E3 2006: Konami announce handheld Silent Hill

PSP News | Silent Hill prequel to tell the unknown stories of the mysterious town.
During the company’s Pre-E3 conference, Konami announced the development of Silent Hill Origins, the first portable title for the series that unveils the secrets behind the mysterious Silent Hill city.

Silent Hill Origins revolves around a truck driver named Travis O’Grady who’s in the middle of a routine delivery, but soon finds himself lost in Silent Hill. Travis isn’t our typical camper either, in fact, he has a troubled past, and as we discover throughout the game, he must confront his hallucinations as well as the horrors that inhabit Silent Hill. Konami also mentioned that gamers would run into characters from later games.

In addition, the company revealed a new gameplay feature called the Barricade System, which allows gamers to create obstacles by pushing surrounding furniture and manipulating the environment to impede creature’s movement. In addition, the game has opted a new control and combat scheme, as well as a new fitting camera system to suit the PSP perfectly.

Silent Hill Origins is slated for a 2007 release.

It's only for the PSP? That's a bit of a rip off for all the Nintendo DS uses.

The last two Silent Hill games sucked, as did the movie. At least this sin't the rumored re-make of the first (and by far, far, far the best IMO) game.

I'll agree that Silent Hill 4 was a letdown, but Silent Hill 3 wasn't.

Silent Hill 3 was great until the final cutscene, that just really ruined the game for me, everything up to that was great. Plus the fact that it followed the storyline of the first game helped, whereas SH2 kinda deviated from the path, nor did it really progress the story. Then again, the concept behind Silent Hill lends itself to completely unrelated encounters of this mysterious town.

Mind you, I STILL haven't played the first game, I have never had an opportunity to (if anyone wants to lend me a Playstation and the game I'll happily play it).

Um, I'm pretty sure it is. Konami never mentioned they were re-releasing the original, it got caught up in a leaked list of news calling the game Silent Hill Original Sin. This being a prequel does piece together the name from the leaked list of Konami titles.

There's a trailer floating around, and it does look pretty good. I don't know how well the Silent Hill creepy feeling of the series will reflect on the PSP though.

I dunno, people can be scared of the smallest spiders, so why not a 1 inch high... something.
