PlayStation Portable 3.0 firmware now available

PSP News | Display PlayStation 3 content on the PSP.
The long awaited firmware update for the PlayStation Portable mustn't be far away now, as Sony has released the online manual for the firmware and it reveals a few interesting tidbits.

According to the manual you'll be able to play content that is displayed on the PlayStation 3. Whether that actually means you'll be able to play PlayStation 3 titles on the PSP in some reduced form is anybody’s guess, but you're not able to play Blu-Ray discs or DVDs, as the material is copyrighted. Other things you may send from the PlayStation 3 could include music, video or photos. You'll also be able to set your PSP to automatically connect to the internet at a certain time to download new content automatically.

Finally, Sony has also enabled the ability to choose whether a UMD starts immediately once you insert the UMD, which is a handy feature. All in all it sounds like the 3.0 firmware update will be quite feature-packed.

Update: The PSP 3.0 firmware is now downloadable automatically, it is not yet available on the official site but can be downloaded via the PSP.

There's no way PS3 only games would work on that as well, what with the lack of buttons / analog stick + bandwith required to even get it to the PSP.

Also disappointing in a sense that copyrighted material can't be sent over to the PSP.

"you're not able to play Blu-Ray discs or DVDs, as the material is copyrighted."

So, what they're saying is that those wireless AV transmitters that allow you to broadcast video signals (TV/DVD/games) to other TV's in your house are illegal?

^ Man that's an awesome AV nev! Seriously awesome!!

But yea I don't get why you can't have the video signal transmitting to your psp?! Imagine watching something...and then running downstairs to whomever and going 'hey check this out!'. Or even with that video recording stuff on the ps3. Record you doing some awesome combos on Devil May Cry 4, upload it to your psp, take it in to work and show how you're the pwnage etc.

Is it just me or do Sony nice listen to their customers? I mean booting the menu option should been included a long long time ago.

Wish they would add some real functionality.

Well these days of DMCA maybe it is - unauthorised rebroadcasting of copyrighted content would be how they would describe it. It sounds a lot like HDCP license terms:
Licensees cannot allow their devices to make copies of content, and must design their products to "effectively frustrate attempts to defeat the content protection requirements."
Going to get pretty bloody annoying all this DRM stuff, especially trying to move content between your devices.

Seriously, those features don't interest me one bit.
BUT i am looking forward to the GPS feature and ability to play PS games.

I must admit the Web browser of the PSP is very useful for me lately (iff you have wireless).
A quick email check anyone?
Viewing palgn.com.au is very cool too.
I didn't even know PALGN catering website for the PSP.

Technically yes, but no one's gonna give a rats arse about it. Just like no one cares that you record TV.

Recording TV and wireless transmitting have been determined to not be illegal.

It really sounds like Sony are doing a good job with the PSP/PS3 connectivity. Can't really say the same about Wii/DS right now, which is a huge pity since I would have liked to hook them up in some innovative ways on Dec 7.

PSOne games will be available for download on PS3 (and transferral to PSP) tomorrow, apparantly. Not much of a selection to begin with, highlights being Resident Evil DX, Jumping Flash and Tekken 2. No date for direct-to-PSP download for the rest of us though.

I'm normally not one to care about the quality of people's posts (you just have to read my own to know that) but seeing "i love sony!!!" and nothing else posted in every single thread about the PS3 is a bit much. I mean, that's an extra half a second or so of scrolling I have to do before reaching the bottom of the page.

As for the PSP firmware, cool. I'm all for the whole console to portable connectivity on all fronts, it's a great addition to the gaming World (it's a shame our introduction to the idea had to be so horrendously applied, oh well Nintendo have learned and other companies are building on a great idea so it's a win for everyone).

I'm currently on 2.81, should I update to 3?

I'm guessing I won't be able to get Homebrew anyway.

S/He/It's only coming here for attention and probably some humor, yeah he's a waste of space and there is no point to his posts. But it doesnt really bother me, cause no one really takes him seriously anyway.

It's not so much that he does it that I have issue with it's that, at least not publicly, he hasn't been pulled up on it. Then again if it was actually bugging me enough I would PM someone as opposed to spamming a topic. Yay, I'm a hypocrite.

We can assume that FW 3.0 won't allow Homebrew, at least until someone devises a homebrew ap that works under 3.0

Yer im sorry Peeps. I see your point. It is spamming. Sorry.

Some Dutch dude found it, and some dude from Sony has said that 3.01 will be released tomorrow.

Its rumor currently, there's no actual proof of the glitch just some flying dutchman on a forum. 2.80 currently has flash0 access, so I assume a downgrader is coming.
