MTX Mototrax Review

PSP Review | The ultimate MX title?
If you like MX titles then there isn't a huge selection on the PSP. Last April THQ released MX vs. ATV Unleashed, which was good but had a few issues. Released in America during June last year, Activision has finally released MTX Mototrax in PAL territories - the good news about the wait is the fact that the game has been released at a budget price point. MTX Mototrax is hard to fault and as such it's highly recommended for those who are keen for another MX title.

The main gameplay option in MTX Mototrax is the MTX career. You'll begin the career mode by customising your rider. You can customise you rider's street outfit and racing outfit as well as the look of his face. Whilst the customisation options aren't as deep as in a title like Tiger Wood's PGA Tour 07 there are still quite a few details you can modify. After you've created your player you will find out that you're a rookie trying to work your way up. You can launch straight into an event or you can head to Travis Pastrana's compound for a tutorial. When you're ready you can jump into a race event.

There are five different categories of race events: supercross, motocross, free ride, freestyle and MTX racing. In the free ride events you drive around completing certain objectives as you wish. These events are quite enjoyable as you can just ride around practicing tricks. The freestyle events take place in a smaller area with a bundle of jumps, you can attempt any of the objectives at any time. The supercross and motorcross events are tournaments with four different races, you'll be awarded points based on your finishing position for each race, with the aim being to come first at the end of the tournament. The MTX series is much the same as the motocross and supercross events but there are more tracks in each tournament.

As you progress through the game sponsors will sign up to help you. You'll win races as you win events and with this money you can purchase new bikes. You'll start off with a 125CC motorbike but as you win you'll get more powerful bikes. Some events will require you to own a bike with a specific amount of power too, so you can't just power through the game with the one motorbike. You can also purchase gear from a manufacturer who sponsors you. All in all, the entire career mode in the game is surprisingly in-depth.

If you want a break from the career mode then there is also a Dirt Wurx track builder in the game. The track builder is one of the easiest we’ve come across and you can add parts of the track and rotate sections easily, at any stage you can also test out your track to see if it plays as good as it looks. If you’re still in the mood for customisation then you can also edit your rider in the custom rider option or even create another rider.

There is an exhibition mode in the game too, which is great if you’re just wanting to race without requirements. You can race with your created track in exhibition mode as well as race in a single race, free ride, freestyle or on a MTX racing track. There is a ghost mode too and in the ghost mode you can record your fastest time and then race against your ghost.

MTX Mototrax also features multiplayer support through ad-hoc. Up to four players can compete against each other in a multiplayer game. The host of the multiplayer games has a wide variety of race options including game type, level, number of laps, number of players and whether collisions are turned on or off. It's a little bit disappointing that the game doesn't support game share at all, but as the title is available at a budget price you can pick up two copies of the game quite cheaply.

Gameplay wise the game runs at a smooth frame rate even when there is plenty happening on screen. The AI in the game is quite intelligent but never lets up; you can have a perfect race but if you make one mistake then you will probably end up in last place. Whilst this keeps the game challenging it can feel a little cheap at times.

So even the camera can't even up right?

Graphically MTX Mototrax looks quite impressive, with large open areas in the free ride race events and some well-detailed tracks. Some of the later tracks (such as Hawaii and even Australia) look very impressive. The animations for the riders look good and you can always see what is coming up on the track. In terms of audio there are twenty-three vocal tracks and thirteen instrumental tracks from artists such as Jet, Slipknot, Metallica and Fear, the music selected fits the game well and you can edit the play list if you’re not happy with any of the songs. The commentator in the game sounds a little over the top at times, but his dialog is kept to a minimum.

There is plenty of content in MTX Mototrax to keep you going for a long time. The career mode alone has a large amount of races but then there is also the create-a-track option as well as the multiplayer modes. There is also plenty of rider gear to unlock as well as lots of movies.

MTX Mototrax is an enjoyable racing game and comes highly recommended. We may have been waiting since June for the title to come out, but with an extensive career mode, great customisation options and a good multiplayer mode, MX fans won’t find much better than MTX Mototrax. The fact that the game is available for a budget price point is the icing on the mud cake.
The Score
MTX Mototrax is a great racing game that is hard to fault. If you're an MX fan then you won't find much better than this game. 7

I don't know if it's the same game but I have the Xbox version. It was pretty good actually, but then it did have the Excitebike 64 team behind it so it's no surprise it was great.

It's similar to the MTX Mototrax XBox game but has a few more refinements, a great game well well worth it, saw it for $34 today.
