PSP Katamari to be last ever, says producer

PSP News | "This is where we wrap it up."
All good things must come to an end and, sure enough, it looks like we may have seen the last ever Katamari Damacy game, after the producer of upcoming PSP title Me & My Katamari announced to 1Up that no more Katamari games would be appearing in the future.

Although the two first games in the series (Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari) hardly set the sales charts alight, it's not the commercial failings of the critically acclaimed titles that has put the series' creators off further titles. As Namco's Toshiya Hara, producer of Me & My Katamari, told 1Up: "The core concept of the Katamari series was complete from the first game, and we cannot really improve on this. The PSP version was made basically so that the game could be carried around and played on-the-go. So for now, this is where we wrap it up."

A genuine shame for sure, as the Katamari games are true critical darlings, and deservedly so. If you haven't played either of the first two games yet (both on PlayStation 2), we'd strongly advise you locate a copy - they're great fun. And don't forget that Me & My Katamari will be appearing on the PSP throughout Europe and Australia later this year.

a shame, but i don't see this as the type of game that would survive many iterations.

you roll up a cow once, you've done it for all time.

I don't see why not having any more Katamari games would be an issue. Sequels don't always need to be made, it's just now so common in the industry, we think of it as an inevitablity. It's not. I don't care that there aren't going to be any more Katamari games. I can have fun with Katamari Damacy as often as I want, I don't need a sequel to give me that. What I'm really looking forward to is what the Katamari team come up with next. Something new and original. Something that sequels rarely deliver.

Wasn't the inherent point of Katamari to create something completely different and original? Doesn't creating endless sequels defeat this purpose?

No big surprise.

An that's exactly what the developer said after the original, they basically forced him to make the sequel, and the PSP version was done by someone else. I liked the sequel because the original was a bit low on content and the story was funny, but it wasn't anything new.

Eh, it's nice to see a developer making a decision like this. We have 3 brilliant Katamari games to choose from so really we don't need anymore. Better to have this series go down as something we love rather than something we grew to hate because of continuity.

Let us all just say that We Love Katamari and leave it at that. icon_smile.gif

I'm actually glad to hear that PSP version is the last one. Come on guys, we need games to end while it is still good.. so that we can go back and play it over and over again...

Don't let the history of Lara Croft, Dynasty Warrior repeat itself.
