PSP price slashed in Europe

PSP News | Getting ever closer to price of DS.
Sony has announced that the PSP will be getting a new price point in the coming days in the UK and Europe. From Friday May 4, the handheld will drop from £149.99 (AU$375) to £129.99 (AU$313) in the United Kingdom, and to €169.99 (AU$277) in the rest of Europe. The new price brings the cost of a PSP to within £30 (AU$75) of a Nintendo DS in the UK, and to within €30 (AU$50) of a European DS.

"PSP is unique and is constantly evolving. It offers the widest palette of mobile entertainment, from gaming to video, music, photos and internet," said SCE UK director Ray Maguire. "But now the exciting possibility of connecting remotely to PS3 makes PSP more relevant than ever. So what better time to offer a brand new price point?"

There'll also be a selection of new titles joining the budget Platinum range on the portable console, with Ridge Racer 2, Moto GP, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, Killzone: Liberation, and LocoRoco all now going for a paltry £14.99 (AU$36). Some excellent titles there, and well worth fifteen notes apiece.

We've spoken to Sony Australia about a potential price drop and while it isn't on the cards yet, the company is monitoring the current market.

Is this the value or giga pack? icon_confused.gif I still wouldn't pay even this price for the value pack...

Agreed, I wonder what the price cut will be here?

Either way it shows that sony has pulled their finger our and have contemplated cutting prices for consoles, lets hope this trend will follow onto the ps3 so that users can enjoy a well made console which doesnt fry and still offers great graphics.

I doubt we'll get much of a price drop here in Aus, but good to see Sony dropping the price. It was a nice unit when it was released but I just felt the price of the games were too much

Too little, too late IMO.

Nice one, price drops are always good in my books. The PSP could really benefit from having a price in-line with the DS, makes the choice for budget concious gamers a little less cut and dry.

Also, Killzone Liberation going for cheap? I think I'll indulge myself with that, the demo seemed pretty solid.

I'm not that surprised since the PSP Media Manager bundle received a price drop from $388 down to $344 a number of days ago at JB Hi-Fi. I, myself have been thinking of picking one up since the price of the PSP Base Pack hasn't moved yet.

Whats the deal with the media manager? i thought it was just some software that sony has made to make life easier for those who dont know how drag and drop music files into he MUSIC folder on the psp?

Wow they're lowering the price and releasing more platinum games. Now all we need is to stop retailers from selling the platinum games for $60 still. Stupid retailers.

retailers are not to blame most of the time Vervain, if they do not get
price protection then how do they manage a price drop? sell it below what they paid for it?

For once I actually DO think it is the retailers fault though. I know that usually it is the developers fault and all that but when it's a platinum game with the platinum cover I doubt Sony tell them ,"Sell this for $60. It doesn't matter if it was this price before it even went platinum," the thing is that the games BEFORE they went platinum had a price and now the platinum editions seem to have the SAME price at most retailers and platinum editions have always been cheaper than the original price.

Wow, the DS sure is expensive in Europe.

If this happened in aus, depending on the pack-in stuff, I'd seriously consider getting a PSP (LocoRoco is mocking me).

Nope it isn't happening here in Australia any time soon. The head of Sony Australia released a statement that they're not reducing the price although they are going to look at market growth or something along those lines and make a decision at a later date. Or something like that anyway.

Yeah; thats exactly what it is. Basically lets you move stuff on and off the MemoryStick with minimal fuss. Definately not worth paying for as you can do pretty much everything this program does by yourself. The only instance that Media Manager for the PSP is suitable is for the younger kids who dont easily understand how to shift content on and off the PSP. Back in my EB days, we'd get hundreds of calls from shy little kids not knowing how the hell they can put a video file onto the PSP. Sony have nerve actually peddling this program for a price.

As for the price drop, the Sony rep should really be saying "Sony are currently really desperate when it comes to the Playstation Portable being a viable revenue tool. The Nintendo DS is kicking our ass in sales and gives us nightmares every time we close our eyes, so we figure we'll factor in some of the 'common folk' so we can obtain deeper market penetration in Europe, because God.. we're suffering here..".

Why the price drop isnt being considered here in Australia? Because Sony are milking it for all it's worth. Its a common fact that the cost of gaming is ridiculously over-inflated in Australia and New Zealand for no credible reason.

Yeah, I've already got a psp but i'm abit upset that they have decided not to include a price cut down here sine we are apart of the pal region and it seems that everywhere else in this pal region are getting it as well (sorry nz, your stuck with us >.>)

i just hope they pull their finger out so that they can get some sales under their belt and start to show how the psp can be intergrated with the ps3.
