being used, but it's just going to make me a tiny bit dissapointed when actually seeing all the jaggies that'll appear on the PSP screen. Other than that slight whinge, this is looking really impressive! It's about damned time that something really pushed the PSP hardware like this.

Can't wait.

Looks hot! Can't imagine the game will be too long though, but still gives me a reason to turn on the PSP.

Aside from the main quest - Im hoping for an extended quest of the gods mode - i think that would work really well on the handheld.

I'm doubtful that those are real Psp screens (usually they're quite jaggy) but i'm hyped for it none-the-less.

God of War really has become one of my favourite franchises (2nd only to Resident Evil). I think the stories rival Hollywood productions and the actual production value of the titles are some of the highest in biz imo. I LOVE IT!

Is sux how only U.S/Canadian residents are allowed to sign up for the demo.

I too was quite shocked at the anti-aliased screens, but you know if ANYONE can do it, then it would be Sony Santa Monica together with the Ready at Dawn the team that made Daxter on the PSP.

Speaking of which, I just checked the Daxter screens, and they do look mighty fine, but jaggies do exist, although the developers did say they were only on about 25% of the PSP's potential power, so make of that what you will.

The PSP screen size is 480×272, these screenshots are just high-res ones. The actual game will not be anywhere near as smooth looking I'd say.

(not to say that it won't look fantastic though)

Yea I read that interview aswell. I hear it's basically 1 guy that is in charge of all the animations...which is quite a feat.

It's just that those screens don't look to Psp scale....like it looks like a screenshot from a TV because the scope of those screens seem so huge. Like in the 1st pic Kratos would be quite small on the Psp screen if the camera was pulled back so far. In any case....it's not like it's a Ps2/3 games so it has to be on Psp hardware.

I have complete faith it will be a good game....i'm just hoping they manage to somehow squeeze some FMV on there (please please please please!!)....I don't care if it means not having any other features/unlockables.

Any GoW is a killer app imo so yes this will get me buying a PSP on release.

The PSP is starting to come into its own. GoW, MGS, Ratchet, Daxter and a few others that people rave about (including Katamari, LocoRoco).

I guess this mean I'll be picking up a PSP sometime in the future. That's a killer app right there.

As for the jaggies, would they even be noticeable on a screen the size of the PSP's? I remember watching the trailer for the game and not noticing any, so that'd be indicative of the final build right? I'll call bullshot for now but I'm keeping my finger crossed for this kind of fidelity in the retail release.

Regardless, I think theres little doubt that once it's out, this will most likely be the best looking game on the PSP. And once it's out I'll most likely own a PSP. Now there's something I never thought would happen!

Unless they can push some serious AA while maintaining a steady framerate, then very much so - jaggies are worse at low res. than at high res. right? Is there a trailer out with a decent look at gameplay yet? I only recall a short teaser trailer?

When in doubt, check Gametrailers icon_wink.gif

Two clips, one of combat and the other a boss battle. They both look amazing. I'm stunned by the sense of scale in the combat clip, with a sea of ships firing flaming projectiles into a fully rendered city. I never thought that would have been possible on a hand held, not to mention at such a stable frame rate. Given this isn't even final code yet, the mind boggles.

I recommend downloading the clips. The quality is much better and I swear it's being antialiased. It continues to impress.

Dang those screens look pretty darn fine. Man I am SO happy that I didn't sell my PSP. I reckon I'm going to end up with more PSP games then PS2 games.

You're right Cap, that video footage looks freakin' awesome icon_biggrin.gif
Which leads me into this question: Why has everything else on the PSP up until this sucked so hard? It really does most other PSP games to shame; I suppose that the God of War games have a reputation in that regard though.

I think one reason is the perception was that the processing power was somewhere between the PS1 and PS2. Therefore alot of developers saved themselves the trouble by just writing some really quick code that they knew would work. Keep in mind that the PSP was a totally brand new machine, and we know these days that publishers are mindful of investing in anything that does not make a return on their investment. That's why there were so many sequels and ports on the PSP, because the userbase was not there and also because all the art and code could be brought over from the PS2 games in reduced form.

Two games that spring to mind immediately are Need for Speed Underground Rivals and Winning Eleven/Pro Evo Soccer.

In NFS, the game had some of the most shocking car models for quite some time. They looked more like boxes than anything. No one cared cause it was at launch and they didnt know any better.

Pro Evo Soccer didnt have a master league, some may call it lazy, but it definitely would have cut down testing time, for people to actually play through the game, thereby saving them a lot of money.

Not surprisingly its taken a God of War game, to show people what standards gamers expect these days. While no one's played the game yet, the spectacular nature of the graphics suggest this isnt a half assed job.
